i thought three months was too long, but the first month has already flown by. the last time i was here i was mourning my late father, happy to be in this great big bookshop with a sweet cat and a new friend.

this time feels different– either because i’m now an old friend or because i’m finally stepping out of the shop these days. i want to find all the books, learn all their secrets, catch all the light. and in the midst of my chase, i’ve made so many new friends that give this town its life.

The Weeds in Your Bird Seed

The Weeds in Your Bird Seed

With February comes the return of the Great Backyard Bird Count, a weekend-long, worldwide, bird counting event that Sierra and I have enjoyed participating in for the past few years. While you can choose to count birds anywhere birds are found, part of the appeal of the event is that it can be done from the comfort of one’s own home simply by watching for birds to appear right outside the…

2020: Year in Review

2020: Year in Review

This past year was certainly not the year that any of us hoped it would be. We all know why, so there’s no reason to get into it here. Point being, posts on Awkward Botany were a bit fewer and further between in 2020. My day job kept me busier than usual, and my motivation to do much else was pretty much zapped. Regardless, I’m still pleased with what I was able to put out into the world. I’m…

Every time I go to the bookshop and see the book They Both Die At the End, I have to tell someone, anyone, how bad it hurt when they both died at the end even though I knew it was going to happen because the cover says so

I want to open a 24/7 bookshop because I can’t count how many times I’ve finished reading a book at 2am and needed to read the sequel straight away, but couldn’t because all the shops were closed so I couldn’t go buy it.

book buying and simply strolling through a bookstore, exploring and touching your favourite books and having a faint thought of maybe buying them but realising you’re broke are two entirely different things.
