Fourth year at Hogwarts and of course Malfoy stood right there on the train as we shipped off. I didn’t say anything as he and Ron and Harry got into it again, though I wanted to. It had been four years and the only person that Malfoy hated as much as Potter, happened to be me.

Our families had been rivals for… centuries. In a desperate attempt to break the cycle, my parents moved to America, with me. I had no contact with Malfoy or his family… until I got my letter to Hogwarts. Then the time came to go back and be who I was meant to be.

When first year came, there was a blond-haired stood beside me in line alphabetically, and though he didn’t talk to me, and scared off other students, I did manage to get a smile from him. I knew his nerves matched mine. We had reputations to live up to. It gave me hope that I wasn’t alone.

Then I found out he was a Malfoy.

And I was a Lupine.

Slytherin and Gryffindor.

I guess it started then. Every class we had together we had avoided each other. Shunned each other. I refused to rise to his bait, and I suppose he grew bored. We hated each other in silent. Unlike Harry, Ron, and Hermione—who I was quite close to, but not completely taken with—I sighed and shook my head.

That was, until third year and the entire Buckbeak incident happened. Then I wasn’t quiet anymore. I was almost worse than Harry about making snide comments to the ‘Slytherin Prince.’ I hated injustice and I was tired of being quiet about it. And Harry wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, and Hermione wasn’t the most vocal… I on the other hand was both, and it infuriated Malfoy to no end. Because there was one thing that I had on him:

I was a pure blood. And he couldn’t do anything about that.

Our rivalry grew. Every day it was something different. Every class we had together we challenged the other. I won most, but the few he did win he wouldn’t let me live down. Our duels left him angry and brooding and me grinning and smiling all day.

Maybe I could see why our two families didn’t get along. He was too easy. It was almost fun. It also helped me in my classes—to beat Malfoy at his game I had to be smarter than him.

The Fourth Year

“You’re a pathetic excuse for a pure blood,” He sneered as I got off of the train.

I snorted a laugh and rolled my eyes, Harry and the other two had gone on ahead, leaving me with Malfoy and his two goons.

“Careful Malfoy, I don’t think I’m a mirror,” I quipped, a wicked grin on my face.

I could see him grow red as he looked for a comeback. I simply walked off.

“You won’t win! No matter what you do!” He shouted.

“I don’t have to win!” I turned around, still making my way towards the school. “I just have to beat you!” A smile stayed on my face for the rest of the night.

I watched as Harry turned away and Malfoy rose to cast a spell against him. I drew my own wand to counter him, but there was no one to cast a spell on but a small silvery ferret, where Malfoy was standing.

I stared at the small thing, a smile growing on my face. This was almost too easy.

Moody came then, started scolding the little ferret Malfoy, holding him by his tail and I itched to tell Moody that’s not how you’re supposed to handle any kind of animal—even if it was Malfoy—but McGonagall beat me to it.

Something, that was beyond any rivalry, gripped my heart when I saw Malfoy, now human again, curled up on the floor in pain and fear. I was about to reach my hand out to help him up, but Hermione gave me a nudge. A reminder.

“Don’t talk to me,” Ron said quietly as we sat at the Gryffindor table in the Great Hall.

I was almost to lost in thought to notice that he had said anything.

“Why not?” said Hermione in surprise, drawing me from my thoughts.

“Because I want to fix that in my memory forever,” said Ron, his eyes closed and an uplifted expression on his face. “Draco Malfoy, the amazing bouncing ferret …”

Harry and Hermione both laughed, and a smile touched my lips as I ate quietly. I didn’t quite agree, and I didn’t know what was wrong with me. I should be laughing at his misfortune. It was almost too easy. The entire situation was a gift from my ancestors, and yet something was… off.

“He could have really hurt Malfoy, though,” Hermione said. “It was good, really, that Professor McGonagall stopped it —”

Maybe that was the problem. Maybe I didn’t like the idea that he had gotten hurt… or could have gotten hurt worse than he already was. But why did I care again? We were enemies. That was that. And yet…

I tuned out Ron yelling at Hermione at her comment.

“Hermione’s is right guys, it could have hurt him,” I muttered.

I looked up from my plate and Ron and Harry were staring at me like I had three heads. Hermione was indifferent, the look on her face like she knew something.

“Any why do youcare? You hate him more than the rest of us.” Harry pointed out.

