Nature loves courage. You make the commitment and nature will respond to that commitment by removing impossible obstacles. Dream the impossible dream and the world will not grind you under, it will lift you up. This is the trick. Hi All. I’m not as active on here so if your interested please be sure to follow me on my insta. @VincentCoviello.  Anyways,  I just started re-watching Avatar the Last Airbender and goodness does it holdup. It has to be one of my all time favorite animated series. The world creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko  conjured up is one of the best examples of world building I’ve seen. This series is a beautiful mix of real world philosophy, beliefs and customs mixed with fantasy. If you are following me, I am going to assume you’ve seen it. If not, I highly recommend it and Avatar The Legend of Korra.

I was particularly fond of the Spirit World and Hei Bai is right up my alley in terms of design. So here is a quick rendition in my style.

While spirit work is really a category of its own, it’s important to have a basic understanding of what local spirits are and how they function. Having the ability to detect spiritual energy and identify it’s source is a great way to get started. I’ll start off by saying the spiritual realm is virtually endless, but there are some common “categories” spirits can be placed in.

Every culture has recognized the spiritual realm in some form, but for this purpose, I’m going to break them down into a few standard categories. I’ll be talking specifically about local spirits in the sense that these beings are not omnipresent. They move through the world far differently than us, but they still are required to travel or may be bound to a specific location.

  • Natural Spirits (elements)
  • Dream Spirits
  • Non-Natural Spirits
  • Ghosts

Natural Spirits

Natural spirits are, quite simply, those that reside in nature. Their energy is of the earth and its elements. Natural spirits come in many forms and shapes and are mostly found in large parks and other areas that still retain their natural form. These spirits are like wild animals, and should be treated with reverence and respect. They will never enter your home, and if you respect their natural environment you may be rewarded with a visit from them. They come in many forms, often depending on where they are found. They may appear as an animal, or a special type of plant not usually found in the area.

Dream Spirits

Dream spirits exist only in the dream realm. You can access them through methods of astral projection and lucid dreaming. They will often act as guides or keepers of wisdom, and will often keep a form that you would be willing to accept. Some see these spirits as loved ones who have passed away, or maybe a talking animal. If you begin learning lucid dreaming, try to identify a character that appears in your dreams often. They will not be the focus of the dream, but if you are able to break into a lucid state and approach them they may reveal themselves to you.

Non-Natural Spirits

Non-natural spirits are those who reside in this world but are not of this world. They take many, many forms and often perform specific functions. Non-natural spirits will most often not contact you or take you seriously in any way unless you have something to offer. This can be used to your advantage, though. For example, I use a non-natural spirit for protection. The way our agreement works is that they will alert me to the presence of a supernatural threat, and be able to feed on that threat without exception. This works well both ways since I am protected, and the spirit is getting the energy it needs. Use caution when interacting with non-natural spirits, as they may have their own motivation on approaching you. Keep things very specific, and don’t make any agreements until you are fully comfortable with them.

Ghosts

Ghosts are layman's terms for ancestral spirits. They were at one point human, and for some reason stay behind. Some just want to live as they did when they were alive, but others have different motivations to saying such as seeing a loved one accomplish something, or to protect them. The reason I use the term ghost is that in order to work with them, you don’t necessarily have to be related. As long as you can connect with them on something, whether it be an actual family member, location, or any other factor, they may be inclined to assist you.

falernian:

Types of “restless” dead, relatively active ghosts likely to manifest themselves (and convenient for magical exploitation):

1.Aoroi (from αωροσ, untimely): “those dead before their time.” Those cheated of their full stint of life bitterly stayed back to haunt the land of the living of which they had been deprived. In theory anyone who died of anything other than of natural causes in old age could generate a ghost restless qua aoros, although as a class aoroi tended to be conceptualized primarily as the ghosts of children or babies.
2.Bi(ai)othanatoi (from βιαιος and θανατος, violent and death): “those dead by violence.” The battle-dead and executed criminals, although murder victims and suicides provide the bitterest ghosts in this class.
3.Agamoi (from αγαμος, unmarried): “those dead before marriage.” Both male and female ghosts could be assigned this category, although the female ones were regarded as particularly bitter, insofar as marriage and the motherhood consequent upon it were a woman’s defining rights in antiquity.
4.Ataphoi (from αταφος, unburied): “those deprived of burial.” Whatever the circumstances of death, a ghost could not achieve rest without the due funeral rights. These were importantly distinct from the mere insertion of the corpse into a hole in the ground, and indeed the concealment of a dead body in precisely this way is often presented as the chief obstacle to the peace of its soul.

