The Saraswati Anemone Shrimp makes its home on a sea anemone (the purple and green). Fish allow this 1-cm long “cleaner shrimp” to crawl all over them, including inside their mouths and gills, in order to eat tiny unwanted parasites off of the much larger animals.

Since they play such an important role in the health of the reef ecosystem, most if not all other animals just let them do their jobs and don’t try to eat them.

If you look closely you can see right through this shrimp’s exoskeleton and notice the clutch of eggs it’s carrying - photo taken at Kri Island, Raja Ampat, Indonesia

New Tank

I’ve had this little half circle 3 gallon tank for a while. The last inhabitant of it was Henry, one of my past betas. I don’t want to put another fish in it, but rather make it a shrimp tank!! I have been loving the look of yellow or orange shrimp, and I feel this tank can show them off beautifully.

In it, I have put some Hornwort, Microsword (maybe?), and Java Fern. I also have a few of my Cherry Shrimp inhabiting it at the moment to keep the algae and other stuff that grows in a new tank at bay. So far, they’ve done a great job!!

Mantis shrimp are named for their very fast and powerful front claws. When the claws strike forward at prey, they have the same acceleration as a .22 calibre bullet. Even if the claw itself misses, just the resulting shock wave is often enough to kill prey. They have been known to break through aquarium glass in a single punch.

The shrimp also has the most complex eyes in the animal kingdom, capable of seeing 12 primary colours, compared to the 3 that humans can see.