“I compete with him yes, and he’s a pain, yes, and I wish I never had to see him again… but he doesn’t deserve to…” I trailed off knowing I was fighting a losing battle.

“I’m off to the library,” Hermione stood, pushing her plate away.

“I’m gonna go too,” I stood, pushing away my half-eaten plate.

“But why? You don’t have homework!” Ron complained.

“I’m not doing schoolwork,” Hermione said in passing as we left.

As we walked down the hall Hermione didn’t stop looking at me. I sighed and kept to my own thoughts, trying to unravel the dilemma that the situation presented.

“Youlike him,” she nudged me.

“What?No! I don’t!” I deflected. “Me!? Like a Malfoy!?

She laughed.

“It’s okay, I won’t tell the boys. But if you want to check on him, he’s probably in the infirmary complaining.”

Why would I—”

“You really think I believe you want to go to the library?” She raised an eyebrow. “You hate the library. You study in your room at all costs,”

That was true, I preferred my own space and to study in the comfort of my own bed and room. It was hard enough focusing, let alone focusing on things in a place I wasn’t comfortable in.

“I just… I don’t know Hermione… seeing him like that.No one deserves that. I know Malfoy is… Malfoy… but injustice is still injustice?” I offered. It was some sort of explanation.

Go,” She ordered. “I’ll see you later.”

I debated a moment more then decided.

“Thanks, Hermione. I owe you one,”

“Just go!” She shoved me off and I changed directions heading towards the infirmary.

Thinking that this was the stupidest thing I ever had done, I, for once, shoved every preconceived notion about Malfoy that I had and went to go and see if he was… okay.

Ugh.

I could hear him complaining as I entered the hallway that held the infirmary. A smile touched my lips as I neared the door. Some things would never change.

“Can I help you, dearie?” Madam Pomfrey asked.

“Here as a visitor,” I smiled sweetly.

“For who? Mr. Malfoy?” She raised an eyebrow at me. She had seen both of us in here as a result of our little rivalry.

“Against my better judgement, yes.” I sighed.

She let me in and immediately his eyes snapped to mine. His eyes were puffy and red, like he had been crying. He looked pitiful. I wanted to laugh, but I didn’t have it in me.

“What are you doing here? Come to make fun of me?” He snapped, crossing his arms.

“Where’s your posse?” I asked, folding my arms as well, cocking my head back. “I thought sure they would be with you.”

“Am I their keeper?”

“Ithought so.” I smirked.

“Whatever, Lupine,” he rolled his eyes.

We remained quiet around another as time stretched out. There were so many things that I wanted to say but didn’t. I wanted to ask if he was okay, if he needed anything, if he was still hurting. But I also wanted to laugh and make fun of him. I wanted to put him down and never let him live this down. I wanted to write a letter to my parents so that they knew…

And I did none of that.

“You make a cute ferret,” I noted and turned to leave, wondering why I went in the first place.

Petrichor- Ignis Aurum Probat || Hermione x Slytherin! Fem! Reader.

Warning: Implied Abuse , bruises.

Remember that this series deals with dark themes.

***

Time was a very weird concept. How it could feel fast yet very slow was something beyond Y/n’s comprehension. Though every time she felt like analyzing it, the thoughts would drift away to a time that she’d rather not live again.

She looked out the window at the countryside they were currently passing through as Eira calmly purred on her lap. It was nearing sunset so the sky was a beautiful shade of yellow and purple with clouds scattered all over. The light green meadows and dark green hills made her sigh in content, wondering if a bushy-haired Gryffindor was also enjoying this serenity or had her nose buried in some book she smuggled from the restricted section.

Draco looked at her with furrowed brows to which she just rolled her eyes and waved him off. He rolled his eyes back at her in reply and went about talking some shit that she didn’t have the energy to pay attention to. She knew it wasn’t any good anyway.

She closed her eyes and rested her head against the window briefly.

It was thunderstorming. Y/n could hear her heart pounding in her ears. She knew what awaited her once she reached her destination and she did not have much time to stall, like she was doing at the moment.

A faint sound made her look towards the hall’s entrance with baited breath. She clutched the floo powder tightly before loosening her grip when no movement could be detected towards where she stood.

This was exactly why she could not stall anymore.

Grabbing a handful of powder she took a deep breath and stepped inside the fireplace.

“12 Grimmauld Place”

Her voice was all but a whisper. Letting out the shaky breath she was holding in, she let the floo powder fall.

