Tarac  160 years old and appears 45  OPEN

“Magicians don’t win wars, but they come in really handy.”

✚ Occupation: Teacher & Doctor
✚ Specification: -
✚ Magical form: -
✚ Race: Demon

❖ Tarac is loyal, intelligent, and brave.

Biography -

The Demonlands have always been at war, and everyone has a certainty that they will be affected by it, one way or another. Tarac was born an orphan, his mother died during birth, and his father had perished in battle a year earlier. This resulted in him being sent to a home, where he grew up a true patriot, since the orphanage stood in light of their Lord. The children that turned eighteen were happy to know they could join the army without the needed paper fill-out. Yet, as a youngster, Tarac saw no gain in becoming a soldier, so he took every free hour to write his essays on Magical forms and abilities, his most famous later would be his essay on the Black Dragon Magic that only three in the world possessed at once. Instead of doing as all his friends did, he created his way out of such a faith, being called on by Varamadras just when his need was greatest. Eighteen years old, and he was already good on his way to becoming important for the Demonic community.

Tarac became a teacher and tutor at Varamadras’ command, which gave him the opportunity to become close to the Lord of Demons. Their friendship grew easily, as his sad past was of effect on his leader. A few years later he was on his way to take a role much more important than he could have thought.

With a spot suddenly open among the Elite, Tarac was Varamadras’ first choice. He was twenty-five when he took upon his calling, and until now, he has properly held his station. His tasks are teaching new DracoMancers, and acting as their doctor when it comes to magical issues rather than physical pains. His knowledge is far reaching since he has access to the greatest library in the Fifth Gate, which is located in HagaFosiel, and knows how to use facts from old stories to help the Magicians of a new era in controlling their magic. Though he has no magic of his own, he is respected by most, his ability to solve problems has helped many Mancers. He also acts as a path of communication between Varamadras and his strongest leaders, including Se’ref Fveran in HagaFosiel. His loyalty is never questioned, he rose up under his master’s care, and deprives all his accomplishments from the chance that was given him.

Personality -

Tarac is a caring and friendly person, his teachings are well practiced, and he will do what lies in his powers to solve the problems of others, which are always magic based. He always tries to encourage others to go beyond what they know about their own abilities, never to give up. For the past few years he has lived in both Morto, where he teaches his students, and HagaFosiel, which has become his home. Traveling has made him able to expand what he knows, and he’s never afraid to go further. Most don’t expect him to be brave, since he has no power of his own, and his fighting skills have never been trained, since he got out of the war before he was ever in it. But friends like Varamadras and Se’ref will tell otherwise, Tarac’s advice in the council which he is part of being both modern and full of courage.

Tarac is friends with most of the Elite Mancers, as well as some younger ones. He knows all his students, their problems and their greatest abilities. According to his function, he is supposed to know the few that matter the most to the Demonlord. He’s close with Se’ref Fveran, Semiel Hyert, Loriente Seasel, and Bastivan Nowell, all who use the library in HagaFosiel often, which officially is now Tarac’ property. Years ago Tarac was brought an orphaned WoodElf, who he took under his wing. Until Deametis, the name of the girl, had been scanned and taken to Yartihn to be trained as a Mancer, she lived under his wing as his own daughter, and he still feels responsible for her.

Connections -

Se’ref Fveran ❖ Living both in HagaFosiel, Se’ref and Tarac function as Varamadras’ main advisors, which they truthfully enjoy, even if they don’t often agree on things. They respect each other’s office, and share their knowledge over a warm cup of tea.

Deametis ❖ Tarac feels responsible for Deametis, ever since finding her and taking her under his care. She is not the perfect daughter, but he will always love her for the way she is. His father role is more to make sure she’s feeling alright and he does not tell her how to make her decisions.

Semiel Hyert ❖ Semiel is Tarac’s student and protégé, they meet up a lot so he can teach the young Black Dragon Magician all he needs to know about being a General, about leading armies, about how others have do this in the history of the Fifth Gate. They have special lessons, and Tarac believes fully in his skill.

Rast Grants ❖ New to Tarac’s library was for some time the young Rast Grants, who had come under his wing after deciding to switch loyalties to join the DracoMancers. They shared a love for books, and Tarac enjoyed how Rast was always looking for more knowledge and showed interest in everything thrown at him. He had however, never saw it coming that Rast was in fact a Knight of Jewantes, and a serious threat on his Demon Lord’s life.

SHE LEARNED FROM THE BEST

Lehain Feadan ✚ 46 years old and appears 23 OPEN

“There’s always much more going on than we know, trust me.”

