TRUMP MAY SEEK TO CHANGE PRESIDENTIAL SONG

WASHINGTON (AP) – It’s one of the most recognizable songs in American history, but when President Donald Trump deplanes Air Force One or enters the room at ceremonial events later this year, the familiar strains of “Hail to the Chief” may not accompany him.
Sources close to the president last week said Trump was considering a change in the traditional fanfare associated with nearly every president since Martin Van Buren. The reason for the request was unclear.
“Trump has a background in entertainment,” said Dr. John Wasserman, director of the New England Center for Law and Public Policy at Greenwich University in Worcester, Mass. “Think about ‘The Apprentice’ or ‘Celebrity Apprentice.’ When you hear the theme, you know what you’re getting. You’re not going to hear that song and think of ‘The Golden Girls.’
“Donald Trump, the entertainer, wants to be his own man. ‘Hail to the Chief’ is associated with the presidency, not the individual. Trump likely wants something that will be associated not with the office, but with the individual behind it.”
While there is no official indication what would replace the ceremonial song, sources say “Entrance of the Gladiators,” a march written by Czech composer and military band conductor Julius Fucik in 1897, is a top choice.
“The president wants America’s enemies to know we are a nation of gladiators,” said a White House aide, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “If you pose a threat to the U.S., there will be consequences.”
Trump would not be the first president to eschew “Hail to the Chief.” In 1882, President Chester A. Arthur temporarily replaced it with “Presidential Polonaise,” written by noted composer and Marine Band leader John Philip Sousa.
The most recent president to request a change in the official song was Jimmy Carter, who, like Trump, largely was considered a political outsider. Carter preferred low-key entrances to the pomp and circumstance affiliated with the song. His official appearances took place without musical accompaniment until he succumbed to public pressure and reinstated the tradition during his final two years in office.
“Hail to the Chief” was written in 1812 by British composer James Sanderson. The first record of its being performed at a presidential event occurred in 1828, when John Quincy Adams attended the ceremonial opening of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. The Marine Band played the song during the inauguration of President Martin Van Buren in 1837 and has performed it at every presidential inauguration since, including Trump’s last month.
The tradition is so ingrained in the U.S. that the Confederate States of America adopted it for ceremonies involving Confederate President Jefferson Davis during the Civil War. Its association with the Confederacy may be another reason for Trump’s consideration of a replacement.
Even if “Hail to the Chief” is temporarily retired during Trump’s time in office, the song would not disappear completely. Officially, it still could be played, for example, at state funerals for former presidents. It also likely would be reinstated in time for the inauguration of Trump’s successor, who would have the option of continuing the tradition.
Because performances of the song at presidential events fall under the auspices of the Marine Band, an order from the Department of Defense would be necessary to make the change official. It is unclear when, or if, Trump will meet with Secretary James Mattis to make that request.

Lately I’ve received a few snarky comments from random internet scolds, calling my particular brand of amateur-hour smut “sexist” and “derogatory”. This criticism irritates me to no end, for a few reasons:
1). Because shaming people for what are clearly fantasies is sooo 1950s;
2). No fantasy, as long as it involves consenting adults over the age of 18, should be labelled “derogatory”; and
3). Because in the 99% of the time I am not posting dirty pictures or writing low-grade sex words I take feminism very fucking seriously.
On the first point, imagine the nerve of being on Tumblr, a pansexual Wild West of furries, giantess worshipers, graphic images of people fucking sentient rainbows, gay muscle erotica, Land Before Time slash fiction, and hundreds of thousands of other niche fetishes I don’t even have the imagination to think of, and being judgemental of what other people are into. So you don’t think busty, lactating, and/or pregnant women are attractive? Great; enjoy the 87 quadrillion other pieces of porn out there that have nothing to do them and leave those of us who do find them hot alone.
Secondly, the idea that some kinks are reflective of our entire personalities or somehow reflect our “true intentions” is the same kind of regressive, puritanical shit-thinking that conservatives use when they blame video games for school shootings. Fantasies are just that, pretend situations we like to play out in our heads because they make us horny. Just because I fantasize about turning my partner and all of her friends into my own personal pregnant harem doesn’t mean I actually want it to happen (my insurance wouldn’t cover all of their deliveries!) any more than guy writing My Little Pony stories wants to fuck a horse in real life; or more seriously, it doesn’t mean any of the huge numbers of women with rape fantasies want to be sexually abused.

Without giving too much away about my real life, I’ve spent my entire career working in fields related to women’s rights, including fighting for abortion rights at a major pro-choice organization you definitely have heard of (and yes, I’m acutely aware of the irony). I’m engaged to a wonderful woman who is also a corporate big-shot who makes far more money than me and I couldn’t be prouder of her. Beside the fact I’m human and I naturally wish everyone would get what I’m lucky to have, I’ll tell you why I do care.
I have friends in Ukraine. None of them have left or plan to do so. It’s their home and even though at least one of them has relocated, talking people out of returning home because it’s not safe, knowing damn well how it feels to miss your home, if it’s in the middle of a whirlwind or not, is not something I got prepared for. So I understand.
I have friends in southeast Asia. I would argue about how the palm oil is bad with anyone but them. Because they know. They do. But at the same time, they know that we have been going down this environmentally bad path for too long and cutting it off would make many of their fellow citizens fall into extreme poverty, the economy would fall apart and it’d be mainly the ordinary people who would suffer. So I understand.
I have friends in the US who are genuinely afraid of the prolife movements and feel sad when they hear how much we learn in our schools. The “stupid Americans” stereotype has made us mock the wrong people, those who became victims to the insufficient education system. So I understand.
I have friends in southeastern Europe. I have a friend in Azerbaijan. I have friends that are children of emigrants, that want to study abroad but don’t have finances, friends that are forced into some religion, friends that have never felt plight in their country, yet they’re not happy. Friends that are being told by ignorant people that they don’t understand their own history.
So I understand. I have opened my heart to people who are different from me, yet very similar and we talk a lot.
Before I met them, I had no idea what the world is like, that it’s so full of problems that get pushed aside. That we’d rather complain about how our problems are what we should focus on the most when some are dying for their ethnicity, religion, can’t find a job because of something their leader did and they speak against, are dependent on the brands we all know and love quite literally with their lives.
I decided to take the time to understand them. Because to understand is to love and to love is to understand.