She had cast the muffliato spell in the hall as soon as she had entered and could only hope that no one in the house took notice of her absence. And hopefully she’d be back by noon so that she could be excused as having gone for a walk in the woods.

Floo travel wasn’t her go-to travel method, she’d much rather fly on a broom. But alas, she couldn’t have muggles spotting her and it would be quite a long journey. Not to mention, the utmost secrecy of what she was doing from everyone around her.

It just took a second, but the second was a whirlwind before she landed in the dusty fireplace of the old manor. A coughing fit caught hold of her, courtesy to not having travelled through floo much and also the extra layer of dust that always seems to plague this place.

By the time she had opened her eyes, quite an audience had assembled to see who had tumbled through the old fireplace in the wee hours before the crack of dawn.

And before she could even find words to utter, she had several wands to her throat.

“Who are you?” Tonks asked, making sure to stare the intruder down.

Once the facade of her calmness came back to her, she answered in a polite manner but her voice still held a bite,” Greetings to you too, cousin.”

Nymphadora only narrowed her eyes even more before someone pushed her aside. Quite a tired-looking Sirius Black came within her vision, limping a little due to the new metal leg he had procured from the fight in the ministry not that long ago.

Y/n lifted her eyes quick enough before it could be considered “rude” to stare at his injury,” Greetings to you as well, uncle.”

He just stared at her for a couple more seconds before nodding his in acknowledgement.

“Sirius, who is this intruder?” Arthur Weasley asked, eyes flickering back and forth between the two of them.

Sirius sighed, glancing at the girl once more in case she wanted to be the one who answered but her silence was enough to convey the message,” This is Y/n Y/l/n. A distant cousin’s daughter.”

“How am I related to you?” Tonks questioned, finally lowering her wand but still keeping it ready,” I’d like to know in detail.”

“Yes, Y/n , tell us.” George chimed in,” Details are very important of course” and Fred finished.

Y/n hadn’t interacted with the twins directly but their friendly teasing tone to a stranger unnerved her. However, she ignored that and answered,” Do you know someone named Nagai Y/l/n? Your mom and her were quite close as far as I recollect, along with aunt Cissy.”

A look of recognition falls upon Tonks,” Yes, she’s a name I’ve heard a couple times in my life.”

“Splendid. I’m her daughter.” Y/n did not bat an eye to the gawking expression a few were giving her in the room, simply turning her attention to Sirius Black.

She noticed Lupin standing at the back of the room was analyzing her. She expected that much and didn’t let it bother her much.

“She’s also the Slytherin Prefect by the way” a voice called out, turning out to be the redhead’s she has grown to know quite well, even if it wasn’t through direct interactions.

“You still hold that against me, I see.” Y/n rolled her eyes in annoyance.

“Why, of course, it is. It’s vital information if you ask me. Gives a lot more perspective to your…” he paused, a look of disgust taking over,” upbringing, to put it lightly.”

Y/n just narrowed her eyes at the boy before her attention was diverted by Arthur speaking,” Uhm, Ms. Y/l/n. You still haven’t stated your purpose for a visit this late into the night”

“Yes, dear. What are you doing here? And Sirius, why are you so quiet?” Molly asked, finally breaking her silence.

Molly was on guard with having someone from Black’s side of the family standing in the room, but she couldn’t ignore that this was a child as well.

“Would you like to state your purpose for the visit in front of everyone?” Sirius asked, turning to you.

You nodded,” I want to join the order.”

It was dead silent in the room. Y/n trained herself to look everyone in the eye, just like she had been taught to since she was a child.

“And why do you want that?” Lupin asked, slowly walking towards where the slytherin was standing, still covered in soot right outside the fireplace.

“Because I want to defeat Voldemort.”

Lupin’s and frankly every adult’s surprise at Dark Lord’s name spoken without hesitation was evident.

Lupin cleared his throat before continuing,“And what about your family?”

“They know nothing of this. And I am going to keep it that way until I finally cannot.”

There was a fire in Y/n’s eyes that Lupin could not ignore. He glanced at Tonks who looked like she was waiting for him to finish his bit before she could jump in.

And once he relaxed his stance a bit, she took over,” And what use would you propose you have to us?”

“That’s a bit crass” Molly muttered which Y/n caught and fought against a smirk.

Y/n raised her eyebrow, surprised by the subtle hostility but secretly also liking this discussion,” I’ll be the mole you will need to help you stay on the same step or even a step ahead of the Dark Lord. Even if it doesn’t let you stay on the same step as him, it can never hurt to have someone on the inside.”

