Do Orthodox Jews believe in vaccinating?

Dear Jew in the City,

Lock the kids up…do not sicken everyone. You have no right to impose your beliefs against vaccination on the rest of society.

If you don’t see it this way…advice…leave this country. Go to someplace where ignorance and stupidity are bliss. America is NOT such a place. We lose ours, you will lose yours.

M.A.

Dear M.A.,

Though you have not specified which children you’d like to lock up, based on the news, I’m assuming your message is related to a recent outbreak of measles in California and the news that a percentage of kids in Jewish day schools in California are not vaccinated.

From the tone of your email you are obviously very upset with what’s going on, but you are also misinformed. There is no Jewish law against vaccinations. In fact, most rabbis are probably strong supporters of them.

Jacobson v Massachusetts: It’s Not Your Great-Great-Grandfather’s Public Health Law

Given the changes in constitutional law, public health, and government regulation, what kinds of public health laws that address contagious diseases might be constitutionally permissible today? A law that authorizes mandatory vaccination during an epidemic of a lethal disease, with refusal punishable by a monetary penalty, like the one at issue in Jacobson, would undoubtedly be found constitutional under the low constitutional test of “rationality review.” However, the vaccine would have to be approved by the FDA as safe and effective, and the law would have to require exceptions for those who have contraindications to the vaccine. A law that authorizes mandatory vaccination to prevent dangerous contagious diseases in the absence of an epidemic, such as the school immunization requirement summarily upheld in 1922, also would probably be upheld as long as (1) the disease still exists in the population where it can spread and cause serious injury to those infected, and (2) a safe and effective vaccine could prevent transmission to others.

The legitimacy of compulsory vaccination programs depends on both scientific factors and constitutional limits. Scientific factors include the prevalence, incidence, and severity of the contagious disease; the mode of transmission; the safety and effectiveness of any vaccine in preventing transmission; and the nature of any available treatment. Constitutional limits include protection against unjustified bodily intrusions, such as forcible vaccination of individuals at risk for adverse reactions, and physical restraints and unreasonable penalties for refusal.

COVID-19 mass vaccination behavioural process

From participant observation research conducted in late July to mid-August.

  • Wait times for bookings at the Sydney mass vaccination site are up to two months for non-priority groups
  • Despite holding pre-scheduled appointments, on the day, the public lines up outdoors for up to two-hours. This makes for a physically uncomfortable and de-motivating experience
  • Behavioural barriers during the mass vaccination experience may impact people’s willingness to return for their second dose in a timely way. For example:
    • the line-up system is confusing
    • it’s hard to hear staff directions
    • inadequate accessibility
    • lack of social distancing outdoors
    • few signs and instructions
    • lacking cultural safety for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
    • poorly promoted multilingual services for migrants
    • insufficient communication about extended wait times mean people may not be properly prepared to stand in line for so long
  • Behavioural science evidence could be used to improve the customer service experience, by:
    • improving physical cues, to encourage COVID-19 safe behaviours, and
    • using behavioural messages to motivate customers to return for their second vaccination dose on time.

Don’t Throw Away Your Shot

This week is World Immunization Week so we are sharing this fun image of Navy recruits receiving inoculations at the U.S. Naval Training Station in San Diego in the 1920s. If you are a military veteran, you probably remember this experience!

There are many resources available online to help people learn about vaccines. The World Health Organization (WHO) website about #WorldImmunizationWeek can be found here. For general information about vaccines and immunizations, please visit the Health and Human Services (HHS) website here.

COVID-19 VACCINATION TIMELINE:A recent report by the Economist’s Intelligence Unit (EIU) shows

COVID-19 VACCINATION TIMELINE:

A recent report by the Economist’s Intelligence Unit (EIU) shows that for many regions, it will take years before most of the adult population receives the vaccine for COVID-19. This map depicts the global timeline for majority populations to be vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus.

Most major economies in Latin America are expected to achieve widespread coverage by mid-2022, while most countries in Asia are expected to take until the end of next year to achieve the feat. Even in the region’s advanced economies, vaccinations are starting up slower than elsewhere. Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam will start their campaigns in late February and are expected to arrive at majority immunization by mid-2022.

