Today is Hobbit Day! (Sep 22nd) the shared birthday of Bilbo & Frodo Baggins, so finished this morning is this sketch of Bag End, inspired by the countryside around me (and with bits of said countryside littering the photo, complete with all the tiny creatures I unwittingly brought in, and had to capture and put outside again), drawn in pastel pencils on toned paper 21x29cms

This book collects numerous maps and sketches that served as visual aids to Tolkien as he wrote his famous masterpiece. The book also comes in a beautiful slipcase, and is decorated with some of Tolkien’s original artwork.
Ok! So I’ve been wanting to do some more art for Amillo/Omar, Tolkien’s cut Vala of Song that I’ve reworked as the younger brother of Melkor and Manwe, and I wanted to try some different artists styles as well, using each of their designs for Manwe and Melkor to inform how Amillo would look in their styles, and I’m pretty darn pleased with how they all turned out!
@suzannart —holy cow, I love how you do hair! I know you must hear that a ton x) but I remember reading your Silm comics as a young thing and just being blown away by your talent and ability
@phobso/@melkorwashere they’re not gonna see this but holy cow one just can’t not mention Phobs when talking about the Silm art fandom, they’re a staple and of course I had to try their style.
@motherofbees-blog they’re long gone too but my goodness their style is so evocative and beautiful and I love their use of color
@idahlrillion is probably my personal biggest inspiration for my own art and was actually the hardest of all of these for me to recreate just because of how similar our styles can be sometimes, but I think I really managed to make their style stand out, and even though they haven’t posted for a while ya’ll should check out their awesome stuff!

Such cool ideas in Tolkiens earlier works and so many characters to fill in the gaps. Your List of names for the deleted characters was also very helpful. Now I have some more names for my comics xD
Sooooo I made an orc OC! He serves under the white hand (very briefly, he’s very young) and is wounded on a raid outside of Rivendell. Glorfindel and another find him, and he begs for mercy, so they take him into the valley. Shocked to find out that everything he had heard about the free peoples and the orcs was a lie, he decides to try to “reform” and continues to live in Rivendell