In my last post, I talked about different types of spirits that witches may work with. Today, we’re going to discuss how to approach spirits and establish a working relationship.

Keep in mind that these are general guidelines, and every spirit is different. I encourage you to do your own research beyond this post, especially if you plan to work with powerful entities like deities, angels, or fairies.

Remember the Four R’s

It’s important to keep these things in mind when working with spirits:

Respect. The spirits are powerful, and you need to have a healthy respect for that power when working with them. It’s also important to respect them as individual, autonomous beings.

I’m not saying that every interaction you have with the spirits needs to be a full blown ritual with incense and chanting. (In fact, some spirits don’t care for those types of rituals.) But every interaction you have with them should be conducted with an air of respect and reverence.

What this mostly boils down to is good manners. Being polite will get you better results — and it will also keep you from being on the receiving end of spirit mischief. Proper etiquette depends on the type of spirit you’re working with, which is one reason it’s important to do your research. In general, it’s polite to make an offering, use respectful language, and thank the spirits before you leave (unless you’re dealing with fairies — some traditions say you should never thank the fae).

Respecting spirits also means respecting their desires — even if that means respecting their wish not to work with you. Not every spirit you reach out to will want to form a relationship with you, just like not every person you meet in your life will want to be your friend. When a spirit turns you down, respect their decision, politely bid them farewell, and move on.

Reciprocity. The goal of spirit work is to establish a mutually-beneficial partnership — not for one partner to serve the other. On one hand, this means that you can’t just command spirits to do your bidding without giving anything in return. On the other hand, it also means that you won’t be worshiping/honoring them without receiving some kind of boon.

This is why it’s important to make offerings to the spirits you work with. These offerings “feed” the spirits by giving them power, and a good offering will likely make a spirit more willing to work with you. Offerings are not payment for favors from spirits (it’s not quite that simple), but they are a sign that you intent to practice reciprocity in your relationship.

In general, it’s important to make an offering when you first introduce yourself to a spirit and again before you ask them for anything. But you shouldn’t only make offerings when you’re about to ask for something! How would you feel if you had a friend who only did nice things for you when they were about to ask for a favor? You’d probably start avoiding them, right? You might even get angry. To avoid this kind of dynamic in your spirit work, make regular offerings to the spirits you work with. If you’re especially close with a spirit, you may want to offer to them every day.

Relationship. The spirits are not vending machines where you put offerings in and blessings fall out. They are living, sentient beings with feelings, and deserve to be treated as such. Your relationship with the spirits you choose to work with is just that: a relationship. And like any relationship, it requires time, energy, and emotional labor.

If that sounds like more effort than you want to make, there are plenty of ways to do magic without ever working with spirits. You don’t need to do spirit work to be a witch. It may not be your thing, and that’s okay!

But if you choose to work with spirits, it’s important to remember that you are working with them as an equal partner — you’re not their boss, and they are not obligated to like you, help you, or even tolerate you. Relationships with spirits are built over time, through mutual respect and trust.

You wouldn’t drive up to your friend’s house, throw a fast-food burger at them, and then demand a special favor. Likewise, you shouldn’t just dump an offering on your altar and demand something of the spirits. Take the time to sit down with them. Talk to them. Get to know them. Put some thought into your offerings, instead of just offering the same thing every time. Spirit work is, at its core, about building an authentic relationship with the spirits we choose to include in our practice. Enjoy it.

Research. When it comes to spirits, it’s important to know exactly who (and what) you’re dealing with. As previously mentioned, the etiquette for dealing with fairies is very different from other land spirits. Different deities have different standards for their worshipers, which vary from one pantheon to the next. The way you interact with your ancestors will probably be shaped by their personalities, cultures, and values. All this is to say it’s important to know who you’re reaching out to, preferably before you reach out to them.

With deities, this is easy. Most witches who choose to work with deities will feel drawn to a certain pantheon, or even a specific god or goddess. There’s a lot of information out there about most historical pantheons, so researching them is easy. The same goes for angels, saints, demons, and even fairies.

It can be a little more difficult to do your research when you’re dealing with land spirits, spirits of place, or other less well-known figures. In these cases, it’s best to take three steps: 1.) figure out what type of spirit you’re dealing with (land spirit, animal spirit, ancestor, etc.), 2.) find out what this type of spirit is like generally, and 3.) find out how that applies to your specific spirit.

For example: you want to connect with your local land spirits. You do some research to find out how land spirits have been treated in various cultures — you find out that they’re typically benevolent, are closely tied to the natural landscape, and were often given food offerings. Then, you do some research into your local plants and animals — what form might a nature spirit take in your local environment? Would it be a huge moose with snow-covered antlers, or a magnolia tree in full bloom? Is there any local folklore in your area that could be describing a land spirit? Once you have answers to these questions, you’ll have a much better idea of how to approach the spirits and start up a relationship.

