The Awakening of Adonis (1899), by J.W. Waterhouse
Adonis was commissioned to the underworld by Zeus, but every spring, when the anemones start to flower, he is kissed back to life by his lover Aphrodite. To the right, we see Cupid reviving the glowing torch of life and Waterhouse’s favourite birds, the pigeons also fly into the scene.
Already during his life, the painting was criticized for being too mellow and also the technique does not match Waterhouse’s usual standards. It may have been rushed to be finished in time for the 1899 summer exhibition of the Royal Academy. Andrew Lloyd Webber added it to his art collection in 2016.
Anyways I’ve started settling into my magic again, some things in my life have improved and given me renewed zest. Maybe I’ll post some things soon. I have been considering dabbling with shrooms and magic and seeing what the results are like. If you have any experience dabbling with magic and psychedelics, message me :)
I now have two very separate altars to Aphrodite and Athena. Witchy goals are to pen some pages in my grimoire and do some more research and reading. I have resurected a witchy journal I started at the beginning of the pandemic
Λ3239 Kissamos, Health Center. Found and donated by D. Vouterakis 1985. Decorative marble group of Aphrodite and Eros sitting on a rock playing guitar. The composition is iconographically unique. Although Eros is often depicted with a guitar or lyre (on lamps, figurines, mosaics, wall paintings, etc.), the depiction of Aphrodite with musical instruments is rare. It probably decorate an atrium. Date: Second half of 1st century A.D.