Tonks bit her lip, knowing that Y/n made a good point which was hard to refute.

“And how do we know you can be trusted?” she finally asked after the moment of silence had passed.

But this time Y/n turned to Black, letting him answer it instead, which he caught on to,” She has agreed to be questioned under the influence of the truth serum. Which is what we should be getting on to, without further delay as I understand you can’t be away for long”

“Wait, you didn’t mention that!” a voice exclaimed in surprise from the back of the room. And that was when Y/n finally laid eyes upon the Gryffindor who she’d been dreaming of finally reuniting with.

Everyone turned to the bushy haired brunette in surprise when Molly asked,” You know her?”

Hermione looked Y/n dead in the eye as she answered,” She’s my girlfriend Mrs.Weasley.”

“What?” Everyone except Ron and Y/n let out.

“You know, I was expecting this to happen sooner. Shouldn’t you have been the one to introduce me” Y/n asked, folding her arms across her chest as she narrowed her eyes at the Gryffindor.

Hermione just shrugged,” I wanted you to handle them on your own. Now, what is this about a truth serum?”

The Slytherin reached inside her coat and produced a small vial of what looked like Veritaserum. She walked to Sirius and handed it to him.

“What? But why are you guys doing this? Can’t just questioning her regularly be enough?” Hermione asked, not quite happy with the way they were being sceptical about her girlfriend, her rational mind unusually being overpowered by her emotional one.

“Hermione, this is-” Lupin started before getting cut off by the Slytherin herself.

“Did you trust me the very first time you met me as someone from Slytherin or someone who was related to the Malfoys, Granger?” She asked, raising her eyebrow and nodding when she was met with silence,” Exactly.”

“Where did you get the serum?” Sirius asked, eyeing the vial carefully.

“Father has a cabinet filled with potions for different purposes. I knew where he kept the veritaserum and sneaked in a vial.”

“And what’s the proof it’s real?” Ron asked, though this time his voice wasn’t malicious. Y/n still glared,” Do you hold some sort of a grudge against me, Weasley?”

“No! That was a genuine question!” Ron exclaimed, having not meant to be offensive, no matter how sceptical he was.

Y/n just hummed before answering,” Fair enough. Uncle Sirius, is there any house-elf around here?”

He nodded before calling for Kreature who arrived immediately.

“Kreature, see if this is veritaserum or not.”

The elf took the vial in his hand and examined it thoroughly, twirling it in the air a little and performing a few more tests that only he understood before handing the vial back to Sirius.

“It is real, Master, Kreature is sure”

Y/n looked at the crowd in expectation,” So shall we get started?”

But right before they were all going to leave the living room and head to the conference room, a voice wandered in.

“Is that little mistress Dobby hears?”

Y/n froze in her steps, not believing the voice she heard before turning towards the room’s entrance.

And when the little head with huge eyes found her, she almost couldn’t control her tears.

Almost.

Instead, she took a deep breath,” Hello Dobby.” She gave a small smile.

The huge giddy smile that Dobby gave her back made her want to sprint to him and crush him in a bear hug. But she couldn’t. She had a reputation to uphold.

She can’t be vulnerable.

“Little mistress is here…” he happily sighed, clasping his hands together in joy.

Merlin, was she glad that Dobby hadn’t run up to her and given her a hug either, she knew she wouldn’t have been able to refuse him.

“Has Dobby been sneaking some cupcakes?” The Slytherin asked, confusing everyone present around her. But Dobby understood.

“No, little mistress. They give Dobby cupcakes here.” The little elf answered. It was a sentence both of them did not think they’d ever hear but they were glad to have been proven wrong.

“That is lovely, Dobby.” Y/n nodded before looking at the adults again, indicating on continuing where they left.

“I gather you know Dobby already” Tonks commented, looking at the two of you for a moment before heading towards the conference room.

Hermione fell in step with the (Y/h/c) girl as they left,” What was that?”

Y/n just shrugged before going to the conference room. Just as Hermione was about to enter, Lupin stopped her at the door,” I think it would be better if you waited out here.”

“W-What?” Hermione stuttered, taken aback.

Lupin looked inside the room before looking back at the brunette,” No children inside, Ms.Granger. Your girlfriend would be fine.” He then turned to the Slytherin,” Ms. Y/l/n, if you would please.”

