When I need hope I always find it in nature, it’s resilience and wonder. Whiteness and capitalism makes us believe we are at odds with the natural world and not a part of it, that we must subdue it and not live in harmony. It’s interesting for me to look at some of these excerpts from my poems and recontextualize the lines in our current moment—this is from my poem “Along the Spent Horizon”, a poem specifically about personal grief, but it is of course much more than that and when I isolate my own lines I am easily reminded of this. There are so many ends and beginnings, and every moment of history brings us to our present moment. Thinking about the new world we must make together, what we must leave behind, what we must take with us, what articulation of our pasts we require to give language to our present and future lives. There is no easy way… no, and that’s why we must do this work of documentation and articulation and interpretation, to hold the many truths for our many selves. I’m rambling now, but if we are to make a new beginning we must contend with our endings and know how and why we got there, here, by the roads we did. A new world is possible and it is owed. Another excerpt from my poem “Just Yesterday” in my book “The Only Worlds We Know”. I wrote this piece after someone commented on my fb page years ago “I love your work, but it’s so sad-why don’t you write happy poems”. There is much joy in the word and there is much ugliness,
In and around us all and we do no favors to shy from it, to speak softly about hard things. To pretend the world is soft so that your path through it feels easier requires that the path for others remains difficult, unjust, dangerous, violent until it becomes unimaginable, and when we can no longer imagine something we cant believe believe it, and all emotion and actions requires belief, requires imagination. I am no master in this art of love. Yet, every time I see you, my heart contracts, my lungs forget to make oxygen, my hands shake like some bird struggling to get out of a cage, my legs go limp like marshmallows and my soul shatters only to get glued up again. I try not to show how badly I want you, how strongly I adore you. When you play with your raven-coloured hair, I get mesmerized by the beauty of it. When you smile with your eyes, I hold myself back from touching you. You are fire, my darling. And like a moth, I am drawn to you. You are the sky, and I am an injured bird. I see you talking to the moon at nights and I can’t help but wonder how lonely you must be. In these past few years, I have learnt things about you that no one knows. How you like your space, how delicate your hands are, how much obsessed you are with the colour olive, how you like your tea cold and not hot (I question you for that every day), how you like to go on the roof once everyone is asleep and gaze at the moon, for you think only she can understand how lonely you actually are, how you smile when someone mentions any great poet, like you know all of his works line by line, word by word, how you have this diary that you carry around everywhere– to cafes, to bookstores, to that sunset point that you adore so much and finally, how you carry infinite love in your heart, that has now started to turn into grief. Oh, my dear love, oh my world, I would light myself up on fire if you were cold, I would serve my soul on a plate to you, if you were hungry, I would become a paper, if you ever craved to write. Oh, the things I would do for you are indescribable and unspeakable. Just know, if all the red vanishes from this world, I would pour my blood in a glass for you to paint.

To any fic writers who worry they are wasting their time… I read a fic for a relatively small and inactive fandom about three years ago. And there was one specific scene where a character watched another dancing like an idiot to a beyonce song and it was so sweet and loving that even now years later I have that song on one of my spotify playlist so every once in a while it will play and remind me of that fic, and every time it does I smile and feel a little happier.
The stats on a fic will never really tell you if your writing touched someone. There’s no numerical way to show you what impact you made. Maybe you are wasting time, or maybe you are writing something that someone will remember for a long time, something that will never fail to make them smile.
