Thank you #guavatree I feel like it’s a little early for #guavas but I’m not complaining. Got 5 pieces of #guava from our tree already. It would’ve been 6 but one was already too far gone - gravity beat me to it and the yellow fruit, which would’ve been hella #sweet was already on the ground partially squished from the fall. Sadge. There are 4 more still on the tree - 2 look like they’re over ripe and will probably fall to the ground too. They’re way too high for me to get to even if I stand on a step stool especially given my shoulder issues. Mom’s been enjoying the guavas. #nomnomnom #fruit #harvest #garden #backyardgarden #fruits #masarap #foodporn #lategram

Recipe: Lime and chili roasted pumpkin seeds.

I posted this recipe way back in 2012, but I recently made it again and updated the photography on the original entry (which also explains how to properly save pumpkin seeds, if you’re interested).  This is a really easy recipe, and it has just the right amount of spiciness (you can omit the cayenne pepper if you prefer a bit milder flavour).

It’s almost that time of year again when we harvest the rows of turmeric.

Guests attending in October of 2019 will help with harvesting turmeric.

Algy thoroughly enjoyed his wind-driven ride in the old downy birch tree, but after a while he began to feel hungry again, for he had only managed to eat a few rowan berries before the wind had defeated him.

Fortunately there was a handsome cotoneaster growing close to the birch, and it was absolutely smothered in beautiful red berries which the other birds had not yet removed. A single hop and a flutter took Algy into the centre of the bush, where, seating himself comfortably, he began to eat a very hearty lunch, reflecting the while on Nature’s generosity towards fluffy (and other) birds.

Algy was inevitably reminded of John Keats’ famous Ode, but despite the mellow fruitfulness which was so abundantly evident in his assistants’ garden this year, other aspects of the poem did not quite seem to fit the character of autumn in the wild west Highlands. Algy guessed that the young poet had had a more southerly clime in mind, for he knew that even back in Mr. Keats’ day the Hebridean coast and islands of Scotland were known for their stormy autumn weather. Algy recalled that entries for September days in James Boswell’s 1773 diary The Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides with Samuel Johnson (published in 1785) were full of observations such as “It was a storm of wind and rain; so we could not set out“… and very little seemed to have changed in that respect as the centuries had passed…

However, the poem conjured up a splendid vision of plenty, albeit in a mythical land of warm sunshine, and Algy was happy to recite it for the benefit of the other birds while he munched the ripe red berries. Mr. Keats had got one thing right at least: the red-breast was indeed whistling from a garden croft, and Algy was thrilled to be hearing his wee friend’s song once again:

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
For Summer has o'er-brimm’d their clammy cells.

Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store?
Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find
Thee sitting careless on a granary floor,
Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind;
Or on a half-reap’d furrow sound asleep,
Drows’d with the fume of poppies, while thy hook
Spares the next swath and all its twined flowers;
And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep
Steady thy laden head across a brook;
Or by a cyder-press, with patient look,
Thou watchest the last oozings hours by hours.

Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they?
Think not of them, thou hast thy music too -
While barred clouds bloom the soft-dying day,
And touch the stubble-plains with rosy hue;
Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn
Among the river sallows, borne aloft
Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies;
And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn;
Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft
The red-breast whistles from a garden-croft;
And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.

[Algy is quoting the famous poem To Autumn by the early 19th century English poet John Keats.]

Mabon Prayer

We thank you Oh Gods for the abundance of which we have received on this harvest. We are grateful for the lives and relationships that have positively and warmly affected our life this year. We ask that as we journey into the darkness, your light will continue to shine in our lives. When the darkness and cold surround our bodies, we ask that your guidance and love bring warmth to our souls. We thank the earth, wind, and spirits for the bringing of the seasons as we embrace Autumn. In your names we say this prayer. Thank you.

Non- Secular Meditation

For the abundance which we have received this harvest, we are thankful. We are grateful for the lives and relationships that have positively and warmly affected our life this year. As we journey into the darkness, may we find light. As the cold and darkness surround our bodies, may we find love and warmth. We thank the earth, wind, and spirits for the bringing of the seasons as we embrace Autumn. Thank you.

What is it?

It’s a Pagan holiday celebrating and giving thanks to earth.  (AKA sorta basically the pagan’s version of American Thanksgiving without all the genocide and football.)  Also recognizing that the Light will be fading soon and the Dark half of the year will be starting.

image

When is it this year?

Saturday September 22nd 2018

How do I celebrate?

Well you can celebrate anyway you like. There are some main components here:

Giving Thanks

Being around people you love

Appreciating all that you have

Food :)

I generally celebrate by hanging out with friends, making a big dinner, and being outside if at all possible.

Here is a list of things you could do:

Apple Picking

Go to a local farmers market, purchase (if you can) locally grown food to celebrate the harvest and end of growing season. ((grocery stores are fine too!))

Cook a meal with lots of veggies. THEY ARE GOOD FOR YOU! EAT THEM. :D

Make apple dumplings or any sweet fall tasting treats.

Craft! Make a collage of your favorite fall things. Draw a leaf. idk. Do something that makes you happy.

Call a friend and thank them for something they have done for you. or just talk.

Go for a walk. Smile like a loon at nature. She’ll appreciate it.
