Demon Kitten, pencil and colored pencil.

It had been a while since I’d done anything in colored pencil, but I ended up adding to a pencil doodle to make a Drawtober piece for the prompt “folklore.”

Recently I was reading some ghost-related folklore and learned about Gabriel Ratchets, which surprisingly is neither a character in a Dickens novel nor your 23-year-old cousin who wants to be a rap star. They are the spectral hounds said to run with Herne the Hunter, a ghostly being that roams at night in some parts of the UK. Their ears are red to symbolize death. Anyhow, my Gabriel Ratchets are sweet lil puppers. Happy Wednesday!

ORIGIN OF FIRE

Ukko of the air struck fire,
produced a sudden flash
with three feathers of Kokko,
the eagle of fire,
in the sky above,
behind the enclosure of stars.

My contribution for an exhibition on Finno-Karelian mythspace, centered around an animated short by Katrin Lebedev.

Westerners will really steal foreign folklore, put in a bunch of xenophobia then act as experts on it and claim it’s Problematic now.

My sasquatch book The Beast of Wolfe’s Baygot reviewed at Shelf Abuse this month, and they said the best thing I could have hoped for regarding my female lead, Dr. Winifred Roth: “Winifred Roth is the sort of female character we don’t see enough of in horror or fantasy comics; sensibly proportioned and by no means a mere romantic interest or manic pixie dream girl.”

The rest of the review is good, too, but it makes it seem like the book has no sasquatch in it. It does. 100% sasquatch guaranteed!
You can buyThe Beast of Wolfe’s Bay at Amazon.

they-hide-in-the-dark:

Yamachichi -

A monkey-like creature from Japanese folklore, Yamachichi are believed to come from bats. It is said that when a bat lives a very long life that it can transform into a Yamachichi. These creatures resemble monkeys but they have pointed mouths and lips constantly poised for sucking. They usually live deep in the mountains but they will come down at night to visit houses.

Yamachichi live on human life force. They will sneak into a person’s house when they are sleeping and steal the breath from their bodies while they sleep by sucking it out of their mouths. After sucking away all of its victim’s breath, the Yamachichi  will tap on its victim’s chest before fleeing. A human who has had their breath stolen by a Yamachichi  in this way will die the next day.

If a Yamachichi is caught in the act of breath stealing, either by the victim or by someone else, it will run away. This will actually greatly increase their victim’s lifespan instead if killing them.

The Bulbeggar

A farmer coming home late one night by way of Creech Hill saw a figure lying in the road and went to its help. But as he reached it, it shot up to more than human height and chased him all the way home. His family ran out to help him and saw it bounding off up the hill, shrieking with laughter.
It was a “bulbeggar,” a word for a bogey that goes back to the sixteenth century. This account, however, was collected in 1906, and the attachment of bulbeggars to Creech Hill itself only came about in the 1880s when two bodies, supposedly that of a Saxon and Norman, were dug up in a nearby quarry. Afterward the hill became haunted by a “black uncanny shape” that would stalk behind travelers, and the persistent sound of unseen footsteps.

I LOVE Tiffany’s folklore art. It’s so perfect.
