LIVE

Hi all! I recently launched the fundraiser for my second short film, May Be Unholy.

This dramedy is about an atheist who’s briefly convinced that witches (and divinity) are real, all because of a prank gone wrong.

I’m making May Be Unholy for many reasons. I’m largely inspired by my own relationship with divinity and how that has changed throughout my life, having been raised quite religious and then learning to redefine that relationship as I got older. Two, I absolutely love witch lore and am inspired to learn more about it, especially the historical and psychological parallels of “witch hysteria.” Three, I just want to see more films where women and non-binary folks can be chaotic and fun and imperfect. I feel strongly about comedy and spectacle being a universal experience for everyone.

I would be eternally grateful if you would be willing to donate to this project (we’ve got some cute merch as perks!) The fundraiser can be found on our Indiegogo page, where we describe the story in depth, as well as our production plans. Feel free to follow us on Instagram @maybeunholy. Please share with friends, family, and loved ones! Thank you so much!! <3 <3

“The 50 Yard Dash” (2015)

This quirky and silly mockumentary, starring two-time Silver Fox Award winner Kaitlyn Murphy, follows a day in the lives of twenty-something undergraduates. With graduation quickly approaching, college roommates and best friends Lauren and Allie must come to terms with their post-grad lives going in opposite directions. Directed by Rachael Black and Devin Barbaro, this short film explores the pressure and emotions of four years of college coming to a close, reminding us that the most important thing we’ll take away from our higher education is the memories we’ve made.

Some progress of my film!

A bit different to my usual stuff but I’m modeling my witch in 3D! I have just finished the body model (modeling the hands killed me) and now I’m going to rework the hair :D

Here’s some of the concept art for my second year film! I also post more updates on twitter!

Okay. This is like. A very niche and particular rant. I’d put it under a cut but I’m on mobile and stupid so just pretend.

I remember circa late 2010s I would see people talk about like Marvel movies and blame the directors for decisions they didn’t agree with. And now I’m seeing people complain about Bridgerton and put all the blame on the showrunner and the writers’ room.

And in both cases like, yes, you are right. Dumb writers are dumb. Dumb directors are dumb. But film and television are massively collaborative things. The script itself is not even half, I’d say, of what actually makes it to our screens.

For TV, you have anywhere from 1 to probably 5+ writers involved in every single script, from plotting to editing. You have directors that usually vary by the episode, who set the tone for what actually *happens* to those words. You have designers who, while usually more consistent across a production process, are trying to sell multiple visions in costumes and lighting and set that can all align with those words and maybe be (passingly) historically accurate. You have cinematographers deciding what our focus is going to be while those words are said. You have actors deciding how their character would believably say those words under this director’s vision. You have choreographers, stunt coordinators, and intimacy coordinators bringing the subtext to life through movement, action, and touch while also protecting the actors’ physical and emotional safety. You have editors deciding which shots get used in order to tell the director’s story. And while all this is going on, you have producers who want to see profit and will tweak things when and where they can.

So, yes, do writers fuck up? Do actors, editors, networks/streaming services? All the time. But most of the time, it is not just one person’s “fault.” For better or for worse, it takes a village. And that’s worth remembering when condemning AND celebrating the hard work of those putting together these shows for us.
