getting teary eyed thinking about gerda gottlieb’s paintings of her wife after she transitioned

thing is, for a lot of these paintings it wasn’t “after” lily elbe’s transition. there was no after to it. the one op posted was painted in 1928. this was 2 years before lily legally changed her name and began undergoing revolutionary gender affirming procedures. unfortunately she died due to complications of an experimental uterine transplant in 1931.

up until that point, during the day lily continued to dress in masculine clothing and even attended galleries showing gottlieb’s paintings of her. which was kind of iconic. she got to stand in a room full of people who were marveling her beauty, not knowing she was right next to them. it must have been such a cute little secret for them as a couple.

here’s gerda and lilly together

not to mention that for most people there is no real “after” to a transition. especially for these trans historical figures who had to balance identity and safety at all times.

i think having a wife paint these portraits must have felt really amazing for lily. to be able to see herself through the eyes of someone who loved her. i’m very much seconding op on the getting teary eyed.

here are some of my favorite gottleib lily paintings

“I think having a wife paint these portraits must have felt
really amazing for Lili. To be able to see herself through the eyes
of someone who loved her.”

Gallery Attendee: Oh, this! This is absolutely sublime!
Your model is the most beautiful woman in Paris

Gerda Gottleib: The world, actually.

Lili Elbe, standing beside them in masculine attire: *cries*

One thing I’ve learned over the course of my life is that if you feel uncomfortable saying your nown name out loud then maybe that’s not your name

With my new name I’ve found it easier to tell people, I’m able to say it without feeling discomfort, and maybe this’ll apply to others too

Seems like a Dog of Wisdom kinda moment.

Because that’s a good wisdom.

“transition poses some ethical questions. Such as, from what age should you be allowed to irreversibly change your body.“

This of course completely ignores the fact that puberty makes irreversible changes to your body. But let us just rephrase the question: “from what age do you gain bodily autonomy?” Now it gets very easy to answer: From the moment you’re fucking born.

I’m sorry, I’m reblogging this twice in a row it is that important

Stand up and say it again for the people in the back row.

This is all completely true and correct, of course, but on the topic of changes that irreversibly change a child’s body, prithee, go and talk to a fucking ballet dancer.

If you start ballet at 16, you are too old to ever expect to be able to do it seriously. If you start at 12 you’re too old. If you want to do ballet as a serious thing, as a career, you need to start at like eight years old or even younger, because your bones and joints need to be trained while they’re still flexible in order for you to be able to perform many of the required motions and stances of ballet. In particular, you need to be able to perform turnout of the hips, but all of your joints in your legs and feet will be affected, and this irreversibly changes your body.

And yet! Nobody talks about this as a negative thing! Little girls say they want to be ballet dancers, and if their parents have enough money, that’s what they get to be! Does it cause problems in later life? Yeah, sometimes! Often, even! But nobody talks about that because it’s a thing for cis people to do and so naturally it’s all fine!

Go and talk to a fucking ballet dancer.

Trans kids and parents of trans kids living in Texas: The Governor just issued a dangerous order declaring all forms of gender affirming care as child abuse under existing law.

Under this directive, all persons working with children, including doctors, teachers, counselors, and caregivers, are required to report any child believed to be transgender or face prosecution. Parents may have children removed from their homes and placed in state custody.

This is an extremely dangerous situation. Parents of trans children: leave the state now. The user below has offered assistance to those looking to get to a safer place. Please reach out to her if you need to. Important information will follow.

Please be safe out there, all of you. I love you and I am so sorry these things have come to pass. Let’s get through this.

I would personally like to urge those currently working in law in the state of Texas to begin fighting this directive immediately. Trans children and their parents will no doubt need legal representation as the fallout from this begins to emerge. If you are under threat from governor Abbott’s order, I encourage you to reach out to the ACLU of Texas at this url:

To those living in Texas, whether you are in the line of fire or not: now is the time to begin contacting your representatives. You can find who serves your county using this web form:

If you know anyone who could be endangered by this order, check in with them. Give them your support and be there for them. I’m standing by if anyone out there needs a signal boost for their situation.

Again, hang in there and be safe. When threats like this come out, sticking together and protecting one another is crucial.

Here is a consolidated list of the current gofundme’s from the parents of trans kids who need immediate relocation from the state of Texas.

Nope. No way. The biggest Halloween shop in the U.S. is trying to sell a costume that makes fun of transgender celebrity Caitlyn Jenner. Spirit Halloween needs to know trans people are not a costume, and trans people are not a joke.

Caitlyn coming out was a huge deal this year – she gave millions of people a greater understanding of what it’s like to be trans. But prejudice and violence against transgender people are rampant. By selling a “Call Me Caitlyn” costume, Spirit Halloween will be cashing in on this bigotry.

Sign this and tell them it’s got to go: go.allout.org/en/a/caitlyn-spirit

(And yes, Halloween is fun! But if the model shown here with the costume is any indication, this is not a fun costume for trans people on Halloween night.)

