Quick moving things in the birth chart

Imagine a gathering of people who were all born on the same day - same month, same year, same century. You are one of them. It’s your birthday - and theirs. The Universe has organised a  party and here you are, nibbling, drinking and socialising with all these same birthday people.

All your Suns are in the same sign, and all your planets as well. Only the Moon, which travels over about 12 degrees over the course of one day, can possibly be found in two different signs, but other than that all your placements are pretty much the same.

What’s amazing is that you are all quite different though. One has already taken up the role of “soul of the party” - Is that you? Some seem to feel a little bit out of place, some are helping… some are asking others how they feel, others tell you what they think before you ask…. Blame most of the differences on your rising signs!

The Rising Sign is actually only one of the magnificent four: Ascendant, MC, Descendant and IC aka Cross of Matter. Four angles forming two axis: the Horizon and the Meridian.

In the chart every planet touched by an angle of the cross becomes a dominant energy.  As this cross takes just one day to complete a round of zodiac, in your crowd, you’ll find people with Venus dominant, Pluto dominant, Saturn dominant, Sun, Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, Mars…. all will be represented.

The Universe, in its great wisdom, has even thought that the cross of matter shouldn’t look the same everywhere on earth. In your Know-Youself party, those who were born not too far from the Equator have a cross worth the name, horizon and meridian forming a really square angle.

Those who were born far North or far South on the other hand have their cross of matter flattened so to speak, as if a giant had walked on the meridian: the MC IC axis is much closer to the Ascendant-Descendant axis than you would have expected. If you love geometry, let’s talk about why it’s like that another day.

Just imagine that you have a square aspect, let’s say a Venus-Saturn square. Everyone in the room has it. For everyone there is a conflict to solve between the urge to relate and the need to set boundaries, a conflict between yes and no, love and ego, union and personal structure… This conflict is actually something so universal that all human beings have it - the difference is that everyone in your group has this conflict more specifically emphasized than the average human being, and it plays out in connection with the values of the signs in which Venus and Saturn are.

You all have it, but some of you have an angle on Venus,  others have one on Saturn, others not at all…  As a result, the interplay between these two energies will be rather different according to individuals.

The cross of matter is the skeleton of the whole house system. Planets won’t be active in the same houses for everyone. This also induces great variations between individuals.

I could now tell you the same story again with a variation: the Universe is organising a party with people who are born on the same month instead of the same day. The planetery placements will still be very similar, only the Moon will have visited all the signs of the zodiac over this period. The Moon comes just after the cross of matter as indicator of individual differences… And the same principle applies: As the Moon moves around, she conjuncts and aspects all planets. A conjunction is the strongest aspect, then we have major and minor aspects, and all can be exact, tight or loose…

All this to tell you this basic but extremely important priniciple: the quicker something moves, the more personal what it means and points at.

General things are like “having a nose”. It’s true for almost everyone. It’s very important to have a nose, those who lost theirs at war can testify for it, but if your lover say that what they love about you is that you have a nose, you won’t feel especially thrilled. If you are a lover complimenting, your beloved’s nose has to be small, pretty, elegant or anything nice that is particular to them… The more specific your elogious description of the admirable proportions of the sniffing device the more impactful the compliment.

If you are reading a chart,  the same principle applies. To be specific, focus on the quickest moving things: the Ascendant, the Cross of matter, the houses, then the Moon and the Sun, which are also important for being luminaries, then the other personal planets, Mercury, Venus, Mars, then the intermediary planets Jupiter and Saturn, and if nothing special has been noticed in connection with the transpersonal planets after having reviewed the quicker points, don’t make a fuss about them.

(Transpersonal planets will be in a particular house, therefore their house placement says something particular, however, houses do not emphasize energies like angles or quick planets do when they make strong aspects to them, so they won’t become dominant just for being in a house)

I have a last very important thing to mention, before I leave you emptying your mind in the bin and trying meditation instead of learning astrology: yes, having a nose is very important. So is having a heart, a brain, a liver, a central nervous system… If you are learning medicine, you have to learn anatomy. You will not start learning what is particular to such or such individual. Anatomy is about what is true for everyone.

A reason why many people can’t be very deep when reading charts is that they don’t know psychic anatomy. Venus in Sagittarius has exotic tastes, yes, great, knowledge is a value, OK, and what do we do with that? What is the real problem? What kind of suffering is happening and what is the way to heal? How can we articulate the inner conflicts and aspirations of a person in a way that really helps? What can be changed, what must be accepted? What does it all mean?

