Study in a brain-friendly way: Tips to enhance growth mindsets
- Read about growth mindsets or watch an interview or film about what happens in your brain when you learn.
- Remember that the aim of learning is to learn. It doesn’t always have to be fun. Being happy or enjoying what you are learning is certainly an advantage, but it’s not a dealbreaker. There is nothing wrong with a little discomfort while you learn. Don’t be put off if you don’t always enjoy learning; it’s really not important.
- Note: making a mistake is a valuable lesson in itself. Most people don’t like making mistakes, but seen as a valuable lesson, mistakes take on a different meaning. You are, after all, learning. And if learning is important to you, mistakes become valuable.
- Try to think of something that you are now better at than you were in the past. What was it that you found difficult, but which has now become easier? How did you achieve this? Thinking about this will put you into a growth mindset.
- When you hear yourself saying ‘I can’t do this!’…….add ‘yet’
When you scroll through your fitness inspiration accounts, keep in mind that you are only seeing outer shells and what they want you to see. It is important to remember that despite appearances, everyone works through insecurities, no matter how fit or strong they appear. I think it is important to speak about that part of the health journey, because some are under the illusion that the insecurities disappear once you reach your health or fitness goal. Occasionally, I still catch unloving thoughts from my past overweight and insecure self, try to creep back in. When this happens, I simply observe instead of engage, because I know that….
1. Anything contrary to love, is not my truth of who I authentically am.
2. By engaging, I give those thoughts power, and that’s not the life I’m trying to live.
3. Those thoughts were the result of my weight gain and unhappiness in the past, and I am not trying to go back.
The reality is, if you are striving to better yourself in any way (health, relationships, professionally…), there is a good chance you will be met with some level of resistance. That’s growth, so take it as a good sign that you are on the right path. Get concerned if there is no push-back and it seems easy.

Change brings uncomfortable situations. Uncomfortable situations allow you to get to know and understand yourself better. Understanding yourself better brings growth, and with growth, comes healing.
