LIVE

Studying on the sofa with this cutie is impossible.

8 years ago to the day that I interviewed and was accepted into medical school. 8 years!!!

So much is different and yet it’s the same. I’m not the person I was then- I had no idea what I was getting myself in to haha I suppose I still don’t.

I wish I could tell myself no to worry so much- that in the end everything ends up okay.

Time is a crazy thing!!!

Guys!!! It’s here!!!!!

Drove 10+ hours to hear all about this and I feel like a new Harry Potter book came out!

Hands down the best conference I’ve ever been at. To be in the room debating the current standards with the people who wrote them was fantastic!!!

Has anyone ever acquired torsades de pointes by drinking too much tonic water???

There’s no studies on it that I could find and inquiring minds want to know.

So I was wandering through the depths of tumblr and stumbled across this post and oh my god guess who knows the answer to this ancient question

Had a patient with malaria recently and there was no quinine to be had in my city so out of curiosity I calculated the dose in tonic water:

  • In the US, quinine in tonic water is limited to 83mg/liter, and since the dose per the CDC is 650mg PO TID, the patient would have needed to drink 7.8 liters of tonic water 3 times daily.

If a patient who was drinking a lot of modern tonic water developed torsades, I’d recommend evaluating for hypomagnesia and hypokalemia due to volume status before looking at the quinine as the cause.

I realize that you’re a lot further in your career now and you already realize this about tonic water. I just got excited that I could answer this random drug question from your student era.

Sometimes it feels like there’s too much random trivia in the brain and you’ve gotta let it leak out, which is why we’re on tumblr.

And this is why I give up an call pharmacy half the time when it comes to the crazy stuff. Because you guys always have a way of knowing how much of something is in something else and viola! Magic!

I haven’t thought about this in ages!!! Thanks for the info!!! =-)

Had a patient on service for 36 days. For three weeks he had been 90% fiO2 on vapotherm 35 LPM. THREE WEEKS. We tried everything short of intubating him to fix his lungs. Family didn’t want to intubate or CPR if it came to it. They didn’t want hospice either and except for being encephalopathic and on way too much oxygen and being unable to get out of bed he looked okay.

The family kept telling us that what when G-d wants him, he’ll take him.

We decided a week ago to try and get him to a long term acute rehab hospital. Family couldn’t decide. Keep in mind there was literally nothing more we could do and despite crazy high oxygen nothing had changed in weeks. Today we spent 45 minutes on the phone with the family and got them to agree to the transfer.

An hour later the patient became brady and died. The whole ICU was shocked.

I’m convinced G-d has a sick sense of humor.

My day today.

So I lied clinic is not goint to be chill this go around.

I checked my messages first thing and found 70+ patient calls and refill requests because our office staff decided that my patients weren’t important last week and no one refilled anything or called anyone back. Then they realize they made a mistake with the schedule and put a fellow resident down as working when he is not. So I was gifted all of his patients as well as my own to see today.

Any chance of post vacation happiness has been murdered by the clinic office staff.

Scuba Steve: Where do you go to school?

Me: Oh I’m long done with school.

Steve: Okay so where did you go to school.

Me: I did undergrad in *state name* and graduate school in Poland.

Steve: Cool what’s you degree in?

Me:Medicine

Steve: What do you do with that?

Me: Well I’m a doctor.

Steve: Wait, what…no way, how old are you?!?!?

The one time I slipped and told someone the truth about what I do- they don’t believe me anyways!!!

Finally a week of vacation for my burnt out soul.

I keep thinking about patients. Can’t turn off and now just stood next to a man that looks exactly like a man who died last week.

So rules for the week: no studying, no medical/healthcare related questions, no answering emails or texts from work, no class whatsapp group, no research project, and if anyone asks I work in banking.

Now I’m gonna read my book and wait for this plane to get me out of here!

Just ran in to a hospitalist who is also an alumni of my school but from the Polish program. It made my heart so happy to talk about the place I miss so much with someone who misses it as much as I do!

My favorite night spent in the ER as a med student I put almost 70 sutures into a guys hand who decided he’d try to blow it off with a firework.

I had put in about 4 sutures prior to that.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO BLOW YOURSELVES UP THIS EVENING.