Initiating a Relationship with a Spirit

Begin by identifying who this spirit is. For example, let’s say you choose to reach out to a specific ancestor spirit — maybe a deceased grandparent. Make sure you’re familiar with the etiquette for interacting with this type of spirit so you don’t accidentally do something disrespectful. (If your Grandma hated cussing, try not to drop any f-bombs while communing with her.)

Create a special space to communicate with the spirit. This can be as simple as lighting a candle or as elaborate as setting up a special altar. If you’re reaching out to a grandparent, you might set up a small ritual space with a photo of them, any of their belongings that you have access to, and some things that they enjoyed while they were alive. These items may make the connection easier, but you don’t need them to communicate. What matters is that you’ve taken the time to create a special space for this moment. (Like all ritual spaces, it should be clean and tidy, and it’s a good idea to do an energetic cleanse beforehand.)

Make an offering. Make sure your offering is appropriate for the spirit you’re connecting to. Offerings should be made with an air of reverence — don’t just toss a bag of Doritos on your altar and expect it to be well-received.

Introduce yourself. Speak out loud. State your intention and who you are hoping to connect with.

Wait and listen. You may feel a presence or receive some kind of sign — or you may not. Just because you didn’t get a sign doesn’t mean that your offering wasn’t noticed or that you’re being ignored. You may also receive a sign several hours, days, or weeks after you first reach out. Be patient.

Say your farewells. Express your gratitude for the spirit’s presence, and let them know that you are ending your little ritual. It’s up to you whether to invite them to stick around or politely tell them to leave, but if you’re going to give a spirit permission to linger in your home you better be 1000% sure you know who they are and what their intentions with you are.

Moving Forward

As you work with this spirit, it is important to establish clear boundaries for the relationship. Be clear about what you want to accomplish by working with them, and make sure you understand what they expect from you in return.

You might want to establish a time limit: for example, maybe you’re choosing to work closely with the goddess Brigid from Imbolc to Samhain, at which point you can choose to continue the relationship or to take a step back. Or, you may choose to work with a spirit on a specific task — for example, working with the goddess Aphrodite to get back on your feet and rebuild your self esteem after a breakup. Once this task is accomplished, you may choose to form a more long-term relationship or to take a step back.

Forming a permanent or long-term working relationship with a spirit is a very big, very serious commitment, and should not be taken lightly. This goes double for anything involving a ritual commitment, such as dedication to a deity. When you make these commitments, you are choosing to make a spirit and their energy a permanent part of your life. This decision requires some very serious introspection and consideration, and should not be made impulsively.

The mage’s doors slammed open with a noisy crash as they impacted the stone of her tower walls.

She knew it! She knew something was up! The world doesn’t just go quiet for no reason. The spirit realm even less so. Something was happening. Something big.

Papers and vials went clattering off of her desk, and onto the stone floor beneath them. Her enchanted books fluttered and rustled in protest, flocking off to their respective bookshelves lining the floors up above. Ignoring the minor papercuts down her forearms resulting from their decent, Emmy searched through every remaining parchment she had layed out months prior.

“Come on… where are they?” her cosmic blue eyes frantically darted around, looking for the records. The symbols she’s seen recently and drew onto paper. The notes from her personal journal on how she’s been feeling. Signs, omens… ANYTHING that could indicate what she was looking for.

One roll of parchment flew off behind her. Two… three. It wasn’t long before a newly disorganized mess of paper, crystals, dust and ink were scattered all over her bedroom floor. None of these were it!

With a frustrated hiss, she glanced off behind her, to her bedside cabinet. One of it’s dark, heavy, alderwood drawers slightly ajar…

“Come on, I didn’t put them there did I?” But yes, she remembered now! She left her sketchbook there last night after coming home because she took a moment to remake the bed. Though she never actually slept in it, her day to day habits often did rustle the sheets just a tiny bit. Especially during her… Experiments with Vidri. With a slight chuckle, she hoisted the drawer open and yanked out her sketchbook! The shear momentum from the force she exerted to do so almost forcing it to nail her in the face! But she caught it just in time. Just before it would have broken her nose.

She was beaming now, every neuron in her body firing at once, forcing her to shiver with anticipation.

Slap! Whap! The hard leather-bound cover of her sketchbook filled the room with such sounds. The rapid flitting of turning pages blew wind into her face, and filled her nose with the distinctive earthy smell of old leather and papyrus. Her fingers stopped just towards the middle of the chronicle. There she saw them.

