saddayfordemocracy:

International Safe Abortion Day!

Abortion must be SAFE!

Legal abortion saves the lives of millions of women,

Abortion must be legalized EVERYWHERE!

28 September marks International Safe Abortion Day. For this year’s international day of action, stakeholders around the world are coming together behind the call “Make Unsafe Abortion History”.

Access to safe abortion is time-sensitive essential health care. It is included in numerous international, regional and national legally binding treaties – providing access to safe abortion is imperative for women and girls to achieve their human and reproductive rights.

Unsafe abortion remains a preventable public health tragedy and a violation of women and girls’ human rights. It accounts for 13% of global maternal mortalities, with hundreds of thousands of survivors living with long-term complications, including infertility and chronic pain.

With121 million unintended pregnancies each year – and few countries with legal to safe abortion – too many women and girls who do not want to become parents are forced to remain pregnant. This not only represents a denial of their autonomy, but it may also have serious consequences for their mental health and access to opportunities to achieve their life goals.

For many women, this is so unacceptable that they are forced to place themselves in extreme danger by undergoing unsafe abortions. We know it is women and girls who are often already marginalised – such as those living in poverty and rural areas – who pay the greatest toll and are at the highest risk of unsafe abortion, as well as maternal mortality and morbidity.

Originally “Campaña 28 Septiembre” (or “Campaign of September 28”), the day of action was declared official in 2011 by the Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights, and renamed in 2015. The new name, “International Safe Abortion Day”, took aim at unifying the different participating organizations and their respective political aims.

The history of this day is rooted in slavery in Latin America and the Caribbean, specifically in the concept of the “free womb”. “Free womb” laws were enacted for slave women who had been killing their children after birth to spare them from a life of slavery. The law ensured that children born to slave women would be considered free from birth; before the law was put into place, children born to slave mothers were automatically considered the property of the slave owner. The day of action was adopted by many groups to promote universal access to safe abortions and education about reproductive health.

It’s here.

The season of bare chested men.

It happened just the other day, Sunday. That blisteringly hot Sunday, the 8th of May, when we had our first glimpse of summer after our long, long winter. Wasn’t it wonderful?

See, I was at work, actually. It wasn’t too bad. I walked to work in the sun, had lunch in the sun, and walked home in the sun. I saw the sun. I even had the next day off, and I grabbed that with both hands. But it’s the Sunday I’m here to talk about.

I was in full uniform: my polo shirt, my long black trousers, my (Christmas) socks, and my sensible black shoes. I was a bit on the warm side, definitely. But, you know, propriety in the work place and all that.

Then it walks this guy and his family. He’s dressed for the weather. Or not dressed. In he walked to my place of work wearing shorts, sandals, and nothing else. Absolutely nada.

Now, I have no problem with showing skin. Show it, or don’t, that is absolutely fine with me. Your body, your rules. I may not particularly want to see a fifty-something hairy man’s chest, but I’m going to leave him to it and give him kudos for being bold enough in his own skin to do that. Wish I was.

But yes, that’s the thing. I would absolutely love to go topless in the heat. Every time I see a topless man enjoying the sun in a public place, my brain shouts “SAME, BRO”

Except, of course, I can’t. Because apparently my topless self would be public indecency. My breasts, really not much bigger than this man’s pair on Sunday, are indecent. Wearing them bare would cause outrage, covering the offending appendages just enough to keep cool is sexual.

I just want to cool down. And to have equal rights to my own body, whatever.

Also, maybe if I have to cover my breasts, maybe that guy should have covered that topless pin-up-girl tattoo? Because that just doesn’t seem fair.

Tré Seals, “Save Your Breath,”

Part of a climate-related project in the run-up to COP26′s “Do the Green Thing’s The Colour of the Climate Crisis”.

Taking place at Glasgow’s Pipe Factory but existing as a permanent digital space, the exhibition brings together the work of 24 black creatives and creatives of colour.

The work explores climate injustice – the idea that black people, indigenous people and people of colour are most affected by the climate crisis (and sometimes least responsible for it).

