Plants and Pups

The next few posts, I’ll introduce you to my three gorgeous dogs and a plant or two.

This is Kenji, a Chihuahua- Dachshund mix. He loves being close to my plants and under the sun. He also loves to cuddle!

The plants featured:

-Elegia tectorum

-Tibouchina heteromalla (flower)

Do you love when your dogs have a good relationship with your plants?

Guatemalan vibes added to my IKEA Plant cabinet. What do you think?

My IKEA cabinet has most of the tropical plants that require consistent humidity and light.

This keeps humidity around 85%~90%. If it drops, I can easily turn on a small humidifier at times.

The growing lights are on a timer. I can control intensity and hours per day.

Currently all is growing well! From begonias to heart fern to calatheas.

? !

made this space in my room where the light shines perfectly <3

What’s on my : this nursery (@valleyviewgardens) specializes in tropical foliage. LOOK UP: the shade cloth lining the greenhouse roof is there to attenuate the direct sun’s 9000+ foot-candles to the typical commercial growing intensity, ~1000-2000 ft-c.

I’ve seen several repotting posts recently so I’ll share one that I did over the weekend

I’ve seen several repotting posts recently so I’ll share one that I did over the weekend: I needed two spider plants to be potted in identical pots - this pure green version was in a 6" pot. I LOVE unpotting plants: it’s a chance to look under the hood; to check for anything gone funky (rotted); and just to appreciate parts of the plant you rarely see.
-
2) this spider plant is severely root bound: see how the root matter has essentially filled up the bottom of the pot, pushing out the soil over the past few months. On the bright side, these roots are very healthy - fleshy, bright colored, no brown/black mushy parts at all (I’m quite surprised cuz there’s usually SOME decay).
-
3) your soil aerator (aka chopstick) is also a great tool for gently untangling roots. As @ohiotropics noted in a recent post, you must untangle the roots before repotting in order for the whole process to be worthwhile.
-
I’d also like to pass along some great advice from @that_one_plant_guy - if you’re amending soil with perlite (the white foamy granules) - rinse it off first to get rid of the dust particles!

Lots of light? Yes, an unobstructed view of the sky floods this hallway with light.
Lots of sun? Not really. There’s a patch of direct sun that moves across the walls/floors. The parasol helps to diffuse the direct sun so these tropical foliage plants don’t burn or wilt permanently.
-
Think about direct sun separate from the view of the sky and you will begin to understand the daily/seasonal variations of light. Treat them as the same thing, and you’ll be confused.

Watch the droplet deflection as this Senecio haworthii (cocoon plant) gets a shower. Note: this is not how I would normally water the plant, I just wanted to see how the water behaves against the leaves.

An hour or two of direct sun on this staghorn fern is acceptable but then the plant would reach critical dryness faster, meaning that I would have to water sooner (and yes, I have to take the whole plant down, run it in the shower, wait for it to stop dripping, and then carefully lift it back onto the hook).
-
Light modifier: a white sheer curtain to diffuse direct sun. It’s a great way to lessen the heat stress on your plants that prefer “bright indirect light” (no need to do this for cacti).
-
2) In a nursery growing tropical foliage plants, shade cloth is used for the same purpose.
-
Staghorn fern watering strategy: given adequate lighting, I just feel the sphagnum moss. When it reaches the point of feeling dry but still soft, then I can water sometime within the week. If I wait longer, the moss becomes hard: that’s the WATER IMMEDIATELY signal.

Marimo ball owners: have you ever noticed your ball sometimes afloat and other times not?
-
1) ball is resting at the bottom right now (8:30am).
2) ball was floating last night around midnight.
-
What could cause this change in buoyancy? Is it metabolic activity differences between night and day? I haven’t touched or disturbed the water in the past 2 weeks and I’m certain I’ve noticed it both floating and sinking. One thing is for sure: this calls for a time lapse! ⌚ = observe-for-long-time-with-camera

I bought a new plant yesterday! It was on clearance for only $4 at the grocery store because it’s got some dried spots, but the stem seems healthy and it has new growth that looks healthy too, so I took it home, feeling confident it will bounce back from whatever abuse it suffered previously. It’s labeled as a Banana Plant, and I know they can get fairly large, and I felt the $4 I paid was a steal for a potentially big houseplant - but after I brought it home I did some googling on care, and after reading about just how big and how fast they can grow, I’m sweating a little. I’m slightly afraid of what I might have gotten myself into.
