Super sad to hear that the Cranberries’ Dolores O’Riordan died suddenly today at 46. For me the Cranberries are the sound of sitting in my brother’s room as kids, playing Sonic the Hedgehog while “Linger” and “Dreams” blared from the radio. RIP.

please-call-me-cordelia: Avonlea Recipes — Hetty King’s Cranberry PieIn the Road to Avonlea episode

please-call-me-cordelia:

Avonlea RecipesHetty King’s Cranberry Pie

In the Road to Avonlea episode “Strictly Melodrama,” Hetty is loathe to give up her treasured recipe for cranberry pie, which has been in the King family for three generations. Thankfully, she won the bet that would have caused her to reveal the secret. Still, the recipe for a truly great cranberry pie is hard to find, so we thought we’d share this one, which we are sure Hetty King would approve of.

Ingredients

• 4 cups whole cranberries, fresh or thawed from frozen
• ½ cup + 2 tsp. sugar
• ½ cup walnuts, chopped
• 2½ tsp. cornstarch
• ½ tsp. orange zest
• ¼ tsp. salt
• pinch freshly ground nutmeg
• 1 recipe double-crust pie dough, 2 rounds
• 1 tbsp. unsalted butter, cubed small
• 1 large egg white

Directions

• Place 3 cups of the cranberries in the bowl of a food processor and pulse until slightly chopped. Transfer to a medium bowl and toss with the remaining 1 cup of whole cranberries. Add ½ cup sugar, walnuts, cornstarch, orange zest, salt, and nutmeg; mix gently and set aside.

• On a lightly-floured work surface, roll out 1 disk of pie dough into a 12″ round. Fit into the bottom and up the sides of a 9″ pie plate. Spoon the cranberry mixture into the prepared pie plate and dot with butter.

• On a lightly-floured work surface, roll out the remaining disk of dough and create a lattice to drape over the cranberry filling. Chill the prepared pie for 1 - 24 hours.

• Preheat oven 375° F. In a small bowl, lightly beat the egg white with 2 tbsp. water. Brush all over the lattice of the pie, then sprinkle with the remaining 2 tsp. sugar.

• Bake 40 - 45 minutes on the middle rack, until the crust is golden and the cranberry juices are bubbling. Transfer to a wire rack and allow to cool completely before serving.

EACH ADDITION TO THIS POST MAKES MY BLOOD RUN COLD

This is a cranberry bog (unflooded) it’s how cranberries grow. Once they’re ripe, the blog is flooded and the cranberries harvested.

Basically by using big floaty things to round them all up and then scooping them out of the water.

thank u. i hate it a little less but the horrible little man in my head is still screaming “BOG BODY BOG BODY BOG BODY”, but i appreciate the education,

oh here is a fun lil perspective on cranberry harvesting i never heard about anywhere else. the guy who owns the restaurant right down the road from the farm, who fries our chickens sometimes, is from Boston, with the strongest Boston accent ever, and in a former life before he started slinging reasonably priced barbeque and occasional organic chicken, he was a cranberry farmer.

His farm was on the leading edge of kinda using organic/sustainable pest control methods, and one of the things that they did to keep insect damage down was that they encouraged wolf spiders to live in the cranberry field, to eat the bugs.

This was all fine and good until they flooded the bog. Now, you don’t just like flood the bog and then go around it in a boat or whatever. No, you use hip waders to get in there and put the big floaty things where they go and get all the berries and such.

Well when you’re in the bog in hip waders, that makes you the tallest thing. Wolf spiders can swim a bit, but they don’t like it, so they’re, quite understandably, looking to climb out of the water onto a tall thing.

So yeah the first interview question he always asked potential cranberry bog harvester hires was “are you cool with spiders?”

“You’d be amazed,” he said to us, shaking his head a little, “how many guys would just straight lie. Like, you think I’m asking you that question to be cute? Nah man you’re gonna have like a hundred wolf spiders trying to climb your eyebrows, you gotta be chill, those wolf spiders are fellow employees. You really gotta be chill with spiders if you’re gonna work a cranberry harvest.”

happy international workers day to the cranberry bog spiders

I want any cranberry farmers reading this to know, really truly know, that “are you cool with spiders” is not a specific enough question for this situation.

Zombie
Performed by The Cranberries
Written by Dolores O’Riordan

From Wikipedia:  Zombieis a protest song written about the 1993 IRA bombing in Warrington, England, in memory of two young victims, Jonathon Ball and Tim Barry.  Released in September of ‘94 as the lead single from The Cranberries second studio album, No Need to Argue.  It reached number one on the charts in Australia, Belgium, France, Denmark and Germany, peaking at number 18 on the US Mainstream Top 40 chart (number one on the US Alternative chart).  At the time of me writing this, the video is one of the 250 most viewed videos on YouTube, with over 660 million views.

On this particular day, the day after Ms O’Riordan’s death, why Zombie?  Why not something pretty like Linger?  Well, that’s easy.  Sometimes, a band makes a song that sounds like no other song they’ve done previously.  Not to say that all of their work sounds the same, there’s a clear variance in their other works.  But nothing else that The Cranberries had produced up to and including that time sounded like Zombie.  It’s an angry grunge sound for which some anger needed to be let loose.

This song… This beautiful protest of violence in the name of Irish independence.  I don’t have the words to sell someone on it that hasn’t heard it.  Ms O’Riordan’s voice would be all that I’d need if I hadn’t heard it.  Lingeris sweet and pretty.  Telling me that that voice growls out a chorus that would make Courtney Love green with envy?  I’m sold.

From SongFacts: On August 31, 1994, Just a few weeks after this song was released, the IRA declared a ceasefire after 25 years of conflict, leading some critics of The Cranberries to wonder if the IRA was willing to call a truce to make sure the group didn’t release any more songs about them.

RIPDolores O’Riordan 1971 - 2018

Another head hangs lowly
Child is slowly taken
And the violence caused such silence
Who are we mistaken

But you see it’s not me
It’s not my family
In your head, in your
Head they are fighting

With their tanks and their bombs
And their bombs and their guns
In your head,
In your head they are cryin’

In your head, in your head
Zombie, zombie, zombie
Hey, hey
What’s in your head, in your head
Zombie, zombie, zombie
Hey, hey, hey, oh

Dou, dou, dou, dou
Dou, dou, dou, dou
Dou, dou, dou, dou
Dou, dou, dou, dou

Another mother’s breakin’
Heart is taking over
When the violence causes silence
We must be mistaken

It’s the same old theme since nineteen-sixteen
In your head,
In your head they’re still fightin’
With their tanks and their bombs
And their bombs and their guns
In your head, in your head they are dyin’

In your head, in your head
Zombie, zombie, zombie
Hey, hey
What’s in your head, in your head
Zombie, zombie, zombie
Hey, hey, hey

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Hey, oh, ya, ya-a