Only Asia’s city states and Taiwan are expected to have vaccinated 60-70% of their adult populations by the end of 2021. According to the EIU, most European nations as well as the U.S., Israel, and the Gulf states are on this trajectory as well, although problems with supplies and distribution of the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines could cause delays. In many of the world’s developing nations, including many in Africa, the vaccination timeline is expected to extend into 2023.

TIL that airplane pilots would announce that Jonas Salk was on board and passengers would burst into applause. Hotels routinely would upgrade him into their penthouse suites.

viareddit.com

For those who don’t know and don’t want to click thru to find out: Jonas Salk is the reason we in North America no longer live in terror of polio. He also refused to patent or profit from his vaccine. He also spent the last years of his life researching a vaccine for AIDS, long before that was cool and back when a lot of people were secretly hoping it really would just kill all the gays. So you’re damn right people applauded and gave free upgrades.

Reblogging again because this time I did click through, and because of the times in which we live: Jonas Salk was Jewish, and the child of immigrants.

Never heard of him. Never will hear any thing more about him now. #getvaccinated #getvaxxed #saveliv

A PSA for anyone getting the Covid vaccine, just so you know what to expect, some people experience no side effects, but it’s also not uncommon for people to feel like they have cold/flu-like symptoms for a day or two after getting the vaccine. For most people the symptoms are slightly worse after the second shot. The hospital I work at is recommending that employees get the vaccine the day before they have a day or two off. They have provided some extra PTO days in part because of this. I took a day off after each shot and was glad I did. This should not discourage anyone from getting the vaccine, but is just information to keep in mind when scheduling you or your loved ones vaccines. I highly recommend OTC pain relievers like Tylenol, Advil, or their generics. Tylenol relieved all of my symptoms. There’s no prize for toughing it out, just take them and they will make it so much easier.

For me, I got my first shot in the morning and about 14 hours later I started to feel muscle aches and pains, especially in my neck. I went to bed and then woke up feeling worse; headache, lightheadedness, a temp of 99.2 (higher than normal, but not technically a fever), and worse muscle aches and pains. I started taking Tylenol and I felt much better. The symptoms lasted for about 24 hrs. After my second shot, I felt symptoms much faster, about 6 hrs after the shot, I kept up with the Tylenol a little more aggressively this time and it kept the symptoms at bay, still wouldn’t have wanted to run a 5k or give a big work presentation or anything. Over all I would say the symptoms last about 36 hrs.

And I feel like I have to put this in here, just in case it crosses people’s minds, “What’s the point of getting the vaccine if it’s just going to make you sick?” You may feel sick, but you are not infected. You feel sick because the vaccine has “tricked” your immune system into thinking you are infected so that it starts to produce antibodies, but you are not actually infected. The symptoms from the vaccine last a day or two. In contrast Covid can last for weeks or months. The symptoms from the vaccine will not land you in the hospital or, more importantly, the morgue like Covid can. Also, you won’t be able to transmit the virus or the symptoms to anyone around you.

Hopefully being informed can lead to us all making smart choices that help us get out of this pandemic as soon as possible.

I think we all know at least a few people who need to hear this perspective

This is basically exactly what happened to my wife after her second shot. It’s normal, it’s fine, get your shots anyway!

FYI it is literally impossible for the vaccines to infect you with covid. The vaccine has no viral particles in it, only mRNA. The types of vaccines that have a risk (usually negligibly small risk for the ones that make it to market) are made of viral particles that have been rendered harmless. This vaccine is not one of those vaccines. There is no covid virus, dead or otherwise, in the vaccine. The reactions described above are just your immune system figuring out how to make antibodies that will kill covid.

Brazil’s Yellow Fever Vaccinations Need Boosting

Map of Brazil showing where yellow fever vaccination is recommended.ALT

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Region of the Americas recently reported that Brazil’s ongoing yellow fever virus battle shows unfortunate results.

In Brazil, between July 2021 and week# 18 of 2022, there were 547 suspected cases of yellow fever in humans were reported, of which four were laboratory-confirmed and fatal.

The fatal cases were men between 20 and 29 years of age with no history of yellow fever vaccination.

The PAHO says the COVID-19 pandemic cause a significant disruption in yellow fever vaccination in Brazil.
