Well, that isn’t entirely true. It’s a direction I’ve been going for awhile but haven’t fully verbalized it entirely. I’ve mention that I’ve stuck to keeping things realistic, only retouching things that are temporary (bruises, pimples, cuts, scrapes etc. And even sometimes I leave those in). With that you have obviously noticed many of the models I work with show off their scars and their stretch marks; That I’m not smoothing out folds or rolls or cellulite.
I’ve mentioned this, but never the why. The why is pretty simple; I consider myself a feminist; equal rights, opportunities and treatment for the genders. I get to some they think that word equals hate for men, or that it’s a bad word. If you believe it’s not about purely treating women with respect, than my work isn’t for you to be honest. From my experience anyone who argues as such generally has very misogynistic views and beliefs they don’t realize they have. I’m usually against the idea of when people say “unfollow me if you don’t like it” because I much more prefer people to follow so they can continue to be educated so I won’t say that. But also know I have no issue with people leaving because of me stating that as well.
So with that negativeness out the way (and for those still reading) I continue on with my why.
One of the things I found I have an issue is with the inherent pressure society puts on women to fit a certain standard. Whether it’s grooming, or body shape, or dress, being flawless, etc.
What’s even more upsetting is there isn’t even one standard anymore. Women are basically screwed either way. If they are curvy, they need to lose weight. If they are skinny, people tell them to eat a burger. Women get pressured to have large breasts, but then also get shamed for getting breast implants. Women get shamed for wearing makeup or not wearing enough make up. And there are many many many more examples of these types of things.
Further is the issue or the belief (a lot of times subconsciously, as in people don’t actively realize they think this way) that women only make these decisions, whether to wear make up or not, how they dress, whether they post provocative images, strictly for attention of men or to attract males. While some women DO do this, vast majority do it for themselves and could care less about what random men or other strangers think of their decisions. Yet they continue to get inundated with strangers telling them what to do with their bodies or their lives.
Heck, even myself when I post photos, I can’t tell you the amount of times people have said I should “tell that girl to shave her bush” or “tell her she needs to lose weight/eat a burger/ etc”
That being said, you will start to see me further shooting these ideals, being more body positive, with different types of women of all shapes, sizes, colors, etc. You will see more women, along with the others I usually work with, who are mothers and show the signs of it; women who choose not to shave their legs or underarms; women who are curvier by traditional standards. This is something I want to normalize. I’ve gotten a lot of positive responses from women who have seen my work and say they feel more confident about themselves when they see a women with stretch marks looking beautiful, or someone who has a bit extra weight owning it in my photos. Even many of the models themselves (many of whom have no ambitions to model) have gone away from shoots feeling more confidence about themselves. This makes me happier than shooting images purely to be sexy images.
I’ve been doing this awhile, but this is more of a formal declaration of my direction, and my purpose. To empower women and help them embrace their perceived “flaws”, and see that these “flaws” have beauty with in them as well :)
I really hope my fans and followers support these ideals and believe in them as well :)
