Marcia Fudge, the secretary of Housing and Urban Development, recently bragged on Twitter that 'the United States is the only major economy in the world where the economy as a whole is stronger now than before the pandemic’.
"But whose economy?
"Google has provided its highest paid employees, who were already working remotely, with a $1,000 device so they can also perform rapid Covid tests at home. Meanwhile, shift workers must spend hours waiting to be tested for the virus they are much more likely to have been exposed to.
"As the ruling class has worked safely from home, having goods delivered by human shields, their wealth has increased because they are extracting value from the viral underclass, who are paying with their time on lines, their pathogenic work, and, sometimes, their very lives.”
Following months of speculation about the administration’s plans, Interior Secretary Deb Haaland said Thursday that the department will propose a new five-year schedule of lease sales for offshore oil and gas drilling by June 30, when the current program expires, our colleague Anna Phillips reports.
Haaland made the announcement at the start of a Senate budget hearing where Republican lawmakers and Sen. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.) angrily criticized the Biden administration’s energy policies and pressured the secretary to increase drilling both on land and in federal waters. They expressed doubt that the administration’s new five-year plan would call for any new oil and gas lease sales.
For their part, many climate advocates hope it won’t. New offshore lease sales could represent a 20-year investment in future fossil fuel development at a time when climate scientists are saying the world needs to rapidly transition to cleaner sources of energy.
Questioned about whether Interior intends to hold offshore lease sales, Haaland said the department is still working on its proposal. The earliest it could be finalized is Nov. 30, but it has historically taken the government six months to a year to finalize a new offshore drilling plan.
“The previous Administration stopped work on the new five-year plan in 2018, so there has been a lot to do to catch up. Varying, conflicting litigation has also been a factor,” Haaland said. “We take this responsibility seriously and are not prejudging an outcome.”

President Joe Biden just signed “an executive order to supercharge our administration’s ambitious plan to confront the existential threat of climate change.”
He is pledging a million new jobs in the US automobile industry which will be generated by the federal government switching its entire fleet to electric vehicles.
This all is amazing but he then stated again that he will not ban fracking…
Switching to electric cars is great if your (or in this case the government’s) cars are old and need to be changed anyways. It’s also important that the energy they run on doesn’t come from non-renewable sources.
Is this move doing more harm than good by replacing functional vehicles with new electric cars? This executive order seems at best symbolic and at worst damaging.
It’s amazing that he tries to tackle climate change (unlike Trump who refused to acknowledge its existence), but if he truly wants to help he must do it in an effective way that goes beyond his public image.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is now accepting applications for the first-ever SAMHSA Harm Reduction grant program and expects to issue $30 million in grant awards. This funding, authorized by the American Rescue Plan, will help increase access to a range of community harm reduction services and support harm reduction service providers as they work to help prevent overdose deaths and reduce health risks often associated with drug use.
The purpose of the program is to support community-based overdose prevention programs, syringe services programs, and other harm reduction services. Funding will be used to enhance overdose and other types of prevention activities to help control the spread of infectious diseases and the consequences of such diseases for individuals with, or at risk of developing substance use disorders (SUD), support distribution of FDA-approved overdose reversal medication to individuals at risk of overdoes, build connections for individuals at risk for, or with, a SUD to overdose education, counseling, and health education, refer individuals to treatment for infectious diseases such as HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and viral hepatitis, and encourage such individuals to take steps to reduce the negative personal and public health impacts of substance us or misuse.
