mythologyofthepoetandthemuse:

“Persephone”, “Hermes” by Vera Bousiou. A modern dialogue between the two gods that were often associated with matters of the soul. The two figures were drawn in a spontaneous way, emerging straight from the unconscious mind, the mystical cave or gate of imagination and creativity. Persephone, the fruitful and the uncanny, standing for the primordial female, all embracing, element, while Hermes representing the analytical, spiritual processes, the “animus” of the artist.

Limestone statue of a bearded man wearing a wreath and carrying votive offerings. Artist unknown; ca. 475-450 BCE. From Cyprus; now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

I just had a deep deep session yesterday with Zeus. Read a few hymns for him, said some prayers and gave him my true and deep thanks for everything that he does for me in my life. I nearly cried at the deep presence of Zeus as I praised him. At the end of my prayers I sat there, my gentle hand caressing the smooth bronze of my Zeus statue, thanking him for being there for me when no one else was, for the path he has shown me, for the guidance he continues to bring to me. Thanking him for the joy and calmness, the storms that kept me and continue to keep me safe and for the blessings he continues to bring upon me when I need them most.

Zeus truly is a kind loving God full of goodness and mightyness. A God that watches over this world with a kind heart and wise mind of law, order and truth.

Feeling his loving presence is something I will forever be grateful for.

So as I’ve moved more into reconstructionist Ancient Greek religion and devoted my time to more religious study rather than occultism and Ancient Greek magic, I’ve compiled quite the collection of literature. As I continue down this path, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in me compiling a syllabus of sorts for general learning about Ancient Greek (specifically Athenian) religion? So rather than just a recommended reading list, I’d attempt to provide a structure and commentary on the books. It’d start with historical sources and move into academia divided into different sections based on their subject matter, and then ultimately conclude with criticisms/expansions of the academic and literary canon from anti-racist, decolonial, and feminist perspectives. Let me know if this is something y’all would be interested in rather than just a general recommended reading list on Ancient Greek religion!

mythologyofthepoetandthemuse:

In the worship of Dionysus, his female followers lived with each other while the male presence was prohibited. These women represented the goddesses who had been united with the gods. The concept of ‘sacred fury’ characterized Maenads, who were also known as Bacchae. Blatant meant angry and not insane in the case of Maenads. Maenads were running wearing long dresses while they were carrying thyrsus, a reed wrapped with ivy or vine leaves, they were also wearing ivy leaves on their heads. Flutes and drums accompanied the  ecstatic and wild Maenads as they were dancing to honour their lord, Dionysus. Dionysus, a god of nature and of the deep forests, like the celtic Cernunnos, orgiastic and rejuvenating.

After a night of revelry on the slopes of Mt. Parnassus, exhausted Maenads collapse in the mountain town of Amphissa, where the local women take care of them. Painting by Lawrence Alma-Tadema,1887.

mythologyofthepoetandthemuse:

Goddess Hecate is being perceived nowadays as primary a goddess of magic with apotropaic characteristics, still the ancient sources reveal an original different image of the goddess. In the greek antiquity she was the revered Kore, the companion of Persephone and Demeter, the only one along with the all seeing Helios (the sun) to witness the abduction of Persephone from Hades, in the field where the girls gathered flowers, Persephone was swallowed by the earth…It was Hecate that informed mother Demeter of the abduction of Persephone. In the artifacts depicting the eleusinian worship, Hecate is present, constant company of the holy duet of the mysteries. Also in Samothrace, the two elemental dwarfs, those Great Gods, tiny and enormous at the same time, Cabiri, devoted their sacred mysteries to no other deities than Demeter, Persephone and Hecate, perhaps the three aspects of the moon, the three ages of the woman, as the mountain Saos (the moon) protected the mystics during their initiation and rituals.

mythologyofthepoetandthemuse:

The relationship and correlation between the deities of Hermes and Eros is a very strong one. Both deities get to maintain their primordial and rather unlimited character throughout the ages, the archetype of the “divine child” is one associated with both of these deities, while playfulness and a certain vibe of mystery permeates their nature. Hermes is deeply connected with the life force that is libido, his presence is shown in antiquity simply with upright pieces of wood or stone resembling the phallus, these pieces were called “hermes”. The name of Eros is intertwined with its significance, Eros possible means “demanding love”, indicating the urgency of the phenomenon. Both Hermes and Eros are complicated in their understanding or even acquaintance, their nature is confusing and delicate, it’s as if the universe gets knows a specific frequency, a melody concerning the eternal relationship of love, thievery and idyls. The male key of this melody is Hermes and the female key is Aphrodite, mother of Eros, when these powers become unified Hermaphroditus occurs.

Eros flying above the sea and holding a flower (love gift). Tondo of an Attic red-figure kylix by Kachrylion(potter), ca. 510–500 B.C. Archaeological Museum of Florence.
