Hiccup’s never been one to use his powers with bad intentions. Yet, when he spies a particularly handsome pirate one night he can’t help but hum a low tune to draw the man into the sea so he can get a closer look.
I remember once upon a time, after season 4 of RTTE premiered, wanting season 5 to begin with the Riders searching for each other through the ashfall of the volcano.
And I’m like, oh, this scene with Stoick is probably why.
So, I realized that scene in The Zippleback Experience, where Snotlout hassles Hiccup on behalf of the twins, where Hiccup gets punched and gets his ear flicked, Toothless is not there.
Which is fair. Because if he wasn’t sleeping or something, Snotlout would be even worse trouble than what Barf and Belch would have offered.
Though, Toothless is there for the scene in the Clubhouse afterwards.
they really had to pull through with some convoluted ways to connect the finale with the sequel didn’t they?

and drago ends up looking/finding for a king of the dragons elsewhere… because y’know, they’re way more common than the 1.5 rtte showed us
idgi wouldn’t it have made more sense if they emphasized how he used the knowledge that bewilderbeasts hide underneath islands that dragons don’t fly over like with berserker island?
also i like that we don’t find out what happens to the bewilderbeast underneath berserker island lmao
like that’s not a gaping plot hole at all
i really expected heather and dagur to die the moment they mentioned the dragon being found underneath their island~
as an ominous/tragic ending that would have been a clean (if sad) finale that would explain the lack of those siblings by httyd
and fishlegs’s affection for heather suddenly disappearing and manifesting to one for ruff instead
because then their island being destroyed or whatever would have given some pretty convenient tie-ups
maybe johann somehow escaped and told drago eventually about the bewilderbeast
wouldn’t that be something though if the bewilderbeast in httyd2 was the one that killed its own offspring like what kind of weird juxtaposition-type meta would that be to stoick’s eventual death in protecting his son
you know what though? hiccup’s right. astrid’s always been there for him in a way that goes above and beyond their own relationship because they’re not just lovers or betrothed, they’re also part of a team where hiccup is clearly the leader. they’re partners in a plan that is mostly hiccup’s. they’re part of a tribe which hiccup is the future chief. all these things they’re getting up to (dragon training, dragon hunter fighting, dragon defending, etc.) hiccup and astrid have roles that they fall into which puts their relationship in the backseat for the most part
it’s all these nuances that makes it so that astrid is always paying attention to hiccup but hiccup can’t do the same for astrid and i think it’s neat that there’s at least some acknowledgement of that
You know I’ve always always always wanted an episode or a story line that depicted how the Riders managed to deal with their ancestral history and very recent previous lifestyle of fighting dragons to their current one of befriending and living with them instead
so apparently it’s an annual thing that i rewatch the trilogy and get super sad inspired and paint a landscape. trying to work on my colour balancing and composition and pretty satisfied with how this turned out.

Hi! The previews from the Once There Were Dragons Zine have finally come through! I’m so happy with how mine turned out, and that I finally have something to post. 2020 was wild; thanks to school, covid, and the overall stress of existance right now, I haven’t been nearly as motivated as I’d like. But I;m happy to say that seems to be changing :D
