#jj abrams
JJ brought the lighstaber back, her staff back, her outfit back, the death star back, frigging palpy back, kale’s mask back, and made the trio have screentime togehter he really said screw rian lives
rian: “let the past die. kill it if you have to”
jj: “no one’s ever really gone”
Honestly, with finn and poe, I want to be mad, but I can’t. Sure, it would be amazing if they were canon, and it would have been monumental if they had been the ones to break a stigma that is still surrounding movies today. But the love is there. You can choose to see it or you can choose not to, but it will always be there. Both actors played that shit to their best abilities for what they were allowed to do, and the words they’ve spoken about the matter are as big. John and Oscar don’t brush it under the rug. Oscar fought for it on and offscreen and never once gave into the “no, that would be cool, but Poe is straight in the movies” that other actors would have. Whether we got an onscreen kiss or not, it doesn’t take much of a scratch to the surface to see what was meant to be there.
Canon would have been better, but we can always look at the progress these two have made towards it.

**CW/TW racist slurs & remarks**
It’s been well-documented that racism surrounding the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy erupted in an overt social media boycott stemming from a few fringe members of the Star Wars fandom. Star Wars Episode VII was originally accused of being “anti-white” and promoting “white genocide” because John Boyega was a Black stormtrooper and other leading faces were not white…
Jedi Finn in the Leaked The Force Awakens Shot List #StarWars
John Boyega recently criticized Disney and Lucasfilm for sidelining Finn even while advertising him as a Jedi character ahead of the first movie. The shot list leaked before The Force Awakens strongly indicates Finn was indeed meant to be Force Sensitive and a co-protagonist with Rey.
There’s something interesting to note in John Boyega’s recent interview with GQ magazine where he called out the sidelining of Finn in the Sequel Trilogy. While John Boyega is clearly upset (and rightly so) with how his character was treated in the trilogy he appears to cast no blame at J.J. Abrams despite the fact that Abrams directed and co-wrote The Rise of Skywalkerwhich is arguably just as…
This is all but explicit confirmation that the JJ cut for TROS is real.
Fridging the woman for manpain. in 2019.
This comic is hilariously bad beyond the cheap fridging too, just a bland hodgepodge of Spider-Girl, Spider-Man: Reign, and some elements from the Spider-Man movies without offering something remotely interesting, original or anything of creative value. Sad to see Pichelli’s art wasted on this.
There were things I loved and things I really didn’t like about TROS, but my favorite part is watching the Reylo fandom openly become the very thing it has claimed they stood against. So many of you going after JJ, a real fucking person who CREATED the reylo y’all claim to love more than anything that it’s causing you to harass and demean a real person over fictional characters when you railed against the antis and fanboys for doing it to Rian when TLJ came out.
I’m not even surprised you all are doing this after the way you treated @corariley and myself. Honestly, thank you for harassing me out of the fandom last year because it forced me to live in the real world and in doing so I met my soulmate, finished my schooling, went to counseling for my mental heath issues, and have a great new job. I am honestly grateful because I could be loosing it like so many of you to the point where I can’t distinguish fiction from reality.
To my friends who are upset and handling this with poise, your feelings are valid and I support you. To the rest of you who are handling it like monsters, karma is a bitch and you honestly don’t deserve anymore Reylo for hurting real people over fictional characters. Y’all are fucked and I wouldn’t be surprised that even if they wanted to retcon Ben’s death to make more movies sometime in the future (which after this whole TLJ retconned movie, I could see happening), I doubt that JJ and other Lucasfilm creators would do so because of how fucking awful you’re being. You’re just like the fanboys who bullied George Lucas so bad that he sold his franchise to Disney. The ones that harassed Hayden to the point of him quitting acting.
