When rolling on a budget, the Dollar Tree is your friend. Unless you need a black candle, then you’re shit outta luck. But hey! All the major colors are there so I, for one, am grateful

First off, this is not a cursing or hexing spell like thing. Black, as a color, means more than just evil or darkness or negative intent. According to this chart, the color black means “safety, protection, banish negativity, pride and shape shifting”. In this case, I’m focusing on the first 3 meanings and this is really simple for anyone to do if you’re feeling overwhelmed with negative energy, want to protect yourself from someone possibly sending negativity your way or just want to give an extra layer of protection when working your craft.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 black candle (I bought this votive when I couldn’t find black candles in the regular store off the Halloween season)
  • Sandalwood oil or any anointing oil (one that can represent protection would be best)
  • a few strands of hair and/ or nail clippings of the intended (yourself or the one you feel will benefit from this)
  • a place to leave all this undisturbed (altar, shelf or anywhere candle safe)
  • a spell or series of spells you wrote yourself or you found that feel in tuned with you.

What I did:

  1. Take the candle and use your finger to anoint the candle, top to bottom and under and over, with the oil. You can do this ahead of time as the oil can make the outside a little soft so use just a small enough to cover and let sit so the oil’s essence is taken in.
  2. I use a tea cup to hold my candles in, but any holder is fine. Take that and place a few strand of hair or the clippings on the bottom. I use both and the hair you can take from your brush. You could use trimmings, but I feel whole strands (including the root) are more potent. the clippings I used are from that day and freshest, but a couple days old isn’t too bad either as long as you know they’re from the same source (especially if you’re doing this for someone else)
  3. Place the anointed candle on top of these items. They don’t all have to be under the candle but as long as the majority are, you’re fine.
  4. Light the candle and speak aloud your spells as many times as you feel like. I did the following 3 time: negative energy banishment, protection spell, karma spell
  5. It might take a bit, but you should feel lighter, emotionally, and feel your energy lift and brighten. Let the candle burn until it melts and covers what you placed in the cup.

If there’s still some wick left, you can just use this and repeat the spells you spoke without having to place new strands or clippings as this now ties you or the intended with this candle until it can no longer be lit. Repeat the entire thing as needed.

For added effect, do this on the new, full and half moons. Each phase will emphasis your new beginnings and growth as you do your best to disconnect and remove any and all negative effects upon yourself and your home.

Petition for Love

I’ve worked with the goddess Venus on many occasions for self love, but I felt I needed to work other her to find love. I don’t often do these sort of things, but seeing how the normal ways are failing me, it couldn’t hurt to do a petition.

Please take note this is not to influence a specific person, but to draw your ideal lover to you.

You will need:

  • Rose buds (small handful is more than enough)
  • Wide white candle (preferably in a container for safety) can be infused with essential oils/ scents that go with roses
  • piece of Rose quartz cleansed and charged (shape is your choice)
  • Rose incense
  • Pink paper
  • Red pen
  • Rose infused oil (I have a coconut based one but if you have another or made one, that’s good, too)
  • Red cotton cord (I used craft cord). See that it’s a length long enough to wrap a few times around a scroll
  • A place to leave the candle lit for a while as you reflect.
  • Fire proof dish for burning offerings/ incense
  • Optional: romantic music (I used the Classical Romance playlist on Tidal)

Set up your space so nothing will be disturbed. Always better if you can be in a room free from pets and kids for safety reason, if possible.

Sprinkle the rose buds on top of the candle. Make sure they’re not right near to the wick/wicks. Place rose quartz and incense holder next to the candle.

Next, take your paper and write with your red pen:

Love and Romance find their way to me”

I drew hearts in the spaces that were left for emphasis. Take your finger and run the rose oil over all the words you just wrote. Rub it in if it looks like it’s pooling (some papers are not as absorbing as others so go easy on the oil just to prevent a mess). Roll the paper up and tie it with your cord.

Light the candle and incense. Holding the scroll in your hand, say what words best suit your required petition. Speak out what you seek in your love interest and envision it going into the scroll. Take as much time as you need with this, but once your done, place the scroll between the incense and the rose quartz. Give thanks to Venus for listening and allow the candle to burn for a while until the rose buds have become a part of the candle. Play your music as you sit in contemplation.

The next day, when you first wake, take the scroll and place it in the dish. Give thanks once more and light it, watching it and envisioning your message rising to the heavens for all to hear.

