the dark mother— also called the crone— is a goddess archetype that represents earth’s decay and darkness. she is the old woman of the woods, slowly withering and waning, somber and pensive. she tells us of death’s inevitability in the falling leaves and long nights of autumn and winter. the dark mother also comforts us, however, and reminds us that while the cycle of seasonal death is unavoidable, there will be new growth and brighter days ahead.
this ritual, to be cast around mabon, incorporates autumnal ingredients to ensure the dark mother feels welcome, and to obtain her wisdom and guidance to overcome our own inner darknesses.
☾ two almonds (overcoming hardships, invoking the divine)
☾ myrrh incense (spiritual strength, healing)
☾ a black candle, to represent darkness and protection
☾ a white candle, to represent lightness and cleansing
sit comfortably in your ritual space. light the myrrh incense and let the smoke curl and dance about. whisper amidst the smoke, “dark mother, i welcome you here and embrace your darkness; i only ask that you guide and protect me in its midst.”
light the black candle and warm your hands over its flame— reflect on the hardships you’re enduring (or the hardships to come), the darkness that settles all around us this time of year, and the earthly death that the dark mother brings with her. allow yourself to feel somber, sad, or mournful over these thoughts.
then, light the white candle, and warm your hands here as well. now, think of the unusual beauty that autumn holds, and remember the necessity of hardship and darkness to birth new opportunities and liveliness. do not forget that there will always be an end to your hardships, and happier times await you.
take each almond and hover them over both candle-flames, then eat one; the other is an offering for the dark mother. blow out your candles, and while the incense still burns, bury the almond outside under shallow soil.
let the incense burn out completely.
{this spell is featured in my new book, the cider moon - purchase here}
i wrote a little book of autumn recipes, rituals, and crafts
‘the cider moon - pagan tradition + craft to celebrate the autumn’ is a 28-page hand-illustrated book full of medieval pagan wisdom, autumnal herbal magick, harvest recipes, and meaningful rituals. it’s perfect for the new or experienced witch (and lovers of autumn, halloween, and all things spooky).
this is my masterpiece so far, and i’m so excited to share it with you! ‘the cider moon’ features:
- the history and symbolism of mabon and samhain, the pagan autumn festivals
- a collection of spells which use autumnal herbs and colors
- step-by-step instructions on making walnut shell candles and old pagan wheat-stalk charms
- recipes for cardamom apple cake, a pagan currant shortbread, and roasted spiced squash + potatoes
- an original poem, and LOTS of autumnal illustrations
and much more! check out some photos…
‘the cider moon’ is $10 a copy, and i can ship anywhere in the world! i self-write, edit, illustrate and publish these books all myself - i make them to help pay off my medical debt from years of asthma attacks and ovarian cysts, and also to help with my student debt. if this book interests you, your purchase would help me out immensely!