The excuse of, “Reylo is my life…it saved me” is bullshit…obviously Reylo didn’t help you with your mental illness if you believe you are justified to harass living people over imaginary characters. There’s nothing wrong with loving reylo and being upset, but hurting LIVING people is not okay. I’m not surprised though after witnessing the behavior here for the last four years. Also, before anyone starts calling out my past behavior…I know it was shitty and I admit it, but at the same time it was most of the time in response to people being elitist fandom assholes and I have moved on from it, whether you have I honestly don’t care. I have nothing to lose at this point because I do not care about my reputation in the fandom. The difference between us is that I’ve at least grown as a person in the four years since TFA has come out whereas so many of you are addicted to tumblr and Reylo to the point where you cannot understand that real people take presidence over fictional characters.
You’ve become the very thing you were meant to destroy. Good luck being known as the rabid fan girls who told JJ to die over a fictional character, this Reylo refuses to be associated with your shameful behavior.
JJ was executive producer for TLJ. He ain’t “saving” anything. Especially not whiny fans who don’t realize their reactions don’t change the plot, and other whiny fans who don’t appreciate the fact that HARRISON wanted Han to go out the way he did (because in case you weren’t paying attention, Ben gave him several opportunities to leave. He didn’t hunt down his father). Grow up already and learn to accept when your hopes aren’t how the story goes (and learn to do it with grace while you’re at it).
“Chewie, we’re home.”
With that line, a million voices seemed to cry out that they all cried at work watching a advertisement. Which is a really weird way to react to marketing (outside of ads for pet shelters.) It’s Han Solo and Chewbacca back at again. Chewie, we’re all home! Wait, didn’t home suck? Hasn’t “Star Wars” sucked since at least 1997? Or maybe 1983 if you’re being honest? Why would you want to go back there? Why would you want to go home? We’re both getting goosebumps - only mine are caused by the thought of unopened Boss Nass figures in a hot suburban garage I never want to go back to. What is everyone so excited about?
What about Star Wars excites you? I won’t waste my time with my bonafides but like Tim from “Spaced,” I’ve made my peace with “Star Wars.”
I just can’t believe how many of you are allowing yourself to be fooled again. It’s the “home” thing, isn’t it? That’s the good stuff - pure medical grade, uncut nostalgia. You just want to go home, that’s why you still watch wrestling, or read comics, root for some team you don’t live any where near - whatever you need do to go “home.”
J.J. Abrams is all about going “home.” His singular marketing innovation (according to J.J.) is the mystery box. It’s so easy to kill him for this TED talk because it exposes everything that makes J.J. Abrams work so weak. Like the best kind of marketers, he’s hiding it in plain sight.
A charming anecdote about about some gift his grandfather gave him he never opened - the mystery is always better than the reality, right? If he had opened it, I’m sure it was just a check for $5 (joke credit to the other love of my life John Sabine.)
J.J.’s whole career is selling you empty boxes addressed to your old house. He wraps them up in things you used to love but everything is just off model. It’s “Star Trek” - but not really; Spielberg -but not really; and now “Star Wars” but not really. Like any licensed piece of material, it mostly just reminds that it isn’t exactly the thing you love. J.J. Abrams is making supermercado “Star Wars” pinatas. I just don’t think I need to wait till December to find out what’s inside.
Do I want it to be good? Of course. Will I see it? Of course. Do I want to believe? Desperately. Almost as much as I want the new “Twin Peaks” to happen and be great, someone to make a “Dune” movie that is as good as the one in my head, or that Chris Carter will make good episodes of a new “X-Files.” I WANT TO BELIEVE - I just know better and so do you. J.J. Abrams makes bad movies - search your heart, you know it to be true.
I get why you are excited. I’m just preaching caution. Neither “Star Wars” nor J.J. Abrams has done much in the last 20 years to earn your trust. If we go back to the last time J.J. Abrams wrote something starring Harrison Ford, we have even more reasons to be concerned.
It’s usually after I’ve stopped at In-N-Out, just after my parents have gone to bed. I’m laying in a tiny old bed, in my tiny old house, where tiny old me dreamt about big and new “Star Wars” movies that I remember - I FUCKING HATE GOING HOME.

Ben Solo has to be redeemed otherwise Leila’s whole life is a tragedy. She has lost her birth mother and father, her adopted mother and father, her friends and colleagues, her planet, brother and her husband and ended to her story is she loses her son to death or the dark side as well? Bullshit!
