It’s okay to like being trans. Heck, it’s good to enjoy and take pride in being trans.

The GENDER Book second edition is in the works… and we need your help to make it happen!

Hi friends! With COVID-19 turning the world upside down, our illustrator has less work on his plate. The upside is that means more time to (finally!) go back and do some revisions on the GENDER book.

We’re looking to fix all those typos that have been bugging you, add more identities, and generally make the book the best it can be. After all, the world of gender has evolved some since the first edition came out in 2014!

So, if you’re willing, we’d love your sharp eyes and keen minds to help out with the editing process. Just bust out your copy (or grab a pay what you like ebook) and fill out this formwith anything you’d change. This is your chance to be heard! There’s even a spot if you want to be drawn into the next version of the GENDER book.

ONWARDS TO THE SURVEY!

Thanks for being awesome,
Hunter, Jay, and Robin

Oh oh ohhh this is so not cool. I can’t believe they’re going there. A jaw droppingly LGBTQ hate and racist kind of not cool.

Florida governor DeSantis is directly targeting Disney World for being conspicuously LGBTQ equality supportive, and throwing the weight of his office to take them down for it… and more than that, if you read his written statement to his supporters, it’s racist too.

YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON IN FLORIDA… read it here:

The “Don’t Say Gay” laws that DeSantis is fighting dirty for are laws aimed at making it illegal to even mention the existence of LGBTQ people in schools, including giving guidance, protection from bullying, and emotional support to LGBTQ children, and erasing all LGBTQ history from being taught or discussed in schools. Beyond safe sex and inclusiveness- Pride and Stonewall civil rights history? It would be illegal to discuss. The very local Pulse massacre? Illegal history too. “Help- I’m gay and my dad is beating me…” pleas from children to teachers or guidance counselors? Illegal too.

What does the asterisk in “trans*” stand for?

Trans* is an umbrella term that refers to all of the identities within the gender identity spectrum.  There’s a ton of diversity there, but we often group them all together (e.g., when we say “trans* issues).  Trans (without the asterisk) is best applied to trans men and trans women, while the asterisk makes special note in an effort to include all non-cisgender gender identities, including transgender, transsexual, transvestite, genderqueer, genderfluid, non-binary, genderfuck, genderless, agender, non-gendered, third gender, two-spirit, bigender, and trans man and trans woman.

There Are No Closets In Tipis

… and no pipelines, police, prisons, and weapons manufacturers in a Two Spirit LGBTQIA paradise.~Jen Deerinwater, a  DC-based bisexual+, two-spirit, disabled, journalist,  activist, and member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma.  They were among those who protested the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL)atStanding Rock in 2016.

Deerinwater pointed to Capital PridesponsorWells Fargo’s involvement in the Dakota Access Pipeline, which spawned protests from the Standing Rock Sioux and allies, as one reason for concern, ‘Wells Fargo is one of the primary financial backers of the Dakota Access Pipeline,” she said. “As an indigenous person and as a queer person, I cannot understand why Capital Pride would work with an organization that is actively causing harm to our community members.”    ~Indigenous Resistance: Crushing Colonialism

Our ancestors saw humans not as completely feminine or masculine beings, but as a combination of both qualities.

Every person has a side that is spiritually wet, cold, fertile and dark, and another dry, hot, sterile and luminous side. One of the names of this painting, Cihuaoquichtli, means Man-Woman. This is why it is called Man-Woman Duality as well. It also shows the position of the days of the Sacred Calendar in the human body.

This painting, along with Life-Death Duality, will be on display at my show at Art Bug Gallery! The opening is on Saturday!

My painting Xochihua or Owner of Flowers is part of a series that explores queer identities in Mesoamerica.

Sources are scarce and contradictory, and little information can be obtained about sex and gender diversity in ancient times. However, there are few cases of what we would call today “queer” identities were registered in colonial manuscripts.

A xochihua or owner of flowers is similar to a modern queer man and this word usually describes gay men.

You can find this painting as a print in my Etsy store! Click here!

The use of the word “queer” is not completely accurate to talk about the sexual preferences and gender identities of Mesoamerica. However, it is important to remember that a lot of what today we call “queer” was present in the societies of the past

The New Sex Science Changes Everything

Up until now, reproductive science has been steered by a male-dominant perspective, which explains why the narrative of reproduction has historically adopted patriarchal terms. But now this new science “undercuts the dominant, founding myths of Western culture — that men are active and women are passive, that men seek and find and women wait and choose. There is an interaction between the two.”

Yessss!  Feminism and health sciences!

Two-Spirit (via Wikipedia)

Two-Spirit People (also Two Spirit or Twospirit) is an umbrella term sometimes used for what was once commonly known as berdaches, Indigenous North Americans who fulfill one of many mixed gender roles found traditionally among many Native Americans and Canadian First Nations communities.

Third gender roles historically embodied by Two-Spirit people include performing work and wearing clothing associated with both men and women. The presence of male two-spirits “was a fundamental institution among most tribal peoples.”Male and female two-spirits have been “documented in over 130 tribes, in every region of North America.

These individuals were sometimes viewed in certain tribes as having two spirits occupying one body. Their dress is usually a mixture of traditionally male and traditionally female articles.

Two-spirit people, specifically male-bodied (biologically male, gender female), could go to war and have access to male activities such as sweat lodges. However, they also took on female roles such as cooking and other domestic responsibilities. Today’s societal standards look down upon feminine males, and this perception of that identity has trickled into Native society.

Two-spirits might have relationships with people of either sex. Female-bodied two-spirits usually had sexual relations or marriages with only females. In the Lakota tribe, two-spirits commonly married widowers; a male-bodied two-spirit could perform the function of parenting the children of her husband’s late wife without any risk of bearing new children to whom she might give priority.
