It’s been over a year and a half since I last surveyed nonbinary people to get a general idea of preferences when it comes to language to describe us. In that time nonbinary genders have become more well-known in the media in the UK and the US. It can’t hurt to get a fresher picture, can it?

This time I’ll attempt to improve on the last survey by including some options that were missed out last time. As before, you will not be asked for your name, email address, specific location, legal gender, or gender assigned at birth.

Thank you,

Cassian

PS: Last time we got over 2,000 responses. That made the results really useful and valuable, and it’d be great if we could repeat that. If you would like to help these statistics be as complete as possible with minimal effort, please reblog this post and retweet this tweet.

PPS: I’d like to take this opportunity to note that this is just a Google Forms survey with no extra security. While no identifying information such as names and email addresses will be collected, I cannot be responsible for your privacy. If you have any concerns at all, please be cautious and do what you feel is necessary to be safe.

The GENDER Book second edition is in the works… and we need your help to make it happen!

Hi friends! With COVID-19 turning the world upside down, our illustrator has less work on his plate. The upside is that means more time to (finally!) go back and do some revisions on the GENDER book.

We’re looking to fix all those typos that have been bugging you, add more identities, and generally make the book the best it can be. After all, the world of gender has evolved some since the first edition came out in 2014!

So, if you’re willing, we’d love your sharp eyes and keen minds to help out with the editing process. Just bust out your copy (or grab a pay what you like ebook) and fill out this formwith anything you’d change. This is your chance to be heard! There’s even a spot if you want to be drawn into the next version of the GENDER book.

ONWARDS TO THE SURVEY!

Thanks for being awesome,
Hunter, Jay, and Robin

Don’t tag this bullshit as LGBT, this is not LGBT. You are NOT LGBT for being ‘‘nonbinary’‘, call yourself any shit, but you are not LGBT and don’t tell lies.

do you see that T in LGBT?

stop excluding agender and non-binary folk. cis people do a good enough of a job at that already.

Reblogging for the last thing.

Listen.

Not many people know that nonbinary, genderfluid, agender, etc. people are trans. That’s the white part of the flag, as stated in the final reblog above.

No one, and I mean NO ONE, has the right to exclude anyone when they fit the definition and attributes of being who they are. People who are neutral or undefined in gender have just as much of a right as ANYONE ELSE to be included, to be loved, to be validated by others. People don’t need to constantly be criticized for how they identify.

While I’m not one to blame cis people for anything, the reason why we (gender neutral people) are excluded is because PEOPLE DON’T UNDERSTAND IT ON A FUNDAMENTAL LEVEL. Explaining how one knows they’re nb or any other variety of trans is as difficult as explaining how one knows they’re a woman or a man. You don’t know how you know you’re one or the other, so HOW in the FUCK would one know that they’re genderless?

You can’t explain it. You just know who you are and how you feel inside. That’s all that’s there. It’s the same for literally EVERYONE.

You don’t fucking explain it and you can’t. Again, for one who is cis, explain how you know you’re male or female WITHOUT referring to biological configuration. It just can’t happen because you don’t know how. It’s the same with us.

Let’s just quit fighting about this stupid shit.

signed-me-again:

wanting to not have sex indefinitely is a reasonable boundary

wanting to not have sex ever is a reasonable boundary

wanting to not have sex after initially expressing an interest in sex is a reasonable boundary

wanting to not have sex is always a reasonable boundary

Tfw your family is so accepting of you they fucking create a new term to call you by so they don’t misgender you accidentally

wtf is it with the “nb people are transtrenders” bullshit? like. mate. I’m trans. I have dysphoria over the fact that, physically speaking, I am INCAPABLE of being androgynous because 1. tits, 2. hips/ass are too wide/big to have surgery correct them and for me to be androgynous, and 3. money, because even if I got surgery for my boobs I’d have to give up a damn leg too.

on top of that, wtf docs that do hysterectomies??? like “oh uwu u might change ur mind so nOPE”

bITCH I DON’T WANT A DAMN KID

I don’t even wanna fuck people let alone have a goddamn crotch goblin comin outta my parts and getting pulled into my family drama ffs

“u might change your mind” bULLSHITE

I just watched a clip of a Texas state senator, believing her mic was off, calling my friend and incredibly respected colleague a pervert, DURING his powerful testimony against the anti-trans bill which ultimately cleared the Texas Senate.