Y/n nodded and went straight ahead, without sparing a glance towards the grumpy gryffindor.

The interrogation did not take a long while. The adults in the Order questioned the Slytherin, at some point even brutally but knowing that her answers were honest and she genuinely wanted to help defeat the evil her family worshipped, they knew she was a good one.

But being the playful bastard that Sirius was, he didn’t want her to know she was officially part of the order.

“Ms. Y/l/n, thanks for showing interest in our work, but I’m afraid we must erase your memories.”

Y/n blinked, not sure if she was hearing right,” Pardon?”

“We just don’t think we can trust you. What if you are under the imperious curse right at this moment and are deceiving us. We cannot have anyone suspicious here and that includes you, I’m afraid.”

Sirius had thought his pranking days had been over and that he would be rusty but seeing the Slytherin’s reaction, he knew he still had it in him.

“And it would be better if we modified your memories with Hermione as well, so as to not complicate anything. That is the only way left.” Lupin joined in, knowing what his best friend was up to.

Y/n gaped for a solid moment before breaking out of her trance,” I do not consent.”

“What?”

“ I said, I do. Not. consent.” Y/n spoke, as she grit her teeth so as to not to lose her temper.

She huffed before getting up from her seat,” I am sorry that you do not trust me. And I wish I could tell you I’d break up with Hermione for the cause, but I’m afraid I cannot. I will not give up on us. A few months ago, I might’ve, but not now. And I hope you understand.”

Dusting her cloak slightly, she bid her farewell,” I’ll take leave of you now. Goodnight.”

Just as she was about to move towards the door, she noticed how no one in the room had protested against her statements and were…actually smiling.

She furrowed her eyebrows in confusion and Molly couldn’t help but bring the girl into a bear hug,” Oh, you little sweetheart! You are here to stay, don’t worry. These two were just pulling your leg.”

Y/n stood uncomfortably in the hug, not used to so much affection or gentle-touch and Arthur seemed to notice, causing him to chuckle at his wife,” Would you let the poor girl go now or squeeze all the air out of her?”

“Oh shush!” Molly retorted, breaking the hug.

“Don’t worry, you’ll get used to these hugs soon enough.” Sirius whispered, giving a gentle smile before retiring for bed, just like all the adults were doing.

“Oh dear, have you had anything to eat? Would you like something warm?” Molly asked, turning around right before she exitted as well. And before Y/n could answered, she answered it herself,” Let me warm up a nice cup of hot chocolate. I suggest you stay the night here and leave when the sun is out. Your excuse of going on a walk might work better then.”

And yet again, before the slytherin could give any sort of reply, Molly had left for the kitchen.

“Hot chocolate sounds nice.” Hermione commented, intertwining her arms around yours.

Y/n just gave a small smile as she shrugged, not knowing how to react to this behaviour. Hermione seemed to notice, but she didn’t comment which Y/n was grateful about.

“Little mistress?”

Both the girls turned around, seeing Dobby standing in the hallway.

“You do know I was never actually your mistress right? Especially not now.” Y/n teased.

“Y/n Y/l/n will always be little mistress to Dobby.” The house-elf smiled.

Y/n turned to look at her girlfriend who seemed to understand these two wanted a little alone time and left the corridor wordlessly.

The Slytherin stalked towards Dobby and knelt down,” Are you really alright here, Dobby?”

“Dobby would never lie.” Dobby’s face held a sadder expression,” Is little mistress alright?”

The girl didn’t have the heart to lie to the elf who was one of the closest beings she had in her life but she didn’t want him worrying and telling anyone here either. So she just shrugged.

Dobby frowned before gently grabbing the Slytherin’s hand, pulling the sleeve up, uncovering multiple bruises. They didn’t look very fresh but they weren’t that old either.

“Dobb-”

“Still?” Dobby interrupted.

Yet again the girl shrugged,” it’s just the regular duelling bruises….and a couple punishment ones for not doing well but that isn’t anything new, Dobby. You know that.”

“Dobby knows, that’s why it hurts Dobby more.” The elf whispered, his eyes filling with tears.

And finally giving into her urge of having not held the elf in a long while, she hugged him tight.

“They are good people, Mistress.”

Y/n loosed the hug, looking at the elf as he spoke,” Harry Potter’s friends. You don’t need to pretend here.”

The slytherin smiled slightly but her face still held sadness as the tears in her eyes begged to be released,” That might be so, but maybe I’ve been pretending long enough to actually become some of my lies.”

