White Cloud Peaks Loop | 8/23/20 | 2.4 Miles | Day 1
I left Portland fairly early Sunday morning, only stopping for gas and a few short breaks until I got to Stanley Idaho, where I got some dinner and then drove off to the trailhead at 4th of July Lake. Arriving at 7:30, I made sure I had everything for the next two days of hiking and set off, reaching an unnamed lake after a quick 2.4 miles.
Setting up camp, I prepared for the next day, where I would start the off trail section of this loop first thing the next morning.

Timberline Trail | 8/18/20 | 24 Miles | Day 2
Waking up at 6, I packed up camp and began the climb out of Elk Cove. I thought this day was going to be a little easier than it turned out to be.
As the morning continued to warm up, I made the miles in the morning fairly easily, but by the afternoon, it turned quite hot.
I was glad to be able to get out on the Timberline Trail this Summer, it’s a hike I’ve enjoyed doing every year for the past couple of years. Now I’m preparing for a ten day trip into Idaho, I’ll be leaving on Sunday.

Timberline Trail | 8/17/20 | 21 Miles | Day 1
This was the third time I’ve hiked the Timberline Trail and I decided to go counterclockwise, which was a nice change from the other two times.
I started hiking around 9:00 on Monday and the miles started out fairly easy, with some great views, a new friend, and some big climbs. This was my favorite time around this mountain so far.

McNeil Point | 7/26/20 | 9.5 Miles
On Sunday, a coworker, Angel and I, went on sunrise summit hike of McNeil Point on Mt. Hood. We reached the trailhead at eleven and made the short hike up to the top around 1am, where we cowboy camped underneath a starry sky.
Waking up at five, we caught sunrise where we were greeted by a hazy sky.
This was Angel’s first overnight trip and I’m glad he suggested a sunrise hike.

Loowit Trail | Day 2 | 7/21/20 | 10 Miles
The second day on trail started early after a night of cowboy camping under the stars. This was the first night of the year that I hadn’t set up my shelter and it was amazing. The stars were out and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky.
It started to get quite warm early on, so I’m glad that I started the hike early as I climbed around the mountain above tree line.
I’m looking forward to doing this trail again soon, I’ll probably head back out there in the fall.

Loowit Trail | Day 1 | 7/20/20 | 20 Miles
I was excited to get out on the Loowit Trail after hearing about it earlier in the Spring. I love the Timberline Trail and the Wonderland Trail, so being able to circumnavigate Mt. St. Helens was really exciting.
The trail leads you across all different types of terrain. I hiked through forests, giant boulder fields, alpine, sandy mountainside above all vegetation, silty rivers, and lava fields. The trail was hot and exposed and water was scarce but the views were spectacular.
Unfortunately, I forgot my camera’s memory card, which I realized about a mile and a half into the hike. So not wanting to turn around, I carried the camera the whole way and had to rely on my phone for pictures.

Marion Lakes/Mt. Jefferson Wilderness | Day 2 | 18 miles | 6/23/20

After a restless sleep at Wasco Lake, I made the short hike back up to the PCT and started heading north. I had a few miles to hike on the PCT on this loop. After climbing through a burned area, the trail remained covered in snow for about two miles around Rockpile Lake until South Cinder Peak, where I turned off the PCT and headed back down to Marion Lake.
This overnight trip was probably the hardest overnight hike I had done until this point, between the climbing over downed logs for ten miles, two miles of snow, dealing with heat exhaustion and mosquitoes, and acclimating to a higher elevation. Getting back into the routine of hiking has been tough and I definitely need to work on my pacing. But all in all, I’m glad I did this route, as it challenged me and I felt very accomplished afterwards.

This trip felt more like a backpacking trip than lasts week trip did. I had hiked a loop similar to this one last year, and as I set out for the overnight trip, I knew it was going to be a hard hike but it ended up being a little more difficult than I expected. I guess I still need to get my trail legs back.
The hike started out in wandering through the forest, with a pleasantly warm morning. As I continued on, the day began to heat up and the trail entered, exited, and re-entered several burn areas, where I was forced to climb over a ton of downed trees. Eventually, I made my way up to the PCT and camped at Wasco Lake, where the mosquitoes would continue to eat me alive.

Deschutes River Canyon | Day 2 | 6/16/20 | 16 Miles

Packing up camp, I set off around 7:30. The sun was out today and the morning started out fairly warm. A couple of hours into the hike, I came across a rattlesnake waking up and sunning itself, it didn’t rattle at me and was fairly docile. The rest of the morning was fairly uneventful, and the miles cruised by. With my first trip of the summer complete, I’m ready for the next one.

My first backpacking trip was along the Deschutes River. It had been far too long since I had been able to get out for a night and I was so glad to finally be able to get out. The Deschutes River has started my backpacking season both this year and last, it’s a fairly easy hike and a nice way to start getting back into the motions.
