Spell Jar Alternatives

I’m not one to bury jars with spells, I prefer a more eco friendly option and like to use items that are natural or will break down.

I thought I’d share some of the items I use…

  • Conker Shells
  • Toilet Roll Tubes
  • Sea Shells
  • Snail Shells
  • Nut shells (walnuts are great!)
  • Seed Heads/Pods
  • Large leaves (I use fig)

All of these are safer in my mind as glass carries a risk factor especially for my hole digging son.

Items can be sealed with soy wax or twine/ribbon such as hessian, cotton or silk which will break down far easier than synthetics.

Sigils still can be painted or drawn on many of the cases.

If I know I’m going to bury a spell I like to try and incorporate flower or herb seeds (Nigella/Blessing seeds are a favourite) as when the casing breaks down the seeds will often germinate.

Advice from an hereditary witch’s grandmother: things a crone has to say

My witch of a grandmother gave me her beautiful encyclopedia on healing plants to celebrate Ostara!
I told her about my blog and she asked me to share some of her advice “for those lovely internet disciples of yours”.
No, Yeyé, that’s not how this works…

But hey! When the crone talks, you listen!

“A jar of glass keeps away envious spirits and people who want to hurt you.”

“Everything dead deserves to be honored.”

“Strings of seeds bring prosperity.”

“A stone in the windowsill is a soldier that keeps away thieves, but make sure it’s not a pretty rock cause they might steal it!”

“When you trim a vine, keep some branches by the door so all the hard work you’ve done doesn’t disappear in a single day!”

“When you’re old and can’t move so much anymore, keep a jar of seeds by the Gods so they can pick their offerings as they please.”

“I keep lavender by the computer because it helps me remember how to open Facebook. Lavender is good for memory. Tell your friends of the internet.”

“I keep the obsidian and the agathe geodes in front of the TV so there will be no bad news.”

So there you have it.

Advice from an authentic crone with over 70 years of Craft , Old Yeyé.

She wishes you all many blessings and love and hopes you are all well guided.

Happy new season from lucky Old Yeyé!

so, another spell jar this time to stop manic episodes, specially made for people with bipolar disorder (requested by @thegaywitchgiley)

amethyst (a tiny chip will do)

a jar

dirt

basil

cotton

black candle + lighter

slip of paper + pen

i. light your black candle. wrap your little piece of amethyst in cotton making sure nothing will get in or out of it. whisper into it what makes you the most uncomfortable about your manic episodes, letting go of it all.

ii. if you’ve got a sigil to stop mania you can draw it and place it in the bottom of your jar, if not you can just write something like ‘stop mania’ instead. fill half the jar with dirt, add the crystal wrapped in cotton and add as much basil as you want.

iii. then add more dirt until it’s full and close the jar, seal with the candle wax and keep it close to you.

iv. if you feel a manic episode coming (or if you’re having one) shake it as much as you can and repeat what you wrote on the slip of paper.

chimchimcharoo:

My first ever spell jar!

A Basic Home Protection jar

In order from top to bottom:

  1. Crushed Egg Shells- to protect and allow growth within
  2. Salt- to absorb negative energy
  3. Black Pepper- to protect and banish negativity
  4. Garlic Powder- to protect and strengthen
  5. Basil- to protect and keep peace
  6. Crushed Egg Shells- to protect and allow growth within

Each ingredient is given intent before added to the jar, and then sealed off with a white candle to exorcise negativity, and to promote peace and protection. I did the wax sealing by lighting a long candle, and letting it drip wax onto the lid (I had the jar sitting on a paper plate to avoid a mess), and then I let it sit until the wax cooled.

I wanted my first spell jar to be something to protect my home and those that I love within, and after researching I found that the basic protection based ingredients could be found within my kitchen cabinet!

*Side note: The crushed egg shells can be added to a garden or potted plant as a natural fertilizer to help promote growth!

Pendent/Spell Jar

So you know that one saying girls are made of sugar, spice, and everything nice? Well, ever since I could walk my mother told me I was purely spice.

This spell is a twist on this thought, even though any gender could use it. Below is a recipe for a spell jar to wear around your neck at times you feel you need courage, protection, or self-esteem. As always, feel free to tweak this recipe anyway you’d like.