In the coming days, you can use the candle to meditate on the process you’ve just done as the rose buds will be your connection to the words you’ve sent to the heavens.

Things To Research As A Witch MASTERLIST

Always remember that each witch’s journey is a different one. You certainly do not have to research all of these in one go. Or all of it for that matter. Take your time and explore the possibilities of witchcraft, even if it’s one subject at a time. Witchcraft isnt strict on rules, find what suits you, there’s a place for everyone. And remember, always keep learning! :)

I tried to organize it somewhat (not really) Im going to start a series of master lists like this one for different types of witches too! So stick around for those but for now…

a row of beeswax candles hang from a stick. the wax is a warm, buttery yellow and the candles are crusted in an uneven covering of herbs and cottonwood buds.

Happy solstice, heathens! ❄️

Made beeswax candles with one landmate late on solstice eve, after a several hour song jam with another (working on ‘O death’ from Songcatcher). Such a beautiful, delicious, nourishing treasure of a night. These candle babies got infused with cottonwood resin & rolled in yarrow flowers, rosemary, juniper, & cottonwood buds. Most are for gifting, but we’re also slowly moving toward no-electric-light in the main house.

After being on the move for a season, and before that living somewhere I didn’t intend to stay, it feels intensely good to have a holiday with friends on land that I can actually feel connection to. The cottonwood buds are a sweet tie to friends on the west coast, and the yarrow, rosemary, and juniper are big local allies in boundary holding and protection. The wax came from local bees. I love feeling the interweaving of plants and other beings that feeds into my life & prayers, knowing that the nectar of local flowers colored the wax, that the resin from the cottonwood made sticky a friend’s fingers a continent away. Knowing that miles of flight over the blue ridge mountains made the wax possible, that all those visions and moments and reaching toward the sun get twined together to help me remember how to grow brighter with the season and take rest as it comes, how to surround myself with strong, supple edges. We’re crafting new traditions here in the wake of turbulent family histories and with the scraps of community we can knit together safely, & it is such a fucking blessing.

dragoncastings:

The spark of a candle can purify the air and can also be applied for divination. Candles can be engraved, anointed, infused, and beyond. They also are great for incorporating the element Fire. However, Please do not let your craft cause a fire. Be responsible with your flames.

Fire safety is an especially important thing to be aware of and practice when working with fire, candles, bundles, or cauldrons. I suggest keeping a glass of water around and placing the item you intend to burn on a safe surface. Keeping your cauldron on a plate, or bowl of salt is also highly recommended. Always put out lit candles before leaving it unattended or going to bed.

Methods And Mannerisms:

Classic Candle Care:

Trimming your wick every time before lighting your candle can assist in a cleaner and softer burn, just make sure not to cut it too short. Other traditions believe that you should let your candles burn themselves completely. Different practices say to only use a Snuffer to put the wick out. If so, please be safe about it and take extra precautions.

Centering with Candles:

I prefer to cast a small circle, or set the space before I light the candle, and have the flame and warmth resemble the essence of solar energy, purification, and sacredness. This helps me center myself and set my individual intentions more efficiently.

Chromomancy:

Using color theory or the magickal meanings of colors, choosing the color or shade or your candle can be extremely beneficial in amplifying your intended effects.

Personalization:

If you desire to personalize your candle, you can Inscribe a candle with a Symbol, Sigil, Ward, or Rune to cast your intention. You can also Anoint your candle by rubbing it with intentions with oil. To anoint, caress upwards and towards you for attracting, and away and downward for banishing. Add herbs if desired.

Classifications Of Candles:

Tea-Light Candles:

A tiny candle in a tin. This is useful for travel, secrecy, or budgeting. You can add sprinkles of herbs in the tin (beneath the candle) for a simple spell. Can often be found at the dollar store.

Taper Candles:

The classical and visually pleasing candles which have nothing keeping the candle contained. They can vary in height and width, but they are exceptional for embalming or anointing.

Pillar Candles:

These are long burning and radiant candles. They are usually tall and have a circular glass container. Can often be found in dollar and thrift stores alongside holders for them/

Wood-Wick Candles:

These sparkling and charming Wood-wick Candles provide grounding, gratifying, and gentle crackles as they incorporate earthly energies. The noise is soothing and the ambiance is fabulous

HOW TO DRESS YOUR CANDLE ACCORDING TO YOUR INTENTION

Candle magic is surprisingly something I was late to the party for. Sure, I used different color candles for my spells but actually using candles and dressing them for intentions came later on in my practice.

