Hello everyone! It’s been a very long time! The main admin of this tumblr hasn’t posted in an abnormal amount of time, and I was only here for a little bit to help her.

With that being said, I am going to be posting a lot more, but have no way of editing the tumblr or anything since I’m just a member.

What would everyone think if I made a new one and posted in both places? You could message me there and I could do fun activities!

Answer below!?

One of our partners, Blue Nation Review, has ponied up to send 100 activists to Netroots Nation for free!

Every year, we offer scholarships, volunteer opportunities and discounted rates in an effort to make sure money isn’t a barrier for attendance. BNR’s generous donation will allow an additional 100 people to receive a complimentary full access pass to the conference this July 16-19 in Phoenix.

Interested in applying? Click here to fill out the short application.

With BNR’s help, we hope to bring in more youth organizers, more local activists working on issues like immigration and social justice, more individuals from the Native American community, and others who can make the conversations at Netroots even more enriching.

We’ll be rolling out winners in several rounds, but the application is open now.

Just click here and fill out the application for your free pass to Netroots Nation this summer. Or, forward this to someone who might be interested in joining us for our tenth annual conference.

Good luck!

In its pilot year, the fellowship program brought together 17 fellows who spent their summers working with 7 organizations in 7 cities across the country.

The fellowship program will run from June to August 2015. Fellows will be placed with a community-based organization, where they will spend at least 10 weeks, working with the organization, immigrant leaders, and the local community. Check out the 2015 host sites.

Fellows will have the opportunity to develop their skills from grassroots fundraising, outreach and education, organizing, and language skills. Fellows will also deepen understanding of community organizing and civic engagement. Our Braided Bread

The pandemic has made it difficult and sometimes scary for family and friends to gather around the same table to enjoy not just a delicious meal together, but the nourishment of one another’s company. In this beautiful essay, Benjamin Dubow reflects on the process of baking challah each week for his Friday evening Shabbat meal using a sourdough starter lovingly called “Orlando,” a living, breathing being that evolves as Dubow experiments with his recipe. Come for the bread, stay for the story, and revel in the fellowship and community.

Orlando and I have been working on this challah recipe since we moved to Ames two summers ago. I started with other recipes, including my sister’s and Joan Nathan’s, and tasted what they were about. Then, we tinkered.

To make the bread more tender, I’ve added more oil, a bit more sugar, a couple more eggs — and good ones at that. I try to use the best eggs I can find, eggs befitting a holy bread. The ones I get from Ron & Kristine up in Hubbard from chickens raised on Central Iowan pasture beam with sunlight transmuted into liquid gold. The yolks are nearly orange (the product of their foraged, insect-heavy diet) and color the dough so bright a yellow it looks as though I’ve added turmeric. Now, when I make challah with other eggs — even the nice ones I sometimes get from the co-op when my poultry people are out — the dough looks sad and wan by comparison. Unilluminated.

Then, of course, there is the added component of Orlando, whose presence in this Sabbath bread brings home for me the concept of shalom, though I can’t tell you exactly why that is the case. (Shalom means peace, shalom means welfare.) Only that the feeling I get when we bake together, and especially when we bake challah together, is the same sort of feeling I get when I’m home with my family for Shabbos. (Shalom means wholeness, means harmony.)  This, too, I cannot quite describe. Just that I feel a particular warmth in my heart and stomach, cheeks and toes. (Shalom is also used as a salutation — on the Sabbath, for instance, we say: Shabbat shalom.)

I think we’re pretty darn close to where it wants to be. In distinction to our usual sourdough loaf, our challah has a soft crust (though it still could be even softer) and a finer, closer crumb, the lattice of strands more braided pillow than agglutinated web.

On a recent shift, I had an adorable little 3.5yo bean who was loving her distraction bubbles while we applied an upper extremity splint for her fracture. She was having an absolute blast, dancing around and chasing her bubbles… unfortunately for us we were chasing her in turn, but overall she ended up having a very enjoyable splint application experience

On my last shift we had a little 3yo bean with a cutaneous abscess that required an incision and drainage. He was extremely unimpressed with me as I did the exam, assessed with POCUS, and applied the topical anaesthetic… Then, as we were doing the procedure, he was essentially screaming the whole time. Interestingly… he was not really screaming in pain, just in rage.

“I just wanted a brownie!!” he wailed. (We had tried to appease him with a popsicle but it was a no-go.)

“We are almost done buddy! You are doing so great, you’re so brave.”

“NO! I AM NOT BRAVE!! LET GO OF ME AND GIVE ME A BROWNIE!”

“We will fix up your [skin] real quick and then you get to go home for a brownie.”

“I DON’T LOVE THIS!” he yelled.

To be honest, I was a little stunned because it was just such an endearing thing for him to say. I looked at his dad, whose eyes were crinkled in silent laughter as he tried to soothe his son.

“One day your dad will probably tell you about this,” I said as we applied a dressing. “Maybe it’ll be when you graduate high school and he’ll tell you about how you got through all this for your brownie.”

His dad pulled him in for a cuddle and whispered over his kiddo’s shoulder, “Oh, I’ll definitely remind him about ‘I don’t love this!’.”

Rachel recently used the analogy (METAPHOR? KY SCHOOLS TAUGHT ME THINGS I SWEAR) that life can be a feel like a circus act of spinning plates in the air. All the tasks and goals we balance in grad school are different plates, and we also want to keep ourselves and our relationships healthy and spinning. This blog is about our life, but as scientists our work is a large part of the equation. The…