-The Recipe-

Ingredients

- Black Salt - For absorbing negative energies, moodiness, and anger

- Cayenne - Strength, empowerment, and protection

- Cloves - Stops gossip, and strong protection from all harm

- Turmeric - Strength, and banishing harmful energies

- Vanilla - Self-love, vitality

- Red Candle - Strength, passion, courage

- A little bottle (One small enough to make into a necklace

- Paper with you intent on it

- A string

Directions

Take a mini jar and fill it with the ingredients listed above, write what you wish to accomplish with this spell and put it in the jar. Seal it with red candle wax and let it sit overnight in direct moon light. Attach your string to the jar. Now you have a cute little pendent! You can add a charm or your birth stone.

Much love, ♥ Angelica ♥

instead of jars to bury your spells in, my i suggest the idea of peat pots planters?

not only are they biodegradable, they are useful for many different things. you can grow herbs and starter plants or use them to bury a home protection without the fear of broken glass rising to the surface, or your jar staying in the ground for a 100 years. they also come in many different sizes as well. from large to very tiny

and you can even make your own from left over toilet paper rolls for a byproduct option that lessens garbage going into landfills.

there are plenty of cheaper, earth friendlier options available to us, as witches, at our disposal. it is up to us as a whole to start making better earth friendly choices, to modernize the practice. we are not from the middle ages and tradition has nothing to do with glass jars - we have the knowledge in modern days to realize how harmful the practice of burying jars actually is, we have resources to change that as well.

Be responsible with how your treat Mother Earth, witches! Great idea on how to do one small thing better for her.

this jar was made for use in your home or on your person but it’s super versatile !!

what you’ll need;

nutmeg

salt

crushed eggshell

red chili flakes

LUCK SPELL

Ingredients:*

1. Water

2. Ground Ginger

3. Ground Cinnamon

4. Ground Cloves

5. Poppy Seeds

6. Green Glitter

7. Beeswax Candle

Instructions:

Fill your jar with water. Pour in the herbs in whatever order you like, add as much as you feel is necessary. Add the glitter. Mentally recite your intent: “I imbue you with luck, prosperity, and good fortune.”

Breathe into the jar. This seals your intent. Plug the jar and shake it up. Seal the jar with a beeswax candle (I got mine at a local organic market, but it shouldn’t be hard to find online). Run the jar through the smoke of the blown-out candle to complete the spell.

Tip: Put this spell together on a recyclable paper plate or paper towel for easy clean up!

*If you have allergies to any of the following ingredients, look into other luck-corrosponding substitutions! Your safety is more important than anything!

spell jar for attracting positive things into your life

slightly adapted from samra haksever, author of mama moon’s book of magic, but is mostly the same. includes quotes from her book in the steps for how to create the jar

not my gif

this spell jar is best crafted on a Sunday, when you can channel the energy of the day, and look back on your achievements of the past week.

✿ ✿ ✿ ✿ ✿ ✿

you will need,

  • 7 small strips of paper
  • a pen
  • a mason jar, or a jar of similar size
  • 2-3 cinnamon sticks
  • a pinch of patchouli, but i used rosemary
  • a magnet or lodestone crystal
  • orange or white wax (optional)

the cinnamon brings your happiness blessings, and the magnet and patchouli draw many more of these good things to you.

✿ ✿ ✿ ✿ ✿ ✿

“on each piece of paper, write down something that has made you happy over the past week; this is the time to celebrate anything and everything, from seeing a cute dog in the park and treating yourself to a cup of coffee on your commute, to taking an afternoon nap.

“fold the papers up, put them in the jar with the cinnamon sticks, patchouli/rosemary and magnet, then place the jar on a windowsill that gets plenty of sunlight.”

“optional, seal with orange or white wax. if you decide not to seal the jar, add to it as and when, or even try to make it a Sunday ritual.”

