The result of this interdisciplinary groups’ work is this thorough and unique report on the Sweden Democrats voters, who they are, where they come from, and where they are headed. It was first presented in Swedish in the summer of 2018 just before the Swedish Parliamentary Elections. I’m very happy that it is now available for an international audience since the results are of general interest when one tries to understand the global trend of the rise of radical right wing political parties. The rich data set makes it possible to analyse and understand the values and motivations of voters supporting such parties in an unusually detailed way and it is my hope that this report will inspire similar studies in other countries…
The Sweden Democrats have attracted voters from both the right and the left, primarily from the Conservative Party (Moderaterna) and the Social Democrats, as well as from groups who were previously non-voters (SCB, 2016; Valforskningsprogrammet, 2018). Thus, the backgrounds of Sweden Democrat voters vary, and it is not entirely clear what they have in common. This report poses a number of different questions: How – and to what extent – do Sweden Democrat voters differ from those who vote for other parties? Why have they moved away from the parties they previously voted for, and is it likely that they will return to them? What political opinions do they hold, besides being critical of immigration? Is their view of immigration driven by a concern over societal change or is it a manifestation of a more deep-rooted antipathy towards immigrants? And finally, to what extent are there differences within the group of Sweden Democrat voters, i.e. how homogenous a group are they?
English version of one report I ran across, and just started wading into. Which looked interesting enough to share, particularly as this might extend to the continuing growth of the far right elsewhere.
(Maybe extra interesting to me in the particulars, since I understand from elsewhere that we’ve just moved into SD’s regional stronghold of support. Skåne in general, apparently, more than the city of Malmö itself.)
Yesterday I had the displeasure of photographing the neo-nazi ‘White Man March’ in Newcastle. The rise in far right fascists is concerning, but thankfully their numbers were low, with most coming over from Italy and Poland, to spout their hate filled rhetoric to a very small crowd. #racists
To closeted lgbtq+ teens and children living in far right, conservative christian, and/or conspiratorial and hateful homes. Know that you are valid and that everything will eventually turn out ok in the end. Know that you’re not alone and I hope you can take care of yourself and have a wonderful day.

As we celebrate this day of American Independence, let’s take a moment to remember the very first man who died for what-would-become-the-United-States.
His name was Crispus Attucks.
His father was a Black slave and his mother was from the Natick tribe. Crispus ran away from his childhood plantation. He became a respected sailor in New England. Whilst in Boston in 1770, a dispute with redcoats led to them opening fire on Crispus and then several others. This incident became known as “The Boston Massacre”, which, you’ll recall, jump-started the American Revolution.
As Black people are shot in the streets(andchurches) on a daily basis, as Native tribes are further displaced, and as White people desperately cling to a symbol of bigotry, let’s take a moment to remember when the death of a Black man and Native American inspired this country to change for the better.

Bystander footage showing a Sacramento, California, police officer slamming Nandi Cain Jr. — a black man — to the ground and punching him repeatedly in the face during a jaywalking stop on Monday has prompted an internal investigation, the Sacramento Police Department said in a statement.
“The actions of the involved Sacramento police officer are disturbing and [do] not appear to be reasonable based upon the circumstances,” the statement read. “The Sacramento Police Department holds itself to the highest professional standard and the actions that were observed are not indicative of the dedicated women and men who work for the department.”

This trend is in stark contrast to data showing that the Republican Party is further away from the political center than the Democratic Party, leaving viewers misinformed about each party’s position by lending undue credibility to the right-wing talking point that Democrats are extreme.
