I think what people dont realize is that Snape is a complex well-written character, who has a 3 dimensional personality, the depth of which cannot be encompassed by a singular word like ‘good' or 'asshole’ , the latter of which is mostly used by tumblr to completely disregard everything else regarding his character
First of all, Snape WAS brave, you can try to deny that, you can argue with me over that but you cannot deny the fact that he had the guts to lie to Voldemort’s face, to go behind his back.You can also not deny the fact that the man played a pivotal role in Harry’s protection and in winning the war.He was a man who knew that he wasn’t going to make it out alive, but he came to terms with that and put himself in grave danger for the sake of the greater good
Secondly, people seem to confuse 'being a caring teacher’ with ’ being a good teacher’ ,and though Snape wasnt caring or loving, he was a good teacher. He taught his students properly, prepared them for their examinations and passed on his knowledge and he was fair. People seem to quote him taking away points from gryffindor for no reason, but at no point did he unjustly did so, I mean my teachers reprimand me from answering without being called on, doesn’t mean they are assholes.Also if I remember correctly he wasn’t the one who gave his fave house just enough points at the eleventh hour to make them conveniently win the house cup.
third, no matter what you say his dislike for Remus and Sirius was justified, they put his life in danger ffs, not to mention the continuous bullying they subjected him to even before he called lily a mudblood. i donot however agree with him revealing Remus’s secret but i will discuss that further down
Fourth, please stop using his actions as a student in your arguments against him, when you oh-so-readily wave of the mauraderer’s actions because they were 'kids’. Yes Snape was a little shit, but he was a child moreover he was a child who had not only never had the best family life but he was constantly being bullied by his peers *cough*jamesandsirius*cough*, not only that but his own house alienated him because of his friendliness towards lily, he didn’t belong anywhere, he didn’t fit in and he was scared and young, he made bad decisions but if you can forgive Draco you can give him the benefit of doubt.
with that being said, I dislike the man deeply but he wasn’t inherently bad just childish. His treatment of Harry was out of petty, his hatred for Neville was a product of him not being able to deal with his own loss and wanting to be able to blame someone else, and his treatment of Lupin and Sirius was a childhood grudge held which he held onto for too long because he had nothing else to grasp to.He was jealous of what others had around him, when he himself had noone to call his own, which is why i believe he held onto Lily till the very end because she was the only one who had been familiar to him
so yes, he might have been an asshole, he was definitely a bit (a lot) pathetic but at the same time he was so much more
Summary: After four years of living abroad with a new life, Regulus has to return to London to war that he doesn’t want to be in. The life that he has built after a horrible childhood is threatened. Now its time to fight back or lose it all.
When the door opened, the breath once again caught in Regulus’ chest. What was going to say to Sirius? Their conversations had been very limited. It was mostly Sirius begging Regulus to come home and Regulus saying no. Now they were going to be living in the same house together for the first time since they were teenagers and Regulus had no idea what they were going to talk about.
Part of him hoped Sirius wouldn’t bring up their childhood because that was the last damn thing that Regulus wanted to talk about. Another part of him did. The still bitter and angry part that Regulus kept under lock and key wanted to tell Sirius how angry (and heartbroken) he was that Sirius chose to leave. Regulus wanted to tell Sirius how much it hurt him to see his older brother living his best life with James Potter.
Sirius acted as if Regulus no longer existed after the night he left. He would walk right past Regulus as if he were just another face in the crowd. Sirius acted as if Regulus wasn’t the person that he sat trembling with huddled in a closet when their mother was on a warpath and looking for a punching bag. None of that seemed to matter anymore. Regulus was nothing to Sirius and that was how Regulus saw himself…nothing.
I’m not the person that I used to be nor is he…I need to give him a chance.

I remember first reading ‘Prisoner of Azkaban’ on a rainy day. I had never been so touched by a character until I read about Remus Lupin. His kindness, wit, and total respect for his students is partly the reason I am a professor today. He made teaching less frightening, honestly.

Most people have probably never seen the 1988 film For Keeps?, starring Molly Ringwald and Randall Batinkoff. It wasn’t a big hit. The acting is pretty good throughout, and the subject matter was very daring for the late 1980s, but it comes off saccharine and rather moralizing.
However! Guys!
Molly Ringwald was 19-20 years old during the filming and release of For Keeps? Her character is pregnant. And her baby-daddy is played by an actor who was also19-20 years old!
Granted, this is 8 years too late, fashion-wise, because Harry was born in 1980. For actors the right age at exactly the right time, you could watch the original version of Fame.
For Keeps?is useful, though, because it’s interesting to see a redheaded actress who (at the time) had little-if-any cosmetic surgery at exactlythe same age as Lily Potter when Harry was born.
I often think HP creators–and I include JK Rowling in this–tend to picture Lily and James much more mature than they actually were. They were 19 when Lily got pregnant. This is what real (strikingly gorgeous) 19-year-olds look like:

My poor man is dodging girls left right and centre. It’s gotten to the point he’s seriously considering investing in one of those giant muggle hamster balls.
