One thing that A Series of Unfortunate Events does really well is that it establishes very early on to a quite young audience that sometimes people don’t mean it personally when they hurt you, but that doesn’t excuse their behavior.
Take Mr. Poe for instance: in every single encounter the Baudelaire orphans have with him, he messes everything up. He consistently puts the children in dangerous situations just because it’s convenient for him, he never listens to what the children actually have to say, and he refuses to be held accountable for his own mistakes, thereby dooming himself to make them over and over again.
If you divide it up evenly, Mr. Poe is just as responsible for the children’s ill fate as Count Olaf because for every single book in which he’s involved, and up through The Carnivorous Carnival in the Netflix series, he is capable of righting the situation and saving the children and he still decides to save his own behind rather than helping the children who are in dire need of an adult figure they can trust. Desmond Tutu famously said that “if you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor”.
And yet, Handler draws a distinctive line between Mr. Poe and Count Olaf in the series because one truly is worse than the other. Mr. Poe doesn’t mean to harm the children, and genuinely does care about their wellbeing, even if he is awful at doing so. He is always appalled when Count Olaf is actually revealed at the end and he does want the children to be safe. Count Olaf on the other hand actually hates the children and means to cause them harm.
The series draws the same distinction between Charles and Sir in that regard and Jerome and Esme, as well. It makes the point that people hurt each other and do harm in the world for all sorts of reasons and very rarely is it personal - that we shouldn’t take it personally when people are bad because adults are fallible too and sometimes they make mistakes without thinking. But even more so, the series makes the point that unintentionality does not excuse the harm that they do. Just because someone doesn’t hate you and that someone didn’t mean to harm you doesn’t mean you are obligated to forgive them or be understanding of their position. So often in this world people make excuses for their behavior, saying they didn’t mean to do something or they didn’t understand the effect it would have or they just weren’t listening and we’re expected to accept their apology and move on because we’re told intent means everything.
But the thing is, intent isn’t everything. Intent is only half the battle and our actions always have consequences, regardless of whether we like those consequences or not. Ignorance is not an excuse for inaction because it is our responsibility in the world as citizens of the world to be conscious of the effect our choices could have on others. The Baudelaire orphans never forgive Mr. Poe, and in The Penultimate Peril when Mr. Poe approaches them and offers them help and offers to take them to their next home, they refuse his help and their refuse his apology because his intentions in that instance don’t matter because he created great harm in the world and just because he didn’t foresee it doesn’t mean that he couldn’t have. This follows the same vein as excusing someone’s behavior because it was rooted in deep trauma or mental illness or justified revenge - the reason why someone did something wrong doesn’t matter, they still did something wrong and they need to face up to their crimes.
It was an important message then, but I think it’s an even more important one now in the political climate that we live in. There are so many people in this world right now who want to cause harm: neo-Nazis, the alt-right, homophobes, transphobes, racists, sexists, and we have an administration that actively takes delight in causing harm to oppressed people as long as it stands to benefit them in some financial way. They know they are hurting people and they continue to do so anyways so long as it makes them more comfortable. These are the Count Olafs of the world.
But then there are the ignorant people that support Trump and his administration, that do racist things like calling the cops on black people just because they look “suspicious”, or use their religion as an excuse to justify discrimination, and simply regurgitate everything they’ve been told by others just as ignorant as them about the way the world ought to work, and those are the people who pave the way for the Count Olafs of the world. It is easier to excuse their bad behavior because they really don’t mean for what they do to cause harm - most of the time they genuinely think they’re doing the right thing - but their actions have just as big of consequences as the actions of the Count Olafs. The children never would have ended up in Count Olaf’s clutches time and time again if Mr. Poe hadn’t put them there. The Count Olafs are worse, and it’s important to recognize the difference between intended harm and unintended harm, but we have to hold the Mr. Poes of the world accountable too, because ignorance is just as much a choice as malice.

Train seats on one side of the subway car feature the stylized fascist version of the Reichsadler (Imperial Eagle) with the swastika replaced by an Iron Cross. On the other side, the Rising Sun Flag, often associated with Japanese WWII forces. It’s all for a TV show.

Yeah I get really suspicious of anyone whose username has 88 in it, which must really suck for people born in 1988.