The skull like silhouette she saw in the fog as it passed the upper-left side of her doorframe this past hallow’s end.

The brown and shriveled leaf that passed the exact same spot a few weeks later as it fell from the canopy of trees above. The sunlight hit it in such a manor that she could make out every single detail on it.

The way the way the clouds rolled and broke apart the moonlit rainbow that ringed White Lady during the first snowy night of the winter season. There was a short note on the side of this page: It looked like the cosmology map… until they bleed into each other.

She glanced over the next page of her sketchbook briefly, her mind drawing a blank as to why she was going this far. She was still looking for something, why wasn’t i- wait!

Abruptly she darted out of her beedroom and into her lab just a floor lower. Her enchanting table still littered with glowing dusts and smoke from incense. In it’s center was a cracked leycrystal. It’s fracture uncharacteristically uniform to what these breaks normally looked like. Dim lavender energy seeped out from the seam, Emmy’s keen eyes noticing that the light within it had dulled significantly sense she’d last seen it. The more she looked at it, the more she realized the resemblance it bore to a torn piece of cloth.

When it cracked this morning, she was imbuing a shimmering silvery cloak with latent arcane power. She almost payed no mind to it. Duds were common in the world of enchanting reagents. That is why she always ordered extras… but for a brief moment, this particular crack stood out to her. She just figured she was running late to work today, and decided she’d look into it later. But now, she understood why.

image

The spirit of her twin brother Andrew didn’t make his presence known to her this past Hallows End. And while she was saddened by the event, she was more confused as to why. To her knowledge, spirits often left behind a sign for the people they were watching over when they decided to move on to the next stage of their afterlife. It was often in the form of an item that was related, and very special to them. One you could never find before, but somehow, by shear luck or a miracle, could now. Or it was in the form of a dream, a memory long suppressed of them leaving you. But not a bad memory. More… bittersweet. Or perhaps, it was something as simple as a warm embrace you felt suddenly that brought you comfort, then faded away.

No matter how they did it, you always got a loving sense that they believed you were ready to be on your own. And they would leave you with something to remember them by.

When Emmy reflected upon it though, she’d never felt anything like that in recent months. No, instead this sense of dread had always pressed upon the back of her mind, in it’s farthest, most suppressed reaches. It was almost like… he was distant. In danger, but never able to be contacted.

For a long while though, she dismissed it as the healthy dose of paranoia she always carried around with herself to keep herself cautious. She believed she was just overthinking things, and imagining the worse case scenario when none existed. As she looked back through the journal entry’s she’d written these last few months, this theme became painfully obvious to her. This whole time, her gut was telling her something was wrong. And fuck! She was right! Of all the times she had to of been… it was now? She wished it wasn’t so. But alas! The evidence was starring her right in the face this whole time!

Andrew’s ghost didn’t move on. It was in trouble! He was trying to tell her this whole time, but her logical mind prevented her from seeing it! Why did she never listen to old superstitions as a whelpling? Why!?

Why did it have to take the words of a mysterious Kaldorei she’d never met before to make her realize this!? She remembered the conversation so vividly now…

“Do you know what her end goal is?”

“Only some… what is the word? Abstract? …Balance is her goal. The balance between life and death. Between the elements.”

“… Has she noticed anything odd with the veil of late?”

“We have. And we seek an answer to what must be done about it.”

These words echoed in her mind dozens… if not hundreds of times.

“The balance is shifted. Death holds more domain than it should. The war is likely the culprit, but… something tickles at the edge of my senses that we can’t quite place.”

Emmy’s form went still, her muscles limp. But the shuddering did not cease. Slowly, she turned her head towards the scattered drawings and broken enchanting reagents, and began to arrange them in the form of a cosmology map. The moon picture with the note in the center. The skull to the upper left, the leaf to the bottom right. And the cracked crystal? Placed directly in the center, on top of the moon. What she saw shocked her.

The lines she drew to indicate the direction of the wind, the way she drew the fog… and the clouds around the moon, it all lined up. What she saw now, was the cloudy, silhouetted form of a small elven woman, and a large… humanoid titanic creature. The woman below the cracked crystal, the titan above. The crystal, a depiction of the veil. It was going to be torn apart. The dull, now purple, light of the leycrystal briefly illuminated the shape of the elven woman, and she realized then who it was. Sylvanas Windrunner.

Her mouth agape, she turned her head towards her journal to peer at her notes once more. She had to be missing something right!? She hasto be drawing conclusions from nothing! Yes! her eyes flitted to the words within the pages. But the first words she saw: “Congratulations Emmy, you figured it out.” It was an old entry, but it was about a study her brother did. The quote she pulled directly from her bother when she wrote it…

I would just like to say that y’all have some cool ass rituals to meet with your spirit guides and i just go up my funky imaginary stairs.

