The Irish author Aidan Comerford has written an interesting comment on JK Rowling’s journey from supporting same sex marriage in Ireland to welcoming both homophobic and transphobic bigots online.
“Gender critical radical feminists” (GC) AKA “trans-exclusionary radical feminists” (TERFs) are the transphobes of the left.
I speak to ex-gender critical people a lot (my DMs are open for that reason), and a lot of them were Leftists who cheered for Marriage Equality too, who found that as gender critical people they were expected to ally with people who they would have fought all their lives.
One ex-gender critical person describes how her eldest was upset with her for years, him telling her she had raised him not to speak like that about LGBT+ people, and she only understood why he was so upset when she heard her youngest repeat things she said about trans people.
Gender criticism, under the guise of women’s and LGB rights, actually radicalises people away from supporting women’s and LGB rights, and gets them using the language of the Alt Right, “Groomers” “Paedophile Enablers” “Perverts”, all the same words I heard people who were opposed to Marriage Equality use [in Ireland] in 2015. And I remember the same people calling us “ghouls” and “murderers” in 2018, during Repeal [a referendum legalizing abortion in Ireland].
What “gender criticism” is at its heart is an incredibly successful campaign by the Right Wing to get vulnerable Leftists (women who have experienced abuse are especially vulnerable) to abandon their former implacable support of LGBT+ & women’s rights &, instead, stand with those who want those rights rolled back.
After losing out on Marriage Equality, the Right decided to use the T to drive a wedge into LGBT+ (and women’s rights) support, so now you have former Leftists shouting that Stonewall UK are a “pro-paedohpile” organisation, something only the Right were saying in 2015.
So now, when they introduce their “Don’t Say Gay” bills, you have (former) Leftists who would have cheered for Irish Marriage Equality in 2015, trying to argue FOR these sort of bills, something they never would have dreamed of back in the day. That is radicalisation…
We need to stop calling terfs “feminists” and start calling them for what they are, “transphobes.” TERFs are not feminists. They don’t care about women’s rights. They only care about hating men and trans people taking a shit in public bathrooms. A non existent issue that nobody except transphobes care about. It is important feminists understand this.
I know that transphobes will shove their transphobia into anything but this is just bizarre. I’d feel bad for this person if they weren’t a transphobe.
I guess transphobes are running out of “arguments” because they’re starting to just say what they’ve actually been wanting to say this entire time- they don’t want you to exist. At best they want you to look the sex you were born as and pretend that you’re not trans. At worst they want it to be clear (beard and muscles while wearing a dress) so they know who to kill.
There are people like Helen Joyce using language that Nazi Germany used to talk about disabled people. “They need special help. (And that’s a burden.)”
There’s a “genocide pyramid” based on the patterns of actions usually taken before a genocide happens, and we’re just one step below the top.
It’s been time to treat transphobes as genocidal for awhile now. Nothing you say will sway them, so you have to push against them. (Be careful while doing it though.)
Alternatively if you can, I’d suggest moving to a progressive city where there’s a decent chance that you’ll have more allies than enemies. I feel really fucking lucky every day that all four of my grandparents just so happened to have wanted to move to the city I live in, and those who wave MAGA flags look extremely out of place among the BLM and Pride flags.
Edit: I forgot to mention- in that “documentary” that Matt Walsh made, he used a picture of a topless 15 year old trans boy. But by his logic he’s actually a girl. So to him and his audience he used a picture of a topless 15 year old girl.
Edit 2: I know this was strongly implied, but the trans boy had breast reduction surgery. I just wanted to clarify that before anybody asks why his boobs were out in public.

I am transgender yet I support a good boatload of their ideals because i have a working fucking brain, i’m confident in my transition because i know my own reasoning and know its not internalised misogyny or whatever the fuck (not to devalue those who have detransitioned for those reasons), and im sure as fuck not a misogynist towards others!
Goddamn ive lived as a woman surrounded by women, i know the fucking struggles and- unlike some may imply from me just being trans- i understand women arent just all cheap copies of each other and all these other things ive noticed they like to imply we transgender men think. and honestly it makes me sad…
I understand there are trans folks who fucking suck, rapists, murderers, harassers of various degrees, but i oh so fucking wish there was a comprehension that wanting my own body and mind to actually process together the way they wish didn’t make me all these awful things in their minds, but theres no real point in thinking or worrying about it… It’s just odd to have been a terf myself a good couple years back looking over the fence now.

“Trans-Exclusionary-Radical-Feminist,” when you think about it, is a VERY kind term. To be called a TERF is for the person to admit that they still consider you a feminist.
But what kind of feminist excludes so many women from their movement? If you hate so many women for what they are, you really don’t deserve to be called anykind of feminist, radical or otherwise.

i feel like we’re at a point where tumblr staff allowing transphobic shitbags to run rampant on their platform can no longer be excused by just saying “oh it’s just mismanagement” or “oh it’s just the algorithm”. maybe you could’ve justified trans people’s ‘based on your likes’ being regularly filled with nothing but anti-trans rhetoric by ‘the algorithm messing up’ and it’s a BIG stretch but maybe you could justify staff allowing users anti-trans hate speech posts to be paid to be shown to as many people as possible as just ‘it slipping through the cracks’. but now we’re at a point where tumblr is approving ads for VERY notable transphobic comedians to take up someone’s ENTIRE fucking phone screen. like. this is the most blatant confirmation there is to me that there’s some weird terf shit happening with tumblr staff. how on earth could you ignore this. it’s almost funny how blatant this is at this point.
on June 3rd i saw this post on my dash, with every single gif removed for ‘violating community guidelines’. reading through the caption and notes, and just two weeks after another r*cky gerv*is “comedy” special was released on netflix, it was pretty obvious that the original post was gifs of this bit:
it’s a comedian making jokes about lazy bigoted comedians like ricky gervais. this was the content so heinous that not a single gif could stay up on this site. what community guidelines were broken here? was james bullying ricky fucking gervais?? there’s not even a curse here so it can’t be language. or are you no longer allowed to call transph*bes what they are?
many sites (like twitter and instagram) are now banning words like “tr*nsph*be/tr*nsph*bia/tr*nsph*bic” but they don’t even show up in this gif set. is transgender a bad word now? are we allowed to say ‘transgender people’ and ‘little cis boy’ on tumblr or will our posts be taken down?
i wish i could go back and get more information but not only were all the gifs taken down, the original post no longer exists. they have completely erased it.