We can’t understand Venus in isolation. We need to understand how all the planets interact as an organism, at the level  Dane Rudyar calls “generic”, the level of what is true for everyone, before looking at particular charts.

If we know that someone has a fantastic nose, but  don’t know that for everybody the nose is associated with the sense of smell, how could we think of perfumes or wine tasting? We need to talk about what’s specific and particular, but we need to understand what’s universal before being able to do so.

Understanding the whole organism… is understanding the laws of the universe.

Astrology is part of what has been called “occult sciences” or esotericism. As for the word “psychology” etymologically it means “knowledge of the soul”. Before rushing into studying complex astrological technics, we better learn what we are made of.

….Let me summarize: In a chart, the quickest moving things (Cross of matter, luminaries, Mercury, Venus, Mars ) are the most personal indicators. They emphasise the importance of whatever they touch. In this way we can understand what is particular to the person we are reading the chart for, in the context of what is true for everyone. And we need to know what’s true for everyone.

The karmic indicators in the birth chart.

1 South Node and North Node.

The Moon Nodes are always exactly opposite in the chart.

The South Node (also called Ketu) represents the energy coming from our past lives, or from our family/ancestry/genetic inheritance.. It is an energy we are familiar with and needs to be balanced by the opposite energy of the North Node.

The North Node (also called Rahu) represents where we are called, where we will gain the greatest satisfaction…provided we dare taking up the challenge and step out of the South Node comfort zone.

The Nodes are placed in opposite signs and houses as well. The meaning of the Nodes in houses is equivalent the the placement in the analog signs, for instance:

my South Node is in Aquarius and in the 8th house. My North Node is therefore in Leo and the second house.

My karmic path in sign is from Aquarius to Leo, and in house from the 8th to the 2nd, which is equivalent to a Scorpio to Taurus path. (As Scorpio is the 8th sign of the zodiac and Taurus the second)

2 The Regents of the Nodes

To know more about our karmic path, we need to look at the "regents”. I’ll give just an example: My own karmic path goes from Aquarius to Leo. Uranus is the planet that rules Aquarius. Therefore this planet, its placement in sign, house and its aspect will give more information about my karmic past.

The Sun is the planet that rules Leo, similarly, the position of the Sun in sign and house, along with its aspects, will tell more about what I’m called to do in this life.

My karmic path in house goes from the 8th to the 2nd. The 8th house is analog to Scorpio (the 8th sign). Pluto rules Scorpio. So Pluto in my chart will give more information about my past.

The second house is analog to Taurus (2nd sign) Venus is the planet that rules Taurus. Therefore, Venus in my chart, along with the Sun, talks about what I am here to do..

3 Black Moon Lilith

Black Moon Lilith is a very special energy. Through the sign and house, possibly aspects It points out an area of life where we have an ambiguous attitude, a craving for absolute perfection and possibly a rejection of the values associated. It can also show values that we may find sexually attractive. Its position will confirm or precise the challenges we are going to meet on our karmic path.

4 Special cases

When planet are conjunct to a node, they add there energy to the karmic path. For instance, if Mercury is conjunct to the South Node, it’s energy is part of our karmic inheritance, and need to be balanced.

When a planet is square or semi square to a Node, it’s energy is problematic. It can turn against ourselves, until we learn to master it better and use it as our best asset.

5 Pluto

If we follow Jeff Wolf Green, we can also look at the house position of Pluto for an area of life undergoing transformation and the polarity point (opposite) for what needs to be developed.

sagittarius sun conjunct sagittarius pluto, sun conjunct chiron: I usually don’t really analyze conjunctions between the sun and pluto, as almost every sagittarius born during this generation will have their sun conjunct pluto. yet, since it makes tons of other major aspects with chiron, venus and saturn, I thought it’s worth talking about it. you may have a bad relationship with someone from your family, which led you to close yourself in your shell. maybe they used harsh words with you, which caused you a deep wound. or maybe, it’s not someone from your family, but a friend, a past lover, someone that stabbed you in the back and revealed themselves to be an enemy of yours. your lilith in the second house is also badly aspected with saturn, pluto and venus, therefore you could have been bullied, or overall this event has had a major impact on your sense of worth and in your relationships with others. you may develop way more trust issues than an average sagittarius, and you may abandon jupiter’s naive nature to become more cautious. possibly, you may not be aware of it, or at least you didn’t notice it at first. in fact, chiron, the aware wounded, is located in the 12th house, the house of hidden things. this could be something that (also) happened in a past life of yours, and hence you still feel some of its effects. or perhaps, you might have only found this out once you finally abandoned this person. their influence was somehow blocking you from truly understanding the situation, as it was covered and blurry before.