“Dobby doesn’t believe that, and he won’t let little mistress believe so either.” His voice was resolute, causing the teenager to chuckle.

“As you say, Dobby.”

Unbeknownst to both of them, there was Hermione nearby, accidentally having overheard their conversation as she held both of their hot chocolate in her hands.

She couldn’t decide if she was happy or sad for Y/n. She hadn’t been able to hear all of their conversation but she knew it wasn’t anything happy. She could make out that much from the few words she got here and there.

She gave them a couple more minutes before entering the hallway,” Hey..”

Y/n quickly wiped whatever tears she had lingered on her lashes and turned around.

“Dobby shall leave now. Take care little mistress.” And with that, he was gone.

“Let’s go to my room? You look like you could use some rest.” Hermione gave a small smile as she handed the Slytherin her mug of hot chocolate.

Her girlfriend hesitated and it didn’t go unnoticed by the Gryffindor.

Understanding the silent question on the brunette’s face, the Slytherin prefect spoke up,” Would it be alright with you if we spent time in the living room?”

“Do you not want to sleep? I can see the dark circles under your eyes, Y/n/n.” Hermione inquired, curious by this sudden request.

But Y/n shook her head,” I am tired, that cannot be denied. But I would like to spend some time with you before I leave, instead of sleeping it away.”

The reason warmed Hermione’s heart and her giddy smile gave away her happiness, which Y/n wasn’t that appreciative of,” What? Is it not natural to want to spend time with one’s partner?”

She looked away at a random corner while scowling to hide her blush. She wasn’t one to be sappy and even when she was, she would much rather have that be unmentioned.

“I don’t mind. Come on, I’ll get the fireplace going.” Hermione offered as she handed Y/n her mug of hot chocolate overloaded with marshmallows.

“That’s quite an amount.” Y/n gestured at the marshmallows before taking a seat on the carpet.

Hermione would lie if she said she wasn’t surprised by the elite sitting on the floor,” Why are you sitting on the floor? There’s an armchair right there.”

But all the Slytherin did was shrug and pat the space beside her,” It’s cosy. Come quick.”

It was quite for a while, only the crackle of the fire filling the room. The girls didn’t mind, it helped quite their minds.

“What was that you said to Dobby?” Hermione asked out of nowhere. It seemed like she had been trying to decipher that for a while.

Y/n chuckled,” It’s our way of asking if he’s alright. I came up with it when I was about five years old. I would ask if he snuck some cupcakes which meant if he had gotten himself into any trouble trying to find some freedom within his enslavement. Or just to ask if he had done something not right to try to be happy, in some simpler sense.”

“And he said we give him cupcakes,” Hermione stated, the question imbedded in it to which the Slytherin nodded.

“Yes. That meant he didn’t have to get in trouble to be free anymore. Or break rules to live his life. It was the first time ever he used it, I believe.”

Hermione was hesitant to ask, but still went ahead with it,” What would he usually say?”

Y/n didn’t take her eyes off of the fire,” Initially, around the time we coined these phrases he would say,’ Yes little Mistress, I tried to.’ But as time went on and Uncle’s punishments became crueller, he would always say,’ There are no cupcakes to sneak’ ”.

“Where is Harry, Hermione?” she continued.

Hermione noted how the Slytherin had used the boy’s first name but decided not to mention it,” Uh, he’s at his Aunt’s place.”

Without pausing for long, Y/n turned to face Hermione, her face almost looking terrified,’ ‘Mione, you need to be more cautious. Things are going to get a lot worse.”

It irked Hermione that she couldn’t even enjoy the nickname from her girlfriend since the matter she referred to seemed….worrisome.

“The Dark Lord is back, of course, things are going to get a lot worse.” Hermione quipped.

But her girlfriend shook her head, as if she wasn’t able to see what she truly meant. How could she? She knew nothing.

“No. That’s not what I mean. Something is going to happen this year at Hogwarts. Something big. And probably not something anyone would be prepared for.” She had observed her relatives to know they had something unwraps.

“Then why are you being so cryptic? Aren’t you to work as our informer now?” Hermione queried. But the Slytherin looked pained when she replied.

“ Yes. But even I don’t know what it is yet.”

Well, she did know now, Y/n thought.

She glanced at her brother’s arm for a second when a smoke bomb exploded in their compartment.