Spell Jar for Protection

Ingredients/Equipment

  • Chilli Flakes (or Chilli Powder, whatever’s around) - to ward off unwanted guests
  • Rosemary - purification, protection
  • Salt - absorbing negative energy, protection, purification
  • Black Pepper (both peppercorns and grounded) - banish negativity, protection from evil
  • 3 Bay Leaves - protection from harmful energies
  • Protection Sigil or a Banish Negativity Sigil
  • Preferably Black Candle to seal the jar (white may be used as a substitute as I have done)
  • A Jar
  • A Funnel (trust me, if you don’t use one shit will go everywhere, make and use a homemade paper funnel if you need to)

Spell Method

  1. Cast a protective circle or do your own pre-spell rituals, whatever works for you and light the candle
  2. Cleanse your equipment and ingredients (I use specific ritual incense but again whatever works for you, sage burning, etc)
  3. Put the ingredients in the jar one at a time, repeating a chosen affirmation for protection with each one. The order doesn’t nessicarily matter as the intent is what’s most important. However, I recommend leaving the bay leaves until last
  4. Use a marker to draw a sigil that represents protection or banishing negativity on at least one of the bay leaves. If you need to break up the leaves to fit them in the jar that’s okay; again, the intention is what’s most important
  5. Close the jar and seal it with the wax from the candle

auroras-bones:

Ocean jar spell

Recently due to quarantine, I haven’t been able to visit the beach. I have a general longing for the sea but these days it makes me so sad that I’m not able to visit at all. So I made a small simple jar spell to keep the ocean with me!

Ingredients

beach sand

water(any water is fine but salt water, storm water, or moon works best)

seashells/seaglass

sea salt

blue wax

Steps

cast your circle, ground yourself, center, etc whatever you do to prepare for magick work

cleanse the ingredients you are using for the spell

sprinkle in the sand, and think about the good thoughts the beach sand gives you. I think about how it feels to walk in it and run your fingers through it

sprinkle in the salt and think about the good feeling the salt of the ocean gives you. I like to think about the smell of the ocean and the feel of dried salt water on your skin after a day of swimming.

place each seashell/sea glass piece in gently and think about the beauty the ocean.

put the water in the jar. This can be difficult if you have a teeny jar like me, but what I did was dip my finger in the water and let the water drip from my finger into the jar. I put in nine drops to represent Clíodhna and her ninth wave, as I called upon her to help me with this spell. As the water drips, think about the feeling of the water.

cork the jar and seal it with the blue wax. I like to think of it as water running down the bottle.

this one is completely optional, but when the beaches are safe to visit again, I hope let the ocean water run over it a few times!

Take it with you whenever you feel like you need the ocean with you. I’m keeping it in my cardigan pocket every where I go! :) Good luck witches, blessed be

seawitchtatiana:

As many of you know, seashells can break so easily. Use already broken shells and crush them with a pestle & mortar to create seashell powders. Depending on the type of seashell the powder is made of will determine it’s correspondences. I’d suggest crushing various shells of the same type just to make things easier (just all scallops or all clams, etc.).

Plus these are excellent for spell jars and bottles as well as sprinkling. And the best part is that you don’t have to worry about them breaking (unless you keep them in a breakable container) ! :D (You can use whole, non-broken shells as well, I just personally feel less guilty if I use the already broken ones for seashell powders.)

as a devotee of a sea goddess (more loosely a water goddess) u bet ur ass i have a green bottle which i found in the river filled with seashell powder.

also! if crushing them is hard (some shells are harder than others), if u put them in fire until they turn kinda silver-y will make it infinitely easier to crush, and plus u can use the fire to cleanse them, too! i used a bonfire when i did this so it was pretty hot, but i can’t see a reason why a candle, stovetop, or lighter wouldn’t work just as well, and just take a little longer?

blessings xoxo

Protection Spell Jar

I live in Florida, so in response to the growing hurricane, I’ve been doing spells all day. One of which is this mini protection spell jar. I used several herbs that are known for protection, as well as some I felt drawn to include. If you also create this spell jar, don’t feel like you need to perfectly follow this spell. Do what feels right.

What I used:

  • Mini jar with screw-on lid
  • Blue birthday cake candle small enough to fit in the jar
  • Blue candle (any size)
  • Cleansing smoke (I burned palo santo)
  • Cloves
  • Rosemary
  • Cinnamon
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Poppy seeds
  • Olive oil

Making the Jar

First, I cleansed my jar by opening it and turning it upside-down over my burning palo santo.

Next, I added in my herbs until it felt right. I ended up using more cinnamon than anything else.

Third, I added my olive oil and used my birthday candle to stir, and left it inside the jar.

Finally, I screwed on the lid and melted a few drops of my other blue candle on top.

I hope that anyone affected by hurricane Dorian is safe, and that your homes also stay safe. Be careful, everyone!