The story needed to end in redemption, we saw a Skywalker fall to darkness now we’ll see a Skywalker rise from darkness.

As someone who spent a fair portion of our 365 Days of Movies project covering the Marvel Cinematic Universe it truly pains me to say this but… I’m kind of over comic book movies: at least for the moment. As much as I heart Marvel and as much as I hate DC, I’m just… I’m good on the comic book front for a while. I’m a bit shell shocked from these larger than life struggles watching characters that are essentially gods use their magical powers and chemically enhanced talents to save space time forever while straining to save their personal relationships in the B line.
It’s fun, it’s been brilliantly executed (at least by Marvel), and I want more of it, just… not yet. I love the grounded realism and the honest human relationships that the MCU has built their success around but sometimes I want some subtlety, some nuance, and most of all some optimism.
The world of comic book movies has been a dark and serious place over the last decade and for the most part, that’s a great thing. Grounding such fantastical characters such as Thor, Loki, and even Superman in a realistic modern world with concrete motivations, abilities, and limitations is exactly what needed to happen for the medium to thrive in our present day. But in a world where death can rain from the sky at any time be it aliens through wormholes or planes through buildings, even the smartest, snarkiest, and bravest of SUPERHEROES can’t avoid a healthy dose of PTSD. So where does that leave US? Where can we turn when the ominous pressure of looming apocalypse gets to be too much? I believe the answer is the same now as it has been for the last 50 years.
The world needs Star Trek.
Now to be clear, I don’t mean JJ Abram’s masterful re-envisioning of the Star Trek Cinematic Universe, if you will. Although I love it and have literally received permission from my wife to name our first-born son Abram, the Star Trek television series have always dug deeper and swung harder than their big screen counterparts. While most casual viewers will remember Star Trek for it’s wild costumes and seemingly endless configurations of almost human foreheads, real Trekkies/Trekkers appreciate it for its deep geopolitical roots, it’s philosophical quandaries, and it’s glimpse into an ideal human future where the best weapons are our words, our integrity, and diplomacy. Maybe with a photon torpedo or two for flavor.
Trek has always been a home for morality, exceptionalism, innovation, and humanity. It asks questions that don’t always have cut and dry answers. As much as I love seeing city destroying robots take a hammer to the face, sometimes I want to see Captain Picard trying to explain to Data why terrorism is effective, and sometimes it’s the only choice, but that still doesn’t necessarily make it right. I know we still have seven whole seasons of TNG to get into that stuff but for one, I’ve seen them all, and secondly, we live in a very different world than we did twenty years ago.
We have new problems and new questions. We have technology (thanks largely to Trek in the first place) whose ultimate ramifications we may not fully understand. Of course there are elements of these issues in modern storytelling. Black Mirror for one does a jaw-dropping job of taking our current cultural and technological obsessions to their logical futuristic extremes. But coming from the mind of biting British satirist Charlie Booker leaves the entire series with a decidedly pessimistic tilt. Game of Thrones has a huge expanse of characters and settings but their politics are largely driven by scandal and flashy reveals. House of Cards is the closest we come to the geo-political aspects but it centers entirely around the sociopathic power grab of a literal murderer. In a world run by Frank Underwoods, we need a Captain Picard.
We need something to help us explore these issues in a way that doesn’t just pretend we can pound these problems into the ground. We need to see people ask questions, think them through, collaborate, and innovate their way to the kind of solutions that Trek always makes us believe are possible. We need a new signpost to the best possible versions of ourselves and that’s what Trek has always been. I need Star Trek. The world needs Star Trek.
My local art museum had a great review of The Rise of Skywalker with some thoughtful points.
JJ Abrams showing naked disdain for Star Trek, and openly stating he really was only doing them in the hopes of getting to make Star Wars one day, only to get his chance to make Star Wars & making it even worse, so bad he killed off Disney’s scheme to release a new Star War every year into eternity…truly iconic
