“We sent whalesong into interstellar space because the creatures that sing these songs are superlative beings that fill us with awe, terror, and affection.” I received this literally stunning piece from @nicotraditional a couple of months ago. I haven’t posted it, because I respect the art so much that it’s difficult to find a photo that does it justice. I love my space whale so much. #humpbackwhale #space #spacetattoo #whaletattoo #vancouvertattoo #vancouvertattooartist #tattoo #sealife #forearmtattoo #blackwork #humpbackwhaletattoo #amazingart #uniquetattoos #nofilter

Is it just us or did this year feel longer than an Apolemia siphonophore?

Members of the genus Apolemia are some of the longest animals on the planet. For decades, there was only one species name that was used for all Apolemia siphonophores. The description of the woolly siphonophore, A. lanosa, and the red-grooved siphonophore, A. rubriversa, by MBARI researchers and our collaborators was a first step toward examining the full diversity of this group of siphonophores.

Even with the same basic blueprint, the diversity of siphonophores is spectacular. These colonial creatures are made up of specialized segments that work together as one. They may not be familiar to most, but they’re abundant animals in the ocean. Scientists have described some 175 siphonophore species. Most follow a similar body plan—a gas-filled float provides buoyancy, swimming bells propel the colony, and a central stem bears specialized parts for feeding, defense, and reproduction.

This year MBARI partnered with Google Arts and Culture to showcase some of the most stunning species MBARI and our collaborators have encountered. It’s a must-see if you’re a siphono-fan like we are!

Favorite moment of 2021: that one time we had a dance-off with a bunny-eared amphipod ✨

Amphipods are often mistaken for tiny shrimp. They resemble shrimp in some ways, but are laterally compressed and have no carapace. They’re important food for many fishes, invertebrates, seabirds, and even marine mammals. Amphipods are mostly detritivores (eating decomposing plant and animal parts, as well as feces) and scavengers.

Amphipods in the genus Scina, like the cutie jamming in this video clip, can emit their own light (bioluminescence). Researchers have recorded this light and found that it is among the shortest wavelengths of light produced by any known organism!

Jingle shells, jingle shells ✨

Although we often see these deep-sea octopods, we know little about many of the species that belong to the Bathypolypodinae subfamily. We typically find the species within this group walking along or swimming just above the seafloor, hunting for snails, crabs, and other small animals.

This particular octopus was captured on camera crawling across a bed of cold-seep clams, Ectenagena extenta. These clams can grow to 246 millimeters (nearly 10 inches) in shell length and are found in aggregations at cold seeps in Monterey Bay. Cold seep organisms depend on bacteria that use the sulfide from these seeps for their metabolism. Other seep organisms then use the chemical energy produced by bacterial metabolism. Since their discovery in Monterey Bay in the 1980s, many researchers have studied various environmental and ecological aspects of the Monterey seeps. ⠀

We know you’ve waited for this moment all year—MBARI’s Best of 2021 video is finally here!

MBARI sustained our commitment to ocean exploration and discovery in 2021. The year brought more challenges, but exploring our big, blue backyard always inspires awe and wonder—and curiosity about the life we find there.

From rare deep-sea fishes and giant jellies to adorable octopuses and twinkling squid, MBARI’s remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) encountered some captivating and extraordinary moments in the deep. These fascinating finds underscore the dazzling diversity of life in the deep sea. As we continue to explore the largest and least known habitat on our planet—the ocean—we promise to share our discoveries with you. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

Panda, Panda
Panda, Panda, Panda, Panda, Panda

There are two distinct types of pteropods—those with shells and those without. The shelled pteropods produce a net of sticky mucus to passively collect and eat marine snow. Though they may look and sound cute, the pteropods without shells—like this Notobranchaea macdonaldi, also known as the panda bear sea angel—are all carnivores and, as far as we know, feed solely upon the shelled pteropods.

image

These carnivorous pteropods have sets of curved hooks and suckers or sticky tentacles that are tucked inside the animal’s head when it’s not actively feeding. When these feeding structures come into contact with a shelled pteropod, they grasp and pull the prey out of its shell. We don’t yet know how they locate their prey, especially because they don’t have eyes. They likely use something similar to a sense of smell, or they may just swim around until they happen to bump into their favorite snack.

The most reliable way to determine the age of a Blue Whale (and other baleen whales to be precise) is by close examination of their earwax. Throughout their lives they form long plugs of earwax of alternating layers of light and dark shades. The changes in colour are caused by the whales dietary pattern of fasting and feasting and each set is produced over one year, therefore, counting the layers gives an indication of the whale’s age. On average, blue whales live between 80 and 90 years.

Scientists have also studied levels of cortisol, the hormone released in times of stress, found in whales’ earwax to determine the impact of human behaviour on the whales. These studies showed that in the 1920s and 30s, when whale hunting was at it’s peak, more cortisol was found in the whales’ earwax, suggesting that the whales had a profound emotional reaction to the hunting. The ear plugs can also be used to determine the pollutants the whales have been exposed to.

Also interesting is the size of a Blue Whale’s heart.
