This is a seriously nice rooftop bar here at the Hilton, great view, nice atmosphere,BUT…… they seriously need a proper bartender! I mean how do you make a bad Gin and Tonic? It’s just two ingredients Gin-and-Tonic. I even specified that I wanted it with the Hendricks Gin (top shelf shit) So sad. #rooftopbar #bar #drinking #liquor #hendriksgin #ginandtonic #hilton #view #drinkporn #gigglesflintstone #CM1K (at Kabana Rooftop)

Older gentleman resembling a gay Peter Capaldi: “Well, I’ve given her all the literature ‘for her sister’ who’s an alcoholic, but I think she ought to be reading it herself [exaggerated wink] because drinking at 10 in the morning… vodka at 10 in the morning is not on… unless you’re a Russian [spritzes cologne on himself].”

One of the first things to confuse me in my daily life here in London was the ubiquitous “Off Licence” sign outside certain shops — my first association was with off-brand products, which turned out to be totally off base (heh). An off-licence is a shop (newsagent, convenience store, bodega) that is licensed to sell alcohol for consumption off the premises, as opposed to an establishment (bar, pub, restaurant, club) that is licensed to sell alcohol for consumption on the premises.

If you want to know more about UK liquor licensing laws, there’s a lengthy Wikipedia article here but in practice, I enjoy being able to get wine and hard liquor at the same place as my milk, Diet Coke, and candy bars. While this is probably not revolutionary for anyone who doesn’t live in the NYC metro area, it’s exciting for someone who was used to only being able to get beer, Smirnoff Ice, or Chateau Diana “wine drink” at the local bodega.

In addition to alcohol, your typical off-licence will sell ice cream, beverages, snacks, tea, condiments, baking products, toilet paper, cleaning products, toothpaste, cigarettes, lottery tickets, and other sundry items. Essentially, all off-licences are convenience stores, but not all convenience stores are off-licences — I think the latter are usually called newsagents.
