i-love-frogs-but-loki-more:

Wow, Disney did great job with casting. Carter and Sadie Kane really look like twins

being egyptian and reading the kane chronicles is so wild because it says that the egyptian gods migrate to wherever the center of western civilization is, implying that ancient egypt was a western civilization or that egypt’s a was, and not an is.like why is this non-white civilization which manifests today in a real life country supposedly a western civilization but the actual people whose heritage is tied to that civilization are excluded from it? why is a white british woman (a WHITE BRITISH WOMAN!) the living incarnation of isis - the mother of egypt? there’s no cultural nuance. there’s no consideration. the image of the egyptian mother, through isis or otherwise, is something so fucking important in egyptian culture, and to have it represented by a british woman - a descendant of those who bastardized and stole our heritage- is just insane to me. perhaps an interesting analysis of post colonial egypt in a meta sense, but that’s for egyptian artists to dissect, not riordan. and that’s only one thing. egypt - the actual egypt from which everything in the series originates) in that series is so mocked. i remember at some point sadie and walt are walking through egypt and mock the fact that since the arabic language has no “p”, they pronounce pepsiasbebsi.no respect.the very foundation of this series is based in racism, in colonial thinking, and, ultimately, white supremacy. why is zia, the only actual egyptian in the main cast, so irrelevant? so quiet and without agency? in a meta way, she’s like egypt itself. i just wanted to bring this to light since a lot of rr crit focuses on the racism and homophobia present in pjo and hoo and mcga and toa- perfectly valid criticisms that are well deserved - but barely anyone talks about the inherent colonialist and racist foundations of the entirety of the kane chronicles, which is why i wanted to bring it to light. enjoy the series if you want, i’m not saying you’re not allowed, but as long as we’re criticizing riordan, let’s criticize everything.

Exactly.

As a Greek I second OPs point and the post has my full support! It also made me wonder why Riordan (and the West) has done the exact same thing to other cultures, and also to the Greek culture specifically and nobody batted an eye. (The problematic things Americans notice aren’t the things Greeks noticed btw, bc the Americans noticed American things). And while I don’t feel well adding this to a post about Egypt, none of my posts about the missappropriation of the Greek culture and stories gains that type of traction. So, “make your own post” doesn’t apply here because people always ignore those posts. And because we and other ethnic people were ignored, he continued to do it, also harming the Egyptian culture in the process.

The rediculous thing is that he didn’t even bother going “that deep” (I know, it wasn’t even that deep with Egypt) as he did for Egypt and he still gave nonexistent and shitty representation. If people here must see a Greek addition to understand some of your popular American writers bullshit their way into writing cultures, so be it.

Riordan is one of the creators who usually learns from mistakes and tries to do better. Imagine what the others are doing…

As an Egyptian I agree with op fully (and also agree with the added bit about Greek heritage)

Since their mother’s death, Carter and Sadie have become near strangers. While Sadie has lived with her grandparents in London, her brother has traveled the world with their father, the brilliant Egyptologist, Dr. Julius Kane.

One night, Dr. Kane brings the siblings together for a “research experiment” at the British Museum, where he hopes to set things right for his family. Instead, he unleashes the Egyptian god Set, who banishes him to oblivion and forces the children to flee for their lives.

Soon, Sadie and Carter discover that the gods of Egypt are waking, and the worst of them —Set— has his sights on the Kanes. To stop him, the siblings embark on a dangerous journey across the globe - a quest that brings them ever closer to the truth about their family and their links to a secret order that has existed since the time of the pharaohs.

I spent my childhood going to museums and my favorite exhibits were always the ones about Egypt. When I found out one of my favorite authors was writing a series about Egyptian mythology I was ecstatic! I couldn’t wait to see how Rick Riordan would weave his story.

Here are a couple of things i enjoyed about The Red Pyramid(very minor to minimal spoilers ahead):

  • The world building was phenomenal! I loved how Riordan blends his stories with realism and mythology.
  • The character building. The way the author writes his characters and makes you become attached despite your best attempts to not become attached because let’s be honest here, Mr. Riordan is not the kindest when it comes to characters. He can enjoy seeing them suffer.
  • The fact that incest is actually addressed.  There is a lot of incest in Ancient Egyptian history.  It actually makes learning more about the culture of the pharaohs a little difficult. The way Mr. Riordan handles it is graceful and leaves no doubt in your mind that there is no incest in his books.
  • I have always enjoyed how the love story is not a big deal in Riordan’s books.  It helps us keep in mind that the character are in their young teens.  No young teenager needs to worry about being in love and finding the love of their life. There is plenty of time to do that when they are older.
  • In Chapter 9 she says ‘My dear, i’m a cat everything i see is mine’.  I have always loved cats i have 3 of them. They are simply the most precious and sassy animals in the world.
  • Not many authors are comfortable about addressing race in their books but something Riordan has always done well is talk about the realities of being one race or having a specific belief.  In The Red Pyramid the relationship between PoC(in particular African American men) and the Police. He is very open and honest and states things exactly how they are. He does not gently blow this topic off(which would be difficult since one of the main characters is a PoC)
  • One of the final things I appreciated in this book is the fact that Riordan makes little references to his other books. In particular he references the Percy Jackson Series. If you have not read the Percy Jackson books you won’t understand the reference but if you do you will immediately be saying to yourself ‘I see what you did there’.