Data visualisation artist Mona Chalabi, Pentagram partner Eddie Opara, and type designer Tré Seals have all contributed.

You can view the projects at the exhibition website.

Photographs of three international border walls: the American-Mexican, Hungarian-Serbian-Croatian, and Berlin walls.

Milach’s sharply observed, perceptive images raise questions about how the physical presence and functions of border walls impact our sense of identity and memory.

“Mexico, Mexicali 11.2019 Construction of the new border wall between US and Mexico. On February 23rd 2018, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office published The Final Report on Border Wall Mockup and Prototype Test. It presents, amongst other, various breaching and scaling tests of the eight future border wall prototypes proposed by Homeland Security in response to Donald Trump’s Executive Order #13767. The prototypes were nothing else, but a demonstration of power. They were not integrated into the new structure of the border wall that had been gradually replacing the old recycled Vietnam War helicopter landing panels. The project reflects upon the design of geographical and political division. It is dedicated to architecture of control and its impact on local landscape and urban structures.” (© Rafał Milach / Magnum Photos),

Happy International Day Against Homophobia !

We are happy and proud to announce that a large consultation with LGBTQI+ organisations worldwide has identified the theme for the 2022 edition of the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia:

“Our Bodies, Our Lives, Our Rights”

A great theme under which many forms of advocacy are possible: claiming our rights to live our sexualities and to express our gender(s) freely, but also demanding to be from physical violence, from conversion so-called “therapies” to forced sterilisation of Trans and Intersex people.

A theme that reminds us that many of us across the world live LGBTQI-phobias in their very flesh every day and that our bodies are being abused, ruining our lives.

Our bodies are our lives. And we have a right to live free and in dignity!

“As nurses we have to understand that our patients aren’t all going to fit in these neat little boxes that society has designed for them.”

I just had the opportunity to attend Jennifer Detchemendy’s session on Providing Safe, Sensitive Care to the LGBT(Q) Community. While I was aware of the issues the LGBT(Q) population encounters in regards to healthcare, I did not realize just how staggering the levels of discrimination were. A study in 2015 showed that 28% of transgender patients postponed seeking healthcare because of the fear of discrimination based on their previous healthcare encounters. 19% of those who did seek care reported being refused treatment because of their transgender or gender nonconforming status. In addition to fear of discrimination, seeking care is also delayed or difficult because of fears of breaches of confidentiality with HCPs, lack of partner benefits, prejudicial policies and procedures at both the organizational level and state level, a lack of LGBT health care providers, and being a subject of physical and/or verbal abuse by healthcare workers.

This should outrage all of you. Nurses need to be educated on these disparities, how to reduce these disparities, respecting the uniqueness of EVERY patient, and the importance of LGBT cultural humility. I appreciate Jennifer and NTI for getting the ball rolling on this education and pushing for creating a welcoming and judgment Free environment for our LGBT(Q) patient population.

This holiday season we are celebrating by sharing some organizations we are passionate about and our initiatives to promote them.

For Day 6 of the 12 Days of Giving, we are shining a light on @gather4justice:

The Gathering for Justice’s mission is to build a movement to end child incarceration while working to eliminate the racial inequities that permeate the justice system. With all that is going on in the world - take the time to take a stand, and make people listen. We must all come together to make a difference. Be involved, be BOLD.

From our Founder & Creative Director @stacyigel in a blog post from June 1st, 2020:

“Luis Hernandez is one of our incredible AMBASSADORS, is the Founder of Youth Over Guns & the Head of Youth Leadership at the Gathering for Justice. We have worked with Luis on many initiatives, together we joined forces on this panel I moderated “Art, Activism, and Impact” & we have supported the organizations he is a part of for the past two years. I asked him if his team at the NY Justice League needed support at this time, therefore - we have donated today to support their work. Learn more about what they are doing at this time to help create change here. Please follow Luis Hernandez to see more of his work, he is truly an incredible person."

Our F*CK SILENCE & F*CK RACISM Unisex T-Shirts are in support of this organization.
