Behold, the superfam family tree! AKA the biggest tree I’ve made so far. Sorry it took so long! There are way more members than I anticipated.

Same message as always, tell me if I’ve missed anyone and message me if you need any clarifications because my handwriting can be pretty awful.

Some facts I stumbled upon while making this, that might also clear up some confusion:
- Mia Kent, otherwise known as Cir-El, was introduced as Clark and Lois’s daughter from the future, but she was actually born to two human parents, with Superman as a genetic template. So she’s a clone.

- Hunter Prince is actually Diana’s son, with the Darkness being his father. Diana gave him up to Clark and Lois, who raised him as their own son alongside Jon.

- Christopher Kent was born originally as Lor-Zod, General Zod’s son. Clark and Lois adopted him in an effort to protect him from the government, and he would later on take on the title of Nightwing.

- Ur-Zod is the clone of both Lord Superman and Lady Wonder Woman, evil counterparts to Clark and Diana. Clark adopts him, but is not married to Lois in this universe

- Joel Kent killed his sister Kara out of rage and jealousy from always feeling like everything was a challenge, a race, with her. He was then killed by Luthor who basically revealed that everything he’d known was a lie and he killed his sister for nothing.
However, he had a son with a woman named Mei-Lai before he died. The son was named Clark Wayne, as he ended up being adopted by Bruce Wayne Jr, who was married to Kara before Joel killed her. He also married Mei-Lai after adopting Clark.
Clark Wayne would then go on to have twin daughters, Lois and Lara Wayne.
Andthen, centuries after all of this, Clark Kent (who is immortal for some reason I can’t recall) has two children with Beautiful Dreamer. Lar-El (his son) and Vara (his daughter)

Crazy, right!? Kinda want to make a second family tree just for that universe because it’s insane

So I want to write some practice essays as preparation for uni next year. I want to be serious about this but I also want to have fun with it. So I thought it’d be fun to write some essays on DC comics!

I’m asking for topic suggestions. They can either be serious (e.g. an in-depth analysis of Bruce Wayne’s character) or not (e.g. an essay on which Justice League member would make the best roomate). Have fun with it!

I’ll do topics on any character, family or anything related to DC comics, really. And I’ll do persuasive, compare and contrast, and close analysis. Either give me the easiest topics or give me a challenge, it’s up to you! Additiionally, it’d be really helpful if you would also suggest what comics, show or movie to watch in order to research into the topic before writing the essay. You don’t have to! But it’d be helpful

I love Billy being constantly adopted, so au where Shazamily!Billy, Superfam!Billy, Batfam!Billy, and Still-Homeless!Billy all meet each other.

Homeless keeps the name Billy, Shazam goes by Marvel, Batfam is exclusively called Batson because the others think it’s hilarious, Superfam goes by Captain.

Ten bucks says it ends in an adoption war to who gets to drag (a very reluctant) Little™ Billy home with them, cuz that’s just the natural progression of things.

A tiny Kara floating smugly. I promoted her to Clark’s costume

everyday i think abt the differences between how superfam and batfam interact. And how it translates into their relationships with 3ach other

how clark is SO fucking lonely sometimes and how he keeps people at arms length and how most of the time like maybe 5 people know both his identities and . fucking. his BASE is called the fortress of SOLITUDE. Whereas the batcave, while still exclusively, is.. shared! Like Bruce is rude and mean and a lot of people in Canon do know his identity and it’s like. So many thoughts

Like.. its about how deeply he wants to be normal and how he’s afraid he’ll hurt people and how that restraint and fear is baked into his very soul and it’s about how much TRUST he has in someone to tell them his secret identity because he’s spent his life hiding it and leading a double life that very very few people actually know about. Whereas almost fucking everyone in the batfam knows who batman is and it’s like.

It’s about how clark’s so friendly and open and he uses that to keel people at arms length !!

Like people talk abt bruce being a loner but like. In Canon, he usually does work with people! He has an entire family of people who do vilgante stuff with him and keep in contact with him, for better or worse.