Otherwise, you will be helping to teach some other overly excited medical student learn how to suture.

Consider yourself warned.

The 2nd year on cardiology claimed a call room for himself- with a message.

Presenter (speaking to current interns): It’s good to review all of this. You guys are going to be alone next month, no ones going to help you.

My Program Director: That’s not entirely true… we might give you a medical student.

(July is coming kids).

Artist in Residence Commission / Fort Worth, Texas (2019 - 2022)

From November 2019 onwards I shall begin an interdisciplinary residency with The Art Galleries at TCU in Fort Worth, Texas, working in conjunction with the Institute for Environmental Studies:

‘It’s main purpose is facilitating faculty collaboration on interdisciplinary projects outside home departments. Simply put, the Institute, which was founded in 2003, defines and solves environmentally related problems through education and research. And they do this by partnering with environmental nonprofits, law firms, government agencies and businesses, bringing current issues into the classroom’ Professor Becky Johnson says ‘… that the Institute breaks down the silo-effect allowing faculty to work outside their departments.’

The residency will explore concepts related to ‘Eco Grief’ & ‘Climate Anxiety’ within an extraction-rich geographical environment.

The project will run from 2019 to 2022 and will culminate in an exhibition.

Curator: Sara-Jayne Parsons // Director, The Art Galleries at TCU Art, Fort Worth Contemporary Arts

Please consider supporting thee Santoro School for Comics Book Makers drive to build the Comics Workbook Rowhouse Residency. Come live and work in Pittsburgh PA . CHECK OUT THE AUCTION OF RARE COMICS HERE.

I scored some rare minis and a sammyharkham original through Frank’s auction! Sammy’s comic Poor Sailor first convinced me of the power of this medium and I’m so excited to have an original from him! You, too, could glimpse into the minds of your comics heroes through some of the items that Frank is auctioning off.

I have tapped out my resources but you could win some awesome stuff AND support a very interesting future opportunity for furthering the comic arts.

TEMPORARY GRADUATE VISA UPDATE OCTOBER 2019

Well guys, this is it.  We are finally (almost) there.

We submitted the application for his Temporary Graduate Visa in August, and have been waiting for approval.

A few weeks ago we were assigned a case officer (CO), who requested additional documentation that we couldn’t provide at the time of application (his Skills Assessment).  We were given a month to provide the assessment, otherwise an decision would be made.  We were freaking out because we were still waiting on TRA to approve his Skills Assessment.

Well, within a matter of 2 days, they came through and gave him a positive Skills Assessment, and we sent it off.  We are now playing the final waiting game.  I can’t wait for this be over!

JUST HIT 25,000 FOLLOWERS!!! I love each and every one of you. I’m sorry I don’t post as much on her

My very first mural and hopefully not my last as it was so much fun to do! Painted in Heraklion, Cre

My very first mural and hopefully not my last as it was so much fun to do! Painted in Heraklion, Crete as part of the Lakkos project, an initiative to upgrade Heraklion’s previously most neglected area with a fascinating history.
Using the existing textures and patterns in the wall as a starting point, the design in based on sketches I made at the beach, trying to capture the different patterns in the sea water

If you happen to be in Heraklion and you want to have a closer look, my mural is based just around the corner of the new cultural centre and makes an excellent selfie backdrop So happy to have been part of this project and leave my mark on the wonderful island of Crete.

So, I learned in my sleep study class that the reason doctors and med students and nurses and such work insanely long shifts is because of this one doctor, Dr. Halsted.  He worked insanely long hours, days at a time, with all the energy in the world.  He instilled that people must live and breathe the hospital they worked.  The reason med students/ inters take ‘REISENCY’ is because he believed they should practically LIVE at the hospital.  Even with the effects of sleep denervation clearly showing that 18 hours sleepiness impairs you the same amount as being legally drunk and an all nighter can literally stop you from retaining information (which in a HOSPITAL, things like this fucking MATTER), they still continue this practice.  People are like, 'He was a good doctor!  We must emulate him!  Sleep is for the weak and despite being doctors and knowing the impact of sleep denervation (literally brain rot and cancer being some of the worst cases) we must suffer this blow to our health to be like this great man!’

Dr. Halsted as a cocaine addict.