Once the smoke had cleared up, she could see that Draco was a bit more riled up with the sudden surprise.

A moment after, Draco went back to yapping about how horrible Hogwarts was and how stupid their headmaster is. He came close to revealing their secret when she effectively glared at him and made him stop.

Catching himself, he changed the direction of his sentence and gave a more vague one. That’s when something caught her eye.

She looked up at the compartment, feeling like something had moved.

It took her a minute before she connected the dots. And one look at her brother, it seemed like the movement had caught his eye too.

Dear Merlin. You are such an idiot Potter’ she cursed.

Once the train stopped, she tried to linger but caught her brother staying back as well.

“All well Draco?” she asked.

He just nodded,” Yeah, I just need to check something. You go ahead.”

“Do you need hel-”

“No. I said go ahead.” Draco insisted. Y/n gritted her teeth before getting off the train.

‘Dammit Potter’

She lingered on the side, at a blindspot waiting for her cousin to get off. She couldn’t even go and contact the Gryffindor Prefect in public.

Once he was off, she went inside to find Luna Lovegood already helping Harry up.

Seeing how he had company to take care of him, she left undetected, joining a random group of Slytherins to get back to the castle.

She waited in the common room for Draco to come back from dinner. Once he did, she made sure he stayed until the entire place was empty.

“What did you want?” the boy asked, confused.

Y/n made him sit beside her before she spoke,” You need to be more careful.”

Draco scowled, offended and quickly jumped to defend himself before his sister cut him off,” Stop. Draco, what you did was reckless! Prattling about-”

The girl stopped herself and lowered her voice,” about things that no one other than us should know about! Are you trying to get caught?”

One thing the boy absolutely hated was being talked down to, which his sister seemed to do always. And even though he knew she was right, he would never admit it,” Oh please. I handled that very well.”

After another thought, he continued,” And what if I did? They would only want to help us. Other than those pesky Gryffindors,no one wants Du-”

Y/n placed her hand on his mouth, effectively shushing him from continuing,” Are you in your fucking senses, you muttonhead!”

Not favouring her choice of insult Draco did the only thing that popped in his brain.

He licked her palm.

“Ew! You vile gargoyle, what childishness is this!?” Y/n exclaimed, internally gagging at the saliva that coated her palm before rubbing it off on her cousin’s robes.

“Well, you shouldn’t have called me a muttonhead.”

Y/n just gaped before scoffing,” I will call you what you are. Truth hurts, dear cousin.”

Shaking her head she continued,“We are going nowhere with this. Just shut your trap and carry out the mission properly, you hear me?”

“Since when did I start answering you?” Draco challenged, towering over his cousin with his arms crossed over his chest.

“Since I was born with more braincells than you.” Y/n answered, unfazed. Her cousin tended to be childish which was nothing new for her.

Growing a little red, Draco trudged up closer,” I think you are jealous that I was chosen. Not you, but me.”

Y/n just narrowed her eyes at him, biting any retort bubbling up her throat. None would help her.

Draco smirked at the lack of a reply before whistling back to his chambers,” Goodnight dear cousin.”

Y/n stared at the door to the boy’s dorms as Aunt Cissy’s voiced echoed in her head.

‘Take care of your brother for me Y/n. Please.’

She curled up her fists tightly as she tried to get her breathing to slow down.

“What mission?”

Startled out of her skin,Y/n turned around quicker than a whirlwind and came face to face with a raven-haired girl she had missed dearly.

“Good evening Scyl” she gave her a small smile, though not getting one in return.

“What mission, Y/n?” Scylla pressed, walking closer to the Slytherin prefect.

“It is nothing you need to worry about. I…” Y/n looked at the ceiling and took a deep breath before forcing a smile,” I got it under control.”

She tried walking past her best friend, not knowing if she should involve the other girl and potentially endanger her more than she already was when a hand caught hers.

She was pulled back quite forcefully before the same hand held her jaw and made her face the said girl,” No more. I am done with your secrets. I can see the cogs turning in your head and they are not good.”

When Y/n went to protest, she was effectively stopped before she could even begin,” No bullshit about trying to do whats best. I am in as much danger as you, whether I know what in this fucking world you are up to or not. So I would rather know.”

Staring at the resolution in the Slytherin’s eyes, the prefect relented. There was no stopping Scylla once she had her mind set. It was a miracle she hadn’t forced Y/n to spill her guts way before.

“Let’s go to my chambers.”