H is the 8th letter of the alphabet, so 88 stands for HH which stands for Heil Hitler. It’s fucking inane but yeah. Yes, this is real (link to tweet). Yes, Tucker Carlson is literally repeating Nazi propaganda that aided the genocide of the Romani during the Holocaust. Yes, I am furious.
(Also, although there is a large population of Romani in Romania, they aren’t indigenous to Romania. They’re a diasporic group originally from northern India.)
Romani and Jewish have been screaming at the top of their lungs for years about neo-fascism in Europe, and Americans were totally aloof.
Then neo-fascism reared its head in America, but Roma and Jews were left out of the conversation in terms of people being impacted, because our oppression was “over.”

Maybe we hear things about White extremism being removed from the Countering Violent Extremism focus, and I think that that’s a mistake.
From dozens of Jewish community centers receiving bomb threatstocemeteries and synagogues being desecrated to police officers in Las Vegas being targeted - specifically because they are law enforcement - by militiamen; we have a domestic terrorism issue that we hardly talk about because we’re so focused on the threat coming from overseas.
When Dylann Roof writes a manifesto proclaiming his hate for people and saying that he wants to murder people to progress his agenda - that, to me, is terrorism. That’s no different than an ISIS propaganda video.
The imagery of White Supremacy has changed over the last three decades. It’s gone from what-you-would-consider-your-normal-racist to something that’s more mainstream: suits and ties; fashionable haircuts; and clothes that would never identify them as Neo-Nazis until they open their mouths. And ‘Make America Great Again’? Well, to them, that means ‘Make America WHITE Again’.
White nationalists, just like any other extremist group, promise paradise. They promise that the problems of crime and the problems of ‘White genocide’ are gonna go away. And that ‘You come from a very White, noble cause’. And that ‘your culture is worth protecting’. The problem is that nobody is trying to take that away from you.
The only problems that they have are the ones that they inflate with propaganda - with fake news - where they teach you that ‘Blacks commit more crimes against White people’ or that ‘the Jews control the media and finance system’. These are all conspiracy theories; there’s no basis in truth.
And I know this because I helped create those lies from the very beginning, and I helped spread them, and ultimately I believed them myself. And I infected that lie into other people that were innocent.
And even 20 years later, after I left the movement, I’m still pulling up the weeds from all those seeds of hate that I planted. Which is why I’ve dedicated the last 20 years of my life to help eradicate racism.”

This isn’t because Burger King is nicer in Denmark. It’s the law, and the US is actually the only so-called “developed” country that doesn’t mandate jobs provide a minimum amount of paid vacation, sick leave, or both.

It is the same in Sweden. It is so funny every time an american company opens up offices here and then tries to do it the american way and all the unions go “I don’t think so”.
Like when Toys ‘r Us opened in sweden 1995.
They refused to sign on to the union deals that govern such things as pay/pension and vacation in Sweden. Most of our rights are not mandated by law (we don’t have a minimum wage for example) but are made in voluntary agreements between the unions and the companies.
But they refused, saying that they had never negotiated with any unions anywhere else in the world and weren’t planning to do it in Sweden either.
Of course a lot of people thought it was useless fighting against an international giant, but Handels (the store worker’s union) said that they could not budge, because that might mean that the whole Swedish model might crumble. So they went on strike in the three stores that the company had opened so far.
Cue a shitstorm from the press, and from right wing politicians. But the members were all for it, and other unions started doing sympathy actions. The teamsters refused to deliver goods to their stores, the financial unions blockaded all economical transactions regarding Toys ‘r Us and the strike got strong international support as well, especially in the US.
In the end, Toys ‘r Us caved in, signed the union deal, and thus their employees got the same treatment as Swedish store workers everywhere.
The right to be treated as bloody human beings and not disposable cogs in a machine.
and that story right there? is exactly why Republicans in the US work so hard to bust unions. it’s because unionizing WORKS and they’re terrified of workers actually having some power.

With the recent events in Charlottesville fresh in our minds, Nazis and racist extremists seem to be on the rise. We wanted to share something from our collection as a reminder that these groups have unfortunately been around for a long time.
In 1983, the National Education Association produced a report titled Extremism in the United States. It opens by mentioning the ‘marked increase’ in visibility of extremist movements in the early 1980s. The report is a good resource on those groups at the time, with news stories, in-depth studies, and statistics like those found below.
There have been scattered reports of gore submissions coming from Neo-Nazi and antisemitic addresses over the last few hours. In the high likelihood that this is a resurgence of the original attacks that prompted the original creation of this Operation, this Operation is standing by to give aid and assistance to those in need.