✚ Occupation: DracoMancer
✚ Specification: Second in Command
✚ Magical form: Water Magic
✚ Race: Teccup

❖ Lehain is friendly, content, and intelligent.

Biography -

Lehain does not remember a time before she came to Varamadras’ strong castle in Yartihn. She was born in Teccupia, but does not recall what the land looks like or what city she came from, other than it was cold and night. The Mancers and Lath Magicians that found her never spoke a word, and by the time she graduated, she couldn’t recall what they had looked like or if they were even still alive. She missed the love she could have received from parents, yet she found it in the friends she made during her education. The fate of death came into her life many a time, first with the Mancer who had taken care of her after she came to Morto to be raised and trained later on, and then with the teacher she had graduated under. She lost so many people, that in the end, she wasn’t placed in a new group anymore, and though she didn’t become part of Varamadras Elite, did become friends with them. She was instead sent on missions to retrieve Dark Souls that needed her help. Though years were filled with war and friends she made frequently died, it all seemed part of life.

A few years ago, she saved Torque Martain, a Dark Soul who had passed under their radar for a very long time, and when he became a groupleader, she insisted to join his group and help him with anything he might need – though Torque turned to Gearett Toss for most of his questions. She suddenly was back into the action she had lived with before, a member of a group once again. But she had been adjusted to special missions, so Varamadras promised her missions outside of those she did with her group. She became a member of the Elite, not because she was so strong, but because she was multi-talented.

Personality -

She has feelings for Torque, who she had met before he joined the DracoMancer, since she was part of his rescue party. She’s kind and strong, intelligent and content. Many know better than to face her in battle, she’s very skilled with her Water Magic, and Torque tries to help her reach the first phase of Magical ability. Others mostly think she’s easily caught off guard, imagining she might be a strong kid, but every girl has her issues. Not Lehain, though, having learned from Marius Thesus, one of the best Water Magicians, she knows that people can always try to hurt you, but not if you’re better than them.

Lehain is good friends with almost everybody, but nobody in particular. She always turns around everybody, while no one ever meets her at the center. She’s content with it though, seeing that having more friends is to her benefit. The ones she truly gets close with are those that belong to her group: Gearett Toss, Sortos Nefenson and Torque Martain. She also hangs out with the Elite, which has made her respected by a lot of Mancers that can only dream of such a place. Even some groupleaders aren’t trusted as a part of that group.

Fate -

Unknown

Connections -

Torque Martain ❖ Torque gives her many unofficial lessons in trying to reach Phase One, a certain extend of her Magic she wants to have, but knows only he can help her with that. They are often in each other’s company, and she likes him a lot, though more like a teacher and friend than how she thinks he sees her.

Gearett Toss ❖ Gearrett is a member of the group, and thus a friend without doubt. They don’t hang out that much, they only train together, and fight together at some points. Other than that, Lehain isn’t really interested in keeping in touch with him, she knows however that there is no way around him, and his heritage interests her a lot.

Sortos Nefeson ❖ Sortos has a doubtful past, and a lot of things he hasn’t told any of them yet. Like, how Varamadras found him? Where he was before? She tries to get the answers to those questions, though she knows she might never get them from this boy who is as closed off a she appears.

Group -

Lehain Feadan is part of the group under Torque Martain.

THE LORD'S FRIEND

Semiel Hyert  37 years old and appears 40  OPEN

“We should be thankful that Varamadras is here to care for us, we would’ve been dead without him.”

✚ Occupation: DracoMancer
✚ Specification: Military General
✚ Magical form: Black Dragon Magic
✚ Race: Elf

❖ Semiel is intelligent, loyal, and a leader.

Biography -

As an Elf and no stranger to the way of magic, it had not been expected of him to be a Dark Soul, because it is rare. When scanned by a Lath Magician, Semiel had to flee. Very soon he was found by Varamadras and taken under his wings. It has been a long time ago, and he has grown into one of the Lord’s best friends. Because of his Magical form, Semiel has been allowed to more information than others, after he graduated under his lord. Right now he’s following a military training with Tarac, because Varamadras plans on sending him to lead the army in Stronghold when they have taken out the whole royal line of Nether. He was eight when he was brought to Yartihn, his promise of the rare Magic form gave him more respect than most. Unlike others, Semiel got to talk to the older Mancers, learning from them outside of his normal classes. He had to be ready for the big fights, since as one of the strongest Magicians alive, and the successor of Michael Judiut, he had a big gap to fill. And he managed excellent.

