I am excited to participate in the Bird Whisperer Project for the first time this month! For those of you just tuning in, we all do a piece of art inspired by the same reference photo.
This month’s bird is the Whiskey Jay. I was so inspired by all the beautiful greys in the bird’s feathers that I decided this was the perfect opportunity to do a winter landscape for the holidays.

The Silvery-Breasted Tanager (Tangara velia cyanomelas) is the final addition to the ongoing AVE (Avian Vector Encyclopedia) project, pending new discoveries, splits, and corrections. Fittingly, it is not accorded full species status by some authorities, underscoring the taxonomic complexity I’ve encountered during the project. This is the #Kea a huge alpine parrot, super smart and cars #1 nemesis. I cherish them because a bunch of them showed up while I was enjoying snow for the first time close to #milfordsound in the #SouthIsland. This took almost 3 hours :)

Bioluminescence - Question, Hypothesis, Experiment

Here’s the painting that was in the Forbes article last week! It’s part of a seven person group show at Rehs Contemporary next month in NYC.
The light of life and the natural world. Of all the vastness of space, as of yet, we know of only one planet that supports life. At least within some great distance from here, life is rare. Each organism being the exquisite and detailed product of billions of years of evolution, life is precious. This point of light and inspiration stands in contrast to the lanterns and lights that are historically thought to be sources of illumination but are now dimmed; mythologies and superstitions humans have created as we struggled in the dark of ignorance to understand our world. But the process of science has revealed a luminous, living planet, more intricate and amazing than we could have ever imagined. Let us embrace the light of life in everyone, kindled over billions of years, and combine our efforts to light a brilliant future.

“Rousing the Trees”
Yellow Warbler

This painting is part of Operation Gaia, under the Early Birds theme. A sweet yellow warbler sings his early spring song, as the trees wake from their winter slumber.
This painting will be auctioned in February (will link when it’s live!), along with many other amazing artworks from many artists, with all proceeds to benefit the National Audubon Society. Now in its second year, last year artists raised over $4,000 to help our avian friends. Help us help birds! If you’d like to create art for Operation Gaia, see my previous reblog for more info.

I found an old brush pen that @vantid gave me last Monday and it seemed like a sign that I should try my first Inktober. I had never used the brushpen (nor, indeed, done inktober) before, out of fear (fear of ruining art supplies, fear of sharing). Well, the bush pen was given to me 10 years ago, and the ages have made the brushpen kinda cranky and crusty and it’s much different than the precise micron-type ink pens I’m used to, so it’s been a good way to make myself experiment a bit.