But Superman usually! Works alone! Like yes superfam is a thing but they very rarely interact with each other and unlike batfam who are connected, through love or through malice, superfam is a group of people who are connected but don’t really talk to each other all that much and they’re all very repressed. They’re just better at covering it up.

Bruce did start to work with Dick so very very early on in his career. He was only very recently trying out the whole Batman schtick, and here’s a child (-sometimes barely 10 years younger than him in some versions of canon too!) who has similar trauma, and is ready to channel all of that trauma in similar ways (vigilantism).

Meanwhile, Clark, who’s been hiding who he is for a very long time, who’s only moments where he’s had to wonder whether he should reveal himself was with potential romantic partners, the first supers he finds are either (depending on continuity, medium, and how one personally envisions the concept of superfam) Kara his cousin, Matrix an engineered clone of Kara, or Kon his clone/sort of clone/superman replacement. each are already fully formed late teenagers, with a trauma that’s so very very different from his.

All that to say that I think Bruce has had the benefit of having “training wheels” in terms fo sidekicks, making the batfam much tighter, whichever dynamics you like to see in them, but Clark never had the benefit of bonding easily or even of being “needed” by his first potential sidekicks.

It makes the superfam all the more complex in a way, and their ties all the looser, because to bridge the gaps, they would have to invest an incredible amount of time in each others.

Also for all the posturing happening in the batfam, they all are strangely prone to emotional vulnerability. Either through shows of violence, emotional outbursts or analysis in hindsight. They yell, fight and talk, even though they are tight lipped.

On the contrary, there is a culture of fronting as “I’m good, It’s fine” in the Superfam. I don’t know as much about Kara, but Supers will keep their shit so close to the chest you’ll never know what’s happening for real sometimes. How do you finally bridge gaps if you refuse to show your soft underbelly?

IDK that’s my take, I do think it’s fascinating seeing these paradoxical differences! And I think that’s why it’s also so interesting to shove batfam and superfam members into situatiosn together: their apparent and deeper contradictions and the paradoxical exceptations people have, makes it interesting.

reading this makes me even more upset they aged up Jon so quick, he pretty much missed at least 6 years of his life when he allowed him to go with his father to space.

Like you said the bonding with potential sidekicks, never being needed by those potential sidekicks all of those could’ve been done with Jon.

i don’t remember much of what i read about superman 2016 since it’s been a while but i do remember what i said in a presentation about this.

Aging Jon up was a mistake not only for Jon but also Clark. I remember saying something about how being a father would be greatly develop his character even more. Now in the comics he’s off planet while his son takes over his reponsibilities over metropolis and we’re back to supes going solo.

i hope what i said made sense it’s been a while since I’ve talked Jon.

Nah yeah, you’re right and it totally makes sense. And in a way, Jon aging up is a missed opportunity for all of the Superfam. A superchild! Imagine that!

Not to go all “found family” or whatever, but Jon would have been a good way for Kon to discover what having a childhood is, without him having gone through it: that’s both angst and bonding potential. For Clark it’s also going through all the joys and pains his own parents went through. Kara is getting to come to terms with the fact that Krypton is gone, but Kryptonians still can thrive.

Instead of retconning Chris into “urr durr evil Zod child derp” they could have had Jon not be a single kid, he could have gained a brother. Knowing that Chris was Lois’ own growth as “I’m not sure I can be a good mother” he is so very important to Lois’ own story. Sure, that’s not the “same Lois” or whatever, but there is something here, especially since with the Omniverse it’s very possible to have some of the memories seeping through from the other Lois.

From this first growth, Clark could have finally understood that the Superfam can actually be a team, a group of mentors and mentees, that they can organise and not just be lonely heavy hitters in vigilante teams who never talk to each other.

Bring in Kenan then! And Bizarro and Pup Pup. Bring back Mon-El anc Cir-El,ffs!!

Anyway.

The superfam is a story of loneliness and missed opportunities. Thank god for fandom fixing all that shit.

Bruce: Yeah, I get that there are moments, small moments, very infrequent moments, where I’m not the easiest guy to work with, but who the hell is?

Clark: I am
