LIVE

[How it would have played out if Minthe, Thetis and Thanatos went to Hecate with their information on Persephone’s act of wrath.]

Hecate: Let me get this straight, you think that the Goddess of Spring, heir to one of the wealthiest and most powerful Goddesses in the world, secretly grew to giant proportions and slaughtered an entire human city during a psychotic break, and your plan is to blackmail this person?

[The snarky chat trio’s face fall and Hecate smiles.]

Hecate: Good luck.

THE WEDDING OF PELEUS AND THETIS

This month we’re going to take a look at Classical mythology and history and it’s reception in later art !!!

A scene super popular in Archiac Greek pottery, the subject of Joachim Anthonisz Wtewael’s painting The Wedding of Peleus and Thetis in 1612.

Check out the Clark art gallery for more info

my favorite part about being a demigod is that i can just have my mom walk into hepheasteus’ forge and buy a new set of armor if i lose or break mine

mother: Youre perfect! Youre so good! You dont have to be a hero and die young!

ME: Hm maybe i should go back to the battlefield & fight the trojan pieces of shit because im SAD!

mother: Nooo!

they did nothing.

they knew how i felt about you;

saw the way we loved,

watched as promises spilled from our lips

and did nothing.

they knew what was going to happen–

planned the fallout before it began,

whispering amongst the stars

as we remained unknowing

and did nothing.

they led him to you,

led his spear on your body–

knew that the one behind the armour

was not me but you

and did nothing.

they did nothing

but take you away from me–

pawned your body to fight their games

and made me watch

as i lose the only person i have ever loved.

they did nothing

and that is when i knew,

it was not only mother

who was against us

but all of them too.

A section of a votive relief that depicts Achilles and Thetis. The Greek hero Achilles is recognisable by his shield and helmet. He rides in a chariot with his mother Thetis.

It was probably set up in a religious sanction, the names of the dedicators partially legible at the bottom of the relief;

“… Lakrates and Gephes of the Achilleides.”

I recently finished The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller and I was doing okay emotionally until the last page where I started ugly crying interested in Miller’s choice of depicting Thetis in such a ghoulish way. For a while I thought it would be a power move and Thetis would change into a beautiful goddess when she was with Achilles, but spoiler!(?) that didn’t happen.

That got me thinking about how I would depict Thetis in my own style, and so I drew the two together.

Of all the non-goddesses, these two have my favorite designs.

Sorry for the sporadic posting everyone! I am still drawing but still very much getting used to drawing on a tablet and CSP, so I don’t have a lot to show you. I feel like I’m slowly getting the hang of it though!

Stay safe everyone!

Thetis:

This painting dates from back in January, and is part of a commissioned set that features the mothers of Classical heroes.

Thetis is a sea nymph who was forcibly married to a mortal, Peleus. She’s most famous for rendering her son, Achilles, nearly invulnerable. In the most common version of the story, Thetis dipped the infant Achilles in the waters of the Styx, protecting all parts of him but his heel. In another version, she passed him through the fire at night to burn away his immortality.

She also came to her son after the death of his beloved Patroclus. While Achilles sat wrapped in mourning, Thetis convinced Hephaestus to make him a shield and set of divinely protected armor - the armor he wore to defeat the Trojan Hector.

In Archaic Greece, Thetis may have been a goddess worshipped in her own right. One fragment identifies her as the creator of the universe, and some writings suggest her worship persisted into the historical period.

I understand that Tumblr has enacted a policy of denigrating search results that include outgoing links, so if you’d like prints, you can get them at the Etsy shop linked in my header!

Hephaestus (#8

in my olympians series)
Hephaestus, god of metal and weapon smithing, craftsmanship, and fire. I love this god because he doesn't have the overwhelming majesty, and the arrogance that comes along with it. He feels more human to me. Born with a lame leg, and described as ugly, he presents a much more humble appearance. But he shines in the ingenuity department, crafting marvelous weapons, tools, and traps with his sacred objects; his golden hammer and tongs.

I made his hair and beard orange for his connection with fire, but his skin is a pale blue from being stuck in his palace forge cave on Olympus. ALL of the crafted items in the image are from specific myths. Care to take a guess?

1.) armor and shield (bonus points for the visitors watching)
2.) throne
3.) woman figure
4.) winged boots and hat
5.) chariot
6.) golden net

Thanks for reading! And if you see an opportunity to share this art I would appreciate it! Xoxo