Semiel hasn’t seen many fights, he was told to stay away from most of them, and study his enemies rather than take them out on the battlefield. He has never really been in a fight till death, mostly joining in with others, finishing their lives off as easily as he can. He is strong, his Magic has known no better days then after being trained by Varamadras. They still train together at times, but he knows that he will never be as strong as the Demon Lord, who has had years and years, yet managed to reach his full potential around when he finished the revolution. What it takes is the need to know your Magic, plus that one moment when your life is in danger.

Personality -

Semiel is loyal and a leader that never stops caring about his soldiers. He’s a few years away from taking a high place in one of the army’s very legions. No one should underestimate him. He’s very intelligent, far advanced in military skills, and spends most of his times in books. Semiel might seem like the proper evil, but he’s actually the nice guy that will do whatever to please his lord. He’s a kind man, knows his way around others in a sense that he cares for a conversation and wants to hear how he can help others. Similar to Varamadras, having learned from him since he was a child, he looks up to him as a father, and takes after him much. In most situations, Semiel is a person people look up to, acting proud and strong, yet this is only how people are meant to see him.

Semiel has a fairly good relationship with Pane Elacante, since they are among Varamadras’ elite. In secret, he is in love with Pane, but knows or thinks that she has feelings for the Demonlord, and will never see him as more than a friend and companion. Semiel likes to talk to younger students and Mancers, allowing himself to become friends with every single one of them, as he is used to. The pain of losing someone he loves or cares for makes him more willing to fight for what he believes in.

Fate -

Semiel will make it through the Battle of Faum.

Connections -

Varamadras Itaul ❖ Even while Varamadras is Semiel’s Demon Lord and thus has a higher position, he still considers the two of them as equals. They share their love for knowledge and Semiel will always remain loyal to his Lord and his best friend.

Pane Elacante ❖ Pane being some years older than him, and having known the Mancer who held the Black Dragon Magic before him, didn’t put them off to a great start. But Semiel came to love Pane like a friend at first, before noticing that she was far more important to him than that.

Tarac ❖ Semiel and Tarac are on the same level when it comes to knowledge, they love their books, and while Semiel believes himself to be equal to Varamadras, Tarac will always be his superior because of everything he knows and will always remain teaching him.

Imotar ❖ Imotar was given to Semiel as a gift, after he became a DracoMancer. To Semiel the Dragon is more than just his overgrown horse, he is a friend, a companion and the only one he needs to rely on during a battle.

Announcing Jew in the City’s 2014 Orthodox Jewish All Stars!!

“In 2012, when we created this award, we focused on shattering people’s misconceptions about Orthodox Jews and what they could accomplish professionally. Last year, when Chanukah historically intersected with Thanksgiving, we celebrated the religious freedoms that exist in the world today which allow people of all faiths to excel in a variety of career paths,” said Allison Josephs, Jew in the City founder and director.

“This year, our message is our most crucial one yet: With anti-Semitic attacks on the rise across the globe, we are celebrating ten individuals who proudly observe Jewish traditions as they’ve soared to the tops of their fields.”

Five Public Cases on Intelligence

Occasionally, our correspondent Anthony Madrid composes a set of quasi-koans; these are his latest.

Public Case 1: Anxieties

Our teacher said: “Anxieties about one’s intelligence are never anxieties about one’s intelligence. What’s actually at issue is whether we inspire envy in others (very acceptable), or whether we are ourselves obliged to feel envy (unacceptable). Those are the actual stakes. No one frets about whether her brain is adequate to the tasks of her life.”

Comment. An old trick. Teacher boldly admits he is mean and vain; therefore he may call you mean and vain. But how much does he really want to enlighten his students, if his method for combating vanity is to humiliate it? He says, in effect: “You are conning yourself. You pretend to worry about how smart you are, so you may seem—to yourself—to be honest and humble. You know for a fact people think you’re smart, but that’s not good enough; you want ’em to suffer…” Upshot: Everyone walks away having exempted themselves from the criticism, and firmly identifying with the authority figure. In short, meaner and vainer than ever.

Being smart and good at thinking is something people are envious of but what they don’t realize is that the world was not made for people like that.

Being smart means being lonely. It means being able to create an amazing world inside your head and being forced to stay there.

It means being able to discuss extremely interesting topics but having nobody to do it with or doing it so rarely cause people get bored of you easily as you’re not “fun”.

It means having passions and always wondering if you’re good enough as you can always learn more and be better. It means the awareness of how much you still don’t know.

And it means people always saying that they are not familiar with the topic or never thought of it so they have nothing to say to you.

It means compensating with fictional characters cause there is nobody in your life except for them.

Being smart and good at thinking means starting a story and realizing nobody is listening because nobody cares or wants to understand so you slowly fade away and they don’t even notice you’re not talking anymore. Except it’s not a moment but your whole life.
