21.4.2017 I’m back from a hugely busy Easter holidays! I’m so sorry I haven’t been posting - I’ve made so many drafts and taken a lot of photos but not posted them! I’m back at uni now so expect much more from me again, especially as this is the lead up to my final exams! Xxx Emily

14 November 2021 // when i need a break from studying in the library i like to try and find the oldest book i can. it’s a fun game and i’ve gotten pretty good at guessing what year the book is from just by examining the binding and paper

the first pic is a police manual from 1910 and the second pic is a directory of staff at the university of edinburgh from 1884

melancholy

I’m not quite sure why, but I tend to use this word quite frequently. I feel as though sadisn’t quite broad enough to encompass the “dispirited depression” I find in melancholy. In Old English, the word more exclusively referred to an illness associated with too much black bile in one’s body, a substance which was believed to have been secreted by the spleen.

The contemporary emotional meaning appeared in the Middle English as melancolie,a direct borrowing from the Old French, which was adopted from the Ancient Greek melankholía.This word is a compound of the two terms μέλας melas “black, dark, murky,” and χολή khole“bile.”

Interestingly, although this literal translation for the Greek is “black bile,” which we can see resurfaces in the English traditions, it was used more closely to the way we use melancholynow, as “atrabilious, gloomy.”

To circle back to a previous note, we can trace back μέλας a little further to the Proto-Indo-European root mel, meaning “to grind, hit,” but also “dark, dirty.” The other half, χολή, can be attributed to ghel, meaning “gold, flourish, pale green, shine.” Although it has this seemingly pleasant definition, it is cited as being the ancestor for many languages’ terms for “bile, gall, fury, rage, disease, etc.”

There are these study tips everyone knows but almost no one uses. Maybe because you already know them and are still searching for the ultimative tip to never get bored/frustrated/stressed/etc. while studying or maybe because they seem boring. There is a reason why these tips are everywhere and you probably already know them. However here are “basic” study tips everyone should at least TRY!

1. Use a Bullet Journal or calendar to write down goals (small ones you can achieve soon), exams, tests, deadlines, etc.

2. Study at a organised and clean place. Library, at home, Café, etc.

3. Drink water/tea/juice BEFORE drinking coffee.

4. Take breaks and get some fresh air.

5. It’s better to study a little bit every day than to study all at once in one night.

6. Get enough sleep.

7. Find out which study type you are and use it!

8. Get something that makes you happy while studying. Coffee, chocolate, tea, etc.

9. Put your smartphone away. Like… really far away.

10. Listen to music. (just google which music to listen to while studying)

There is nothing stopping you from making everyday life more enjoyable. Put on that piano mix when you’re writing your essay.  Wear your cat-ear headband at work just because you love it. Take a picture of that cute flower you saw when running errands.

Life can be gruelling and there are many things you have to do, but please take the edge off of them for yourselves.

Who loves post its?!

I really like this Sticky notes set from NBS ✨

They’re easy to use in a ring binder. You could easily get one for notes, reminders, more notes, and as flags for pages (and insert some lil notes heh)! Sticky notes are one of my favorite stationeries. ♡

Happy April Fools!

It’s my new Calathea plant‘s first post! ✨ They’re also called as Prayer Plants because they raise their leaves/ fold together during the night (like praying hands). During the day, the leaves are opened/ folded down like the one in the photo ☀️