This book is perfect for anyone who wants a story that has an adventure but isn’t all consumed in romance. I feel like most adventure books are more absorbed in the romance and use that as a point to move the plot along but in my opinion none of Riordan’s books do that.  This book is technically middle grade so it is also very easy to read.

Overall I give this story 4.5 Bards!

I love that Sadie, unlike the rest of the riordanverse characters, does not say ‘gods.’ She says god. Despite knowing lots of Egyptian gods. Despite hosting a god from a polytheism religion in her head. Sadie just has so much audacity it’s beautiful ☺️

Isn’t it kinda weird that Anubis, a 5000+ year old god, took romantic interest in a 12/13 year old girl?

Like Apollo is 4000+ and he says:

“Very young twelve”

Apollo refers to Meg as a very young twelve, hence no attraction. And yet Anubis loves Sadie??? She’s not of consenting age/an adult…that’s kinda odd. I mean, Anubis sayshe still feels like a teen, but he’s still 5000+ and it’s still weird. Anyone else agree??

Hey guys, I had this idea a few years ago about a fandom event. I want to organize a festival with competitions and reading sessions for the month of August (Percy’s birth month yay!) and September (before the release of the Tower of Nero).

Here’s my proposal:
1.Group Reads based on reading speed and the number of books wanted to be read (individual discretion to choose categories)

2.Edits competition for video and picture collage edits. (You guys are so talented in these!!)

3. FANART contest (separate categories for digital and traditional art)

4. Headcanon and Alternate Scene writing Writing (didn’t like that scene in the books, well change it then)

Prizes would be cool certificates and perhaps lifelong friends.

This is an endeavor of a huge scale and pros are that we all can have fun and do something in our spare time. Stressed? Get a freaking certificate for revisiting your tween-teenage years.
I’m thinking about making this a dual-platform festival (Instagram being the other-cuz many fans may not have a tumblr.)

Also did I mention shout-outs? No? Well the Winners will get shout-outs on both platforms.

Now all that’s left is blowing this post up. Tell your fellow fans and lets keep this fandom alive. Ya’ll don’t even need to follow me if ya’ll don’t want to.

SPREAD THE NEWS ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

PERCY JACKSON WILL NEVER DIE

Peace out,

demigodsrock

why does no one talk about that meeting chiron was busy at during tower of nero? the meeting between different godly pantheons to discuss a crisis?? he saw bast and mimir??? they created a joint task force???? like that’s surely setting up another crossover spinoff book?????

Y’all, we are getting a Kane Chronicles movie series too! I’m legit crying, black boys are gonna get the same representation I got. I’m so excited.

☠︎︎ ☠︎︎

• His favourite movie is Edward Scissorhands

• He sleeps in Will’s shirts because they’re too big making them super comfy

• He likes to raise skeletons from the ground and use them to terrorise new campers

• L e a t h e r J a c k e t s

• Hiking boots. At all times.

• A lot of people come to him at times of loss because he is one of the only people that actually knows what it will feel like to die and isn’t afraid of it.

• He and Will decide to get pets after they move in together but they can’t decide so they both come home with different animals. Will gets a Golden Retriever and Nico gets a three legged black cat that looks like it just returned from the depths of the underworld. (Maybe because it did)

• When he doesn’t want to talk to someone he just shadow travels out of the situation.

• He doesn’t let random doctors treat him any more. Just Will. He needs someone to practice on.

• He doesn’t know how to swim.

• He listens to The Lonely Island on repeat.

• Is a cinnamon roll but would probably kill you to protect his friends and a family.

• The Apollo kids taught him how to play the drums so he could surprise Will but now he just sits in the corner playing death metal on the drums. It drives the neighbours insane.

• Has a soft spot for 80s and 90s romcoms but tries to hide it. Only Will knows.

• Likes to fix random things around camp without telling anyone so that they are surprised when they are magically mended.

• They are overprotective over each other and their kids.

• They have movie marathons at the weekends, they buy big bags of popcorn and fizzy drinks for it.

• Their house is littered with hidden celestial gold weapons so that they can defend their family from monsters. The kids have been carefully instructed not to touch them though.