He has a PhD in psychology, is currently working on his MD, led the first efforts to evaluate the impact of testosterone on trans men’s mental health, is regarded within the APA as an expert on trans mental health, has worked in both clinical and advocacy roles for trans folks and youth in particular, and was testifying largely as an expert on the impact the bill would have on trans people’s medical and mental health.

He had already given evidence-based testimony arguing that this bill would lead to the deaths of trans youth. He was there representing the scientific communities that know the harm these bills can have, and he was standing up for the most vulnerable in the community.

After listening to all this, while he was speaking about the misinformation associated with the “protection” arguments of anti-trans bathroom bills, this Senator said OUT LOUD (albeit under her breath), “you’re the pervert” solely, one must assume, because he is openly transgender.

She unsurprisingly voted in support of the bill, which as I mentioned, ultimately passed the Texas Senate along party lines.

This has me angry and hurt. It is also in some ways laughable that anyone could think of Colt Keo-Meier (or me for that matter) as a pervert. That *that* is what was taken away from his powerful testimony that she must have chosen not to listen to. But it’s a reminder that we are up against more than just ignorance. There is vitriolic hate and rage toward trans people that, while related to ignorance, is far more dangerous because it shuts off one’s ability to listen and learn.

A lot of trans people are seeing the headlines (from liberal or trans media only, of course) about Dr. Keo-Meier being called a pervert. Some of them have and will listen to it, like I did. I have enough people in my life who see me and respect me to protect me from most of the negative impact of this, but many folks aren’t so lucky.

For those of us in pockets of trans-positivity and acceptance, it can seem silly to have to say things like “TRANS PEOPLE AREN’T PERVERTS” and “TRANS PEOPLE ARE NORMAL” or “TRANS RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS” but in all actuality, these are messages that need to be out there and loud.

Non-trans folks (aka cisgender people) need to examine what they think and feel about trans people. Have a real talking to yrself if the words freak, pervert, weirdo, or abnormal crop up. Expand yr understanding and divorce trans people from those biases in yr mind. Then get out and do it with the people around you. It isn’t always safe for us to challenge anti-trans biases or ignorance. We need yr help. And all the while, please flood yr social media and communities with messages of trans people’s worth and beauty. Volunteer in the community. Donate to trans orgs and trans people’s crowd funding. Look for art and writing and entertainment by trans people and support it and share it with non-trans folks.

Work harder to recognize, celebrate, and love us, because the people who hate us and think we are perverts are working very hard and getting pretty loud.

Thank you.

Queer Cis and Trans Straight Flags

Some of my friends have been expressing that they can’t make combo flags displaying the entirety of their identity due to the virtual absence of non-satirical cis and straight flags, so I decided to take a whack at it! Please note that straight people cannot use the Queer Cis flag and cis people cannot use the Trans Straight flag. These flags are for individuals who are still part of the LGBTQIA+ community in some way.

Queer Cis Flag

I noticed how the trans flag can visually describe trans women (blue stripe leading the eye down to a pink stripe = AMAB + feminine gender) and trans men (vice versa). I built the blue and pink stripes in this flag off that interpretation. In place of the nonbinary white stripe, a thin, dark blue-violet stripe references the historical association between the color purple and queerness.

Trans Straight Flag

The most utilized visual representation of straightness I’ve seen is stripes of black and white. In this flag, they represent attraction to gender(s) one sees as dissimilar to theirs. The stripe of light periwinkle is a callback to the baby blue, baby pink, and white of the trans flag.

Kudos to Pride-Flags on Deviantart for their 23-stripe flag template; I would have been screwed without it.

I hate to break it to some of y'all but homophobia and transphobia are not automatically interchangeable words

Like… gender reveal parties aren’t straight culture…… they’re cis culture………

Some additions that I only thought up after hitting post:

1. Straight trans people exist!

2. Cis LGB+ people are just as a capable of transphobia as cis straight people and shifting the blame as “the straights are at it again!!!!!!” doesn’t always work
