DIY Ocean Waves Bottle

Updated Link 2019

Not just for kids because I love this too - very calming like the meditation jars here. This is the closest “recipe” I’ve seen to mimicking the expensive wave machines and the simplest.

*Similar idea - a lava lamp for kids of all ages here.

Find the Tutorial from Lilla a Design here.

HOW TO

Ocean in a bottle. Inspiration came from bhoomplay. You need:transparent plastic bottle, filled 1/3 up with waterblue food colouringsunseed oil ( or similar) to fill the rest of the bottlemaybe some seashells, stones, fishes in plastic, we used small ocean themed plastic beadsThe oil and water does not mix, the oil creates slow waves in the water when you turn it back and forth. No need to say: A loved it, and L spied after all the small fishes and seashells. I love this kind of crafting, super easy, cheap and lots of fun.

~Sinking~

They say a soul weighs merely grams at death;

However, this cannot be true for me,

For every time a person loses life

While breathing, souls do seem to sink in waves:

.

The composition of this silent sea

Is suffocating foam and reaching ropes

Of seaweed tearing at my lungs and feet.

A tide of pain and memory so dark

Do follow not too far behind my eyes

And pull me down from deep within my past.

.

They say a soul weighs merely grams at death;

However, this cannot be true for me,

For drowning of my mind and being comes

From waves of loss that sink within the soul.

.

random sketch and brush experiment

there are 2 IDs, the first for a quick overview and the second under the read-more for a more detailed description of the paintings. I’m trying out a new way of doing IDs, constructive feedback is very welcome!

[summarised ID: two sketchy digital illustrations in grey and blue tones. in the first illustration, there is a figure standing on the left, back facing the viewer. they have roughly shoulder blade-length hair that a gust of wind is sweeping to the right. in front of them, in the distance, there is what can be interpreted as falling stars. in the second illustration, the same figure is horizontally flipped and is now on the right side of the piece, while the star-like streaks have become more like a huge wave, swirling around the figure chaotically. end short ID]

[more detailed ID: for the first illustration, the things that appear to be falling stars are made of thick diagonal streaks of messy brush strokes grouped together in a pointillism style. each dot is oval-shaped with ragged edges, and a slightly different color than the rest, though they form one cohesive greyish overall color. the background is a flat fill of dark gray, the figure’s hair is grayish blue, their cloak is a faded blue, and the star-like streaks are purplish grey, accented by cyan glimmers in some parts. all the streaks start from the top and head down, at an angle from left to right. there is a large streak in the foreground, nearer the viewer than the figure, heading towards the right corner. in front of the figure and in the background, there is a middle sized streak heading downwards at a similar angle, and a small, faded and thin streak further back.

for the second illustration, the waves start at the right of the image, flow down and then curve upwards and fill the entire left portion, and crest over the top of the image. it gives an immersive feeling, like the viewer is standing inside the crashing waves. there are a few waves that decrease in saturation as they head to the background, giving a tunnel effect. the nearest wave is bright cyan, then the other waves are light green, blue, faded blue, and then varying shades of greyish blue that eventually blend into the background. the figure is more sketchy and unfinished than in the previous illustration, and there is a watermark in the shape of a bird wearing a top hat on their left. the figure is also placed higher in the illustration, so the top part of their head is cropped off. end ID]

OK I’m never doing this again, it’s way too tiring. sorry

I have had enough of this life. I wanna live and die in the Ghibli World.

Ghibli Rooms and it’s poetic sensibility.

Little
Chiron
Black

Barry Jenkins’ near perfect film Moonlight did not need anything but faces and lyrics to engulf its viewer into some jaw dropping and mind boggling scenes. It tells us a story of a young, black, gay, poor and lonely kid, Chiron, living in Miami. The film pans over three parts, with three actors playing Chiron in his different stages of life. It is a character study of a boy who is trying to find his place in a world which has been nothing but ignorant to him. The films’ complex themes of sexuality, family and masculinity are portrayed by the characters with such care and precision. It puts us into a very difficult world and tries to question our whole social structure. Jenkins use faces and water to talk with the viewers about the evolution of Chiron from a child to a man. Water acts as a symbol for transformation and freedom. Whereas moonlight is shown as something under which, one can discover their true identity. The concept of masculinity is vital to the film’s exploration of Chiron’s identity and the societal forces that shape it. Jenkins gives us the visual proof of ‘some things are better left unsaid’. He uses close ups in this movie to invite us into these characters’ world. Juan(a drug dealer) and Kevin(Chiron’s friend) both presents Chiron with examples of standing up for oneself. When faced with the prospect of answering who are we against the grim need for change, personal acceptance seems like the only solution.

I always love a piece of art that emphasizes our traditional and cultural beliefs and poses questions that we never even cared to consider.

It is a film that anyone can watch without any specificity and it will leave them touched.

Loving And Hating The Ocean

I have always loved the ocean,

But at the same time I hate it.

There’s just so many things I love about it,

Yet so many things I also hate.

I love how the waves shine in the beautiful moonlight,

I hate the waves of the beautiful deep.

I love that it will always be there for us,

I hate that anything could be inside the beautiful yet frightening deep.

I just don’t know…should I love or hate The Ocean.
