The character Leon (Jean Reno) was only written to be emotionally immature and hesitant to young Mathilda’s (Natalie Portman) constant sexual propositions so that trash human beings can feel more comfortable with openly indulging in this gross fantasy.
There are people (usually men) who always want to argue and get defensive about this. They’ll try to excuse it because it’s art (which apparently exists in a vacuum and has zero impact in this world) or they’ll just blatantly deny that there’s any hint of pedophilia with some mental gymnastics.
Sure, the movie has bad ass, visually stylish scenes for the 90s. A cold assassin moved by circumstances to care for a traumatized child and help her get revenge on corrupt law enforcement for the murder of her family is a cool, thrilling plot. Portman, at 11-12 years old, excitedly took on this role for these reasons and had to beg her parents to let her do it. This is the movie that really showed off her acting abilities and sparked her illustrious career.
Of course, some say that we should be more concerned with how a child is involved with graphic gun violence in this film than with the sexual undertones. It’s almost a fair point since our media is actually more comfortable with displaying violence than consensual, healthy images and themes of sex. But sexualizing children isn’t healthy or positive. It’s another kind of violence, that unlike the gun fight scenes, was unnecessary and didn’t really serve the central plot or the characters. (And ew, sexualizing children is just never okay.)
Mathilda’s sharp mind, affection and innate innocence despite her screwed up childhood experiences help Leon and make both of them good character studies. But instead of using a father-daughter relationship, which would have also achieved the art of the characters’ warm development and emotional depth in a grim, violent world (The Last of Us accomplishes this beautifully with critical acclaim), this movie opts for a disturbing romance between the two.
The subtext for the pedophilia isn’t at all subtle and it’s time to stop excusing or denying it. There are scenes with a prepubescent child calling a 40-something year old man her lover and declaring she wants to have sex with him. So many scenes of her flirting with him and in every one it looks like it hurts him to reject her. And there’s one scene that I’m always surprised people miss. It’s the one where Mathilda is in bed with Leon. As she leaves the bed, she’s pulling up her underwear in a way that implies she wasn’t wearing them before getting out of the sheets. The camera forces the audience to actually watch her do it so that they can see this and infer that something happened.
To validate the icky feelings I got from this movie years ago, I just found out that in the original script, Leon was supposed to see Mathilda completely naked after she gets out of a shower. And while nude she was supposed to try to seduce him into having sex again. In another cut scene, before she gets out of bed and pulls up her underwear, they’re having sex and the script describes it as beautiful love making when, really, it’s not even sex. It’s rape.This little girl, whose family had just been slaughtered and is now alone and vulnerable, ends up in the care of a lonely older man who she later engages in a romantic and sexual relationship with–and oh by the way, he also happens to be a very skilled assassin. How is that not a pedophile’s fantasy?
If the actual movie and original script aren’t enough to convince you how pedophile-friendly and awful this movie is, I also just learned something about Luc Besson, the writer and director of this cult classic.

In Germany this therapy is covered by our health care system and actually saves money and is counted as a success.

The way our system works right now, non-offending pedophiles have zero way to seek help. If they go to a therapist and say “I keep having sexual fantasies about little kids and I know it’s wrong, and I want to avoid acting on them because I know that would constitute harm to a child, please help me,” that therapist is required to report them to law enforcement. And then they will be arrested … or, more likely, monitored until they’re pushed to offend by their own isolation, and then, after a child or children are harmed, they get arrested.
It’s very difficult, verging on impossible, to seek chemical or surgical castration for no apparent medical reason in the United States. And if you go to a doctor, and say “I want to be chemically castrated because I keep having sexual fantasies about little kids and castration will help me to not harm children,” guess what that doctor is required to do?

It’s a cycle of abuse. They literally abuse because they were groomed to abuse. Pedophiles who fall into this category, having sought mental health treatment, may be able to come to terms with what happened to them, and be able to seek healthy, consenting adult relationships. Not all pedophiles fall into this category, but enough of them do that we should absolutely be addressing it as a mental health crisis.
I’m not out here saying pedophiles are woobie little darlings. They’re not. They frighten me in no small part because of my own trauma, and I find their desires disturbing. However–I have also researched enough to know that they are human beings who are capable of rehabilitation, growth, and healing, and rather than screaming about how awful they are, we should be doing what we can to help them reach a place mentally (and potentially physically, if needed/desired) where they will not offend. A non-offending pedophile who has made a commitment to remaining non-offending, and who is offered adequate support to ensure they remain non-offending, is one less pedophile we have to worry about. A non-offending pedophile who is committed to their treatment is not on the internet buying child porn. A non-offending pedophile who is committed to their treatment is not being creepy by the school gates. A non-offending pedophile who is committed to their treatment is a pedophile who can tell other pedophiles “you know, there are options.”

4 years ago I’ve worked as a babysitter in my spare time and I’ve never had trouble finding work. I guess the main reason was that I already had 2 years of work experience and was therefore trustworthy and qualified.

We understand propaganda created to promote “sex robots” serves multiple purposes –other than sales– and we intend to examine as many angles as possible.
We understand “sex robots” to be a global public health & safety concern and we intend to work to elevate this issue until every woman, man, and child understands the dangers posed to our human existence.
In addition to sex robot specific material we are working on media that explores the intersections of patriarchy, colonialism, social engineering, “queer theory”, transgenderism, transhumanism & posthumanism, eugenics, pedophilia, and sex robots.
When I was 14, I dated a 20 year old in a band and over the course of 6 years it’s ruined a lot of aspects of my life.
I broke up with him when I was 16, and tried to remain friends for years, but it never worked. I would try to hang out with him, but he was insistent about us continuing to sleep together, and no matter how many times I said no, I continued to give in. Over the years, he got increasingly weird about it. He would ask me to say that I was 14 while we were sleeping together, even though I was only 16 or 17 at the time. I suspected he was sleeping with the younger girls at his shows, because his band’s following is mostly 14 and 15 year old girls. But I had no idea what was really happening.
I’d gone to a lot of their shows, but it got harder to attend. Mutual friends were always there along with a crowd of underage girls, all singing along to songs about me. The younger crowd knew who I was, and hated me for “hurting” him. The older crowd who used to be friends with me blamed me for his affliction with younger girls, which is when I found out he was taking a lot of these underage girls home with him after his shows. He is 25 now, and still does this.
Everyone sings along, forgetting that I was a child. I was mentally, emotionally and legally too young to consent at any point in our relationship. And other adults who KNOW this is the case continue in their friendship with him, continue to show up to his shows and treated me like I was the problem for years. I have been blamed for making this man a pedophile.
I am now dating someone else, but a lot of those people are my current boyfriend’s friends and acquaintances. They now pretend they never treated me like that, like they don’t support the man who robbed me of my childhood and made me feel like my value relied on my age and my willingness to have sex.
My current boyfriend wonders why I don’t like being around his friends. The same people who are friends with a man who is (by all definitions of the law) a rapist and a pedophile. The same people who think I was the problem and not the victim.
I’m not normally very vocal about this, because when I tell people I’m told that I should have known better. I was a child. I’m still paying for my mistake and he’s still taking children home with no repercussions.
I know that it’s hard to think of your friends as pedophiles or rapists, but if you’re being told that’s the case or if you SEE it happening, don’t be silent. Don’t ignore it. Talk to your friends. Talk to the damn police.
