#fanfiction problems

LIVE

In Season 2 of a show I watch, the lead female was revealed to be bisexual, and the showrunner has confirmed she’ll have a girlfriend in Season 3. I’m all for this, but I worry about fans treating it as her sole defining trait.

When writing gay characters, writers often forget that lgbt people are people first and lgbt second.

When writing gay characters, writers often forget that lgbt people are people first and lgbt second. Thus when writing them, the characters seem unnatural, forced, or shoehorned. Most of the time it’s because we’re being used as marketing tools, but sometimes it’s because people don’t know how to write in lgbt characters without seeming homophobic.

Just a piece of advice: Write people. Just write a character, with a personality, traits, a backstory, etc. Being gay doesn’t have to be a part of their overall character, just a trait they have as a person. It doesn’t add or take away from the character, because they are normal.

I don’t know how to use the internet any more.  I used to post in Naruto communities on LiveJournal all the time, but that seems to be the way of the past and I dunno where to turn when I want to discuss things.

I really need someone to geek out with me about pairings, especially this little crack pairing I’m centering a fic on— which I need feedback on for ideas.

So… If there are any ShinoIno and/or ShikaIno fans, please let your voices be heard and come chat with me about my fic :3.

Or just send me fan art <3.  Or give me a prompt for fan art and I will doodle <3.

My brain, at 3 AM: Hey, get up, you need to write.

Me, the writer:Oh,oh! Are we going to finally finish that WIP?!

My brain: What? No! Here you go: 4758 new story ideas, with very vague outlines and a poorly fleshed out cast of characters. Oh, and by the way, I’m taking a four-month vacation. You are on your own. Have fun!

promptdumpster:

Me, a writer, at 2 AM: “I’m going to sleep all night without any interruptions.”

Plot bunnies, multiplying at an alarming rate in my head as soon as I close my eyes:

I had a really good “car thought” for something I wanted to add to this chapter before posting it, so of course I can’t remember what it was now. Gonna talk a walk with some coffee and see if that doesn’t work.

Random pondering. Ever since I first started reading fanfiction (not going to get into how many years THAT has been) I’ve always read the term “miko” as “my-ko”.

It wasn’t until later on that after I’d studied Japanese that I realized it was “me-ko” and that I was mispronouncing it. Except I’d read it in my head for so long as “my-ko” that “me-ko” sounded off and always throws me out of the story when I try to read it that way.

Curious, are there any words or phrases that anyone started out reading wrong, but after finding out how it’s actually supposed to be pronounced still continued to read it the incorrect way because it sounds better in your head?

thecheerfulnecromancer:

sure, canon stuff can sometimes be pretty bad, but if you read enough fanfiction you become completely desensitised to things that are only“bad”.