Transgender visibility day has come around once again. I wish all of my trans brothers and sisters, closeted or out, binary or some other flavor of gender, a hope that you all stay safe.

sneezewizard:

I wanted to share some links to resources for people who are interested in doing what they can to push back against the anti-Trans bills going through dozens of U.S. state legislatures right now. I’ve worked in political campaigns and political fundraising for 7 years and can say that without a doubt, the thing that stops these types of attacks is mobilization and engagement from the public.

The GOP is engaging in a sustained campaign of policy and propaganda to stoke anti-trans sentiment as a means of gaining power. They’re getting people angry because it will get them to the polls this November. As of late march, over 240 of these bills have been introduced across the country.

The goal of the Republican Party here is to divide and overwhelm the left. They have always wanted to do violence against trans bodies, and the timing here is not an accident – this rhetoric is amping up because we are approaching midterms. They’re scapegoating trans people to mobilize voters, and we should expect them to continue to raise anti-trans fervor and push these bills through state legislatures. This will get worse, not better, if we allow it to. They will continue to attack trans people and they will continue to ruin lives, especially if we do nothing, because they’ll learn they can get away with it.

If you don’t live in the U.S., you can STILL help:

Digital organizing isn’t useless if done the right way – especially around fundraising. If you are not from the U.S., you can’t donate directly to U.S. political campaigns, but you can donate to nonprofits working to protect trans rights. If you personally can’t give that much, it’s OK. But if you have a following because of fandom, you likely have the kind of engagement that nonprofits dream about. Trust me. Use that for good – post links to fundraising pages, help raise money, raise awareness, direct people to resources, tag news organizations about anti-Trans bills. I’ve seen a lot of people in my fandoms doing this, and that’s amazing! Keep doing this kind of thing. It makes a difference, I promise.

Consider the options below, but also do your own research if so inclined:

Host a fundraiser through the Trevor Project

Protect & Defend Trans Youth Fund

The Transgender Law Center

If you DO live in the U.S., you have even more ways to help:

It’s midterm season. And that means there are a lot of elections for seats in U.S. state legislatures. The incumbent party does almost always loses seats in midterms, which means that the GOP is set to take more state-level and federal-level seats.
The mood amongst political organizers is not optimistic. If you are in a place where you can volunteer or organize for a candidate or the Democratic Party at the state level, we’d love to have you. Seriously. We need your help. (This is not to get you all to like or feel one way about the Democratic Party, because I know, they’re far from perfect. But they’re not the ones passing these bills.)
Young people do not turn out in midterm elections and that’s kind of by design – the powers that be don’t want them to show up. Which is exactly why we have to show up. Even if Republicans gain seats in state legislatures this midterm, there’s a big difference between small gains and an absolute blowout. Don’t be afraid of losing a little bit if the alternative is losing everything.

  1. Do you live in a state considering or passing anti-Trans legislation? NCTE has this tracker for all of the anti-trans bills going through states right now. Call your state representatives  and let them know how you feel. Call your governor’s office and let them know how you feel. Phone calls tend to have a bigger impact than online letters  and petitions. What I don’t recommend is calling someone who is NOT your representative – typically, politicians only want to hear from people in their districts.
  2. Is your state legislature currently controlled by the Republican Party? See where you can help out with the midterms, either through volunteering or donating.Ballotpedia is a great resource to see what your state     elections are this year.
  3. Do you live in a liberal district? That’s fine – this tool will help you find a nearby area where you can make a difference. It shows national level races by default, but there’s a tab for state elections. Not enough attention is given to state elections, and the attacks on trans youth at the state level are proof of what happens when we ignore state politics.

I just wanted to share all these to let people know that we are not helpless. We may be exhausted and attacked and angry, but we’re not helpless.

Ive come a very long way these past 5 years. Shit gets better yall. Stay strong️‍⚧️

OK I’m TIRED of this shit. Stop asking me if I want bottom surgery! Here are 3 reasons:

Madrid hoy ha amanecido un poco más inclusivo. Será que las disidencias están hartas y van a reclamar lo que les pertenece #bancosinvertidos

Madrid today has dawned a little more inclusive. It seems that protesters are fed up and they are going to reclaim what belongs to all of the people #QueerBenches

Madrid dawns with “LGBTQ+ Pride” Park Benches to denounce Queerphobia, when overnight LGTBIQ+ Civil Rights Groups respond to the disappearance of public benches that had been painted (in LGBTQIA+ Colours) almost four years ago, but that some councilors of the new more conservative-leaning government have wanted to eliminate.

The city of Madrid has dawned on Tuesday a little more colorful. With the label of #BancosInvertidos in social networks, various LGTBIQ groups in Madrid celebrate the appearance of park benches, squares and sidewalks with the colors of the flags that represent sexual and gender diversity. The new painted banks are accompanied by vindictive phrases such as "The bad benches are those others", “Neighborhoods free of transphobia” and “The streets are ours.”