I am asking cause “when i go to visite them”, all of them have their own special rooms. And i am not quite sure where that is. One of them told me it’s kinda in a part of a higher dimension connected with/to me(?).

Years ago I have written a “Rise of the Guardians” fanfiction where Jack meets the Spirit of Death, who is an elderly Victorian woman called Morticia. All the other spirits avoid her because they are afraid of her but after having a good talk Jack finds out she’s not nearly as scary and cold-hearted as everyone claims.

The sketch was drawn early this year, but I never had the time or motivation to colour it until now.

As to the source of visions, traditional peoples and folk magic have always said that they emanate from an unseen realm of spirits and greater spiritual beings, that is, the gods.  Contemporary pagans and witches can attest to the reality and power of these beings. Through focused, committed trancework and journeying we can indeed reach the gods, know them and be known by them. When we shift away from normal consciousness we dive into Spirit, where everything and all beings can be known, if only we pursue our magical work diligently. It is said magic works according to karma, and so we will encounter not only our allies but our personal challenges. And so visioning is also a path of self discovery, growth, unfoldment and healing.

Remember that your INTENT is the key.  The psychological view is that visions arise as symbolic communications from dimensions of our minds beyond our everyday awareness, which may be experienced in dreams, reveries or spiritual visions. Such psychic forms were called Archetypes by the famous Swiss psychologist Carl Jung. He considered them fully as intelligent and powerful as the legendary spirits of old. Realize that our minds ARE Spirit, and are inseparable from the fullness that It is. We descend and ascend through levels and planes of being, now in our personal dreams and fantasies, now encountering divine beings, now blending mystically with realms beyond the personal. Your experiences will no doubt lead you to your own insights, your own conclusions, and your own philosophy. Whatever you may believe about this, trance and visions allow us to realize that the potential of our minds is far beyond what we have been told about ourselves. We are magical beings.   (end of series)   ( revised 3/1/22  @mysteryoftheuniverse)

Νοσοι

The Nosoi were the personified spirits of plague, sickness and disease. They were numbered amongst the evil spirits which escaped from Pandora’s jar. In most Homeric literature, however, the arrows of Apollon and Artemis were the bringers of plague and sickness rather than bands of daimones.

Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery
Midlothian, Illinois

Hidden in an array of crowded, tightly packed trees in the Rubio Woods Forest Preserve in Midlothian, Illinois is the most ghostly and eerie cemetery in the United States.

Bachelor’s Grove.

It’s so well hidden we drove past it several times. The entrance is nothing more than a distressing footpath guarded by a roped obstruction featuring a bold “closed” sign.

We thought we were too late. We had drove fourteen hours just to arrive at the close of day. It’s known that the visiting hours of Bachelor’s Grove are sunrise to sunset. That’s it. There are no exceptions. If you are discovered on the premises during nightfall you will be introduced to the Cook County Sheriff’s Department. We weren’t too anxious to get improperly introduced to the Sheriff so we acted accordingly.

Fortunately the bold “closed” sign was only for vehicle traffic. We had very limited time before the onset of darkness. We acted with haste.

Facing south of the Rubio Woods Forest Preserve parking area there are two cell site antennae across the Midlothian Turnpike. To the west of the antennae you will find the vacated footpath with the “closed” sign. If you follow the footpath you will find the cemetery in a gated patch at the end.

It’s weathered.

Worn away, beaten by vandalism and exposure to the elements. Headstones are violently broken into pieces, a number resembling only a solid rock exposed on the surface.

Some graves being from the turn of the century, just simply labeled “father” and “infant daughter”.

If you’re unfamiliar with the history of Bachelor’s Grove, the site was reported to have been a dumping ground for victims of Chicago’s organized crime families of the late 1920s through the 1930s.

Thereafter, many believed the location was practice for satanic ritual. Because of its adverse and disturbing past, visitors have had many claims of hauntings. Some being orbs of light, phantom vehicles, ghosts and animal manifestations.

We didn’t encounter any paranormal phenomena. Maybe because we weren’t on the site beyond the witching hour.

I can tell you this, you do get a pessimistic feeling and a sense of trepidation. An emotional state of dismay because of the decaying burial sites. Because of the waterlogged soil littered with headstones and untidy debris. Because of the grim, black-shaded trees outstretching its branches like hundreds of diabolical arms above the burial ground.

We made a short tour to every detectable headstone. To every apparent grave marker.

It was quiet.

Serene in a frightening way.

We paid our respects and we said good night.