I don’t really know what held me back from working with candles, but they are one of the most efficient ways to send and set your intentions out there to get results.

1 Decide on your intention

The first thing you want to do before you move forward with your spell candle is deciding on your intention. Are you wanting more money? A new career opportunity? Or opening yourself for a new relationship? Be as specific as possible.

2 Choose your candle

Choosing your candle doesn’t have to be a perfect match, but pick something that speaks to you. This could be the color of your candle, green for money, red for love and passion etc. Choose the size of your candle according to how many days you want to light your spell candle. For instance if it’s a quick spell, a small candle will be fine, for something that you need across 7 days, use a large pillar candle.

3 Cleanse your candle

Once you have your candle chosen, you are going to want to cleanse it. I am guilty of skipping this part, but it’s still important. Cleanse your candle like you would any other working tool. I preferably use incense but choose whatever cleansing method works for you.

4 Dress your candle

Dressing your candle is basically rubbing it down with oil. Choose an oil that works well with your intention. Olive oil is great for drawing in, or finance. Rose oil for love. If you don’t want your candle oily, light the top of your candle until the wax on the top has a melted pool. Drip your oil in the melted wax and then let the wax harden. You can also add herbs or other small crystals to dress it up more. Continue to choose crystals and herbs to match your intentions.

5 Carve your candle

Next carve your candle with your intention. You don’t have to do this step, but sometimes it helps set the candle if you carve one word phrases such as LOVE, MONEY or something to that effect on your candle

Once you’ve dressed and carved your candle, it’s ready for your spell work.

Witch tip: The longer you work with your candle and ‘dress it up’ the stronger the energy will be when you send out your intention. how to dress your candle according to your intention

Candles are of course a witches go to. Almost every spell, ritual or cleanse calls for at least a candle or two to help elevate the energy. It’s something about even lighting the candle in the first place that starts setting the mood. Think about a birthday cake, you light the number of candles according to how old you’re turning, make a wish, then blow them all out. I don’t care what anyone says, that’s totally a spell.

If you’re new to Witchcraft and want to sort it all out, follow the guide below. I didn’t really intend on writing this much on candles, selling as there is already so much information available on the subject, but I just started to roll with whatever I was thinking.

Types of Candles

Pillar Candles - These are thick round candles that can usually stand on their own. They come in any range of colors and sometimes scents. Pillar candles in my experience are used as a sort of decoration or just an altar candle. I’ve seen altars or spaces decorated with lots of different height pillar candles dripping everywhere. It makes for an amazing aesthetic. If you are using Pillar Candles, place a coaster or heatproof glass on the bottom of your candle to protect the surface you are burning the candle on.

Mini Spell Candles - These candles you’ve probably seen at any local mystical or witch shop. They come in a range of rainbow colors and are larger than a birthday candle but smaller much smaller than a Pillar Candle. Mini Spell Candles are definitely a staple in many witches’ cabinets, and oftentimes witches (like myself) keep several in every color just in case. When a spell asks for a certain color of candle, they are usually referring to these. The best thing about these candles is that they are pretty inexpensive, and you can grab a bunch in any color for all your spell casting needs.

Candles in Shapes (like a man or woman or skull) - These candles are more specific. They are sometimes used to target a specific person or even just yourself. The shape or figure of the candle can represent your target in a more personal way. These candles can be used for a wide range of reasons and come in a variety of colors to suit any spell working.

Tea Lights - I’m a Tea Light advocate. I know they’re not very witchy, but you can grab a bag at any dollar store and use them for everything. I like to use them to line the bathtub for any ritual baths, decorate my altar, and even carve intentions on them or symbols and burn them for small spells. I also use Tea Lights for tarot readings and any sort of Divination. The versatility of these little guys is what makes me a Tea Light fan.

Votive Candles - Votive candles to me are glorified Tea Lights. They are small sort of fat Pillars and need to be encased in a glass votive. Hence, the name. I haven’t seen too many of these in very specific colors but I do have a bunch on hand in case. Just like the Tea Lights, you can purchase these at a discount store and are generally not very expensive.

Knob Candles - I’ve only used knob candles a couple of times. You can recognize them by their specific look, they literally have seven or so knobs on them. The intention for this is that you cast the spell and burn one knob a day. Be warned the knobs take forever to burn, so make sure you have enough time to babysit this guy each day.

7 Day Candles - 7 Day Candles are sort of like the knob candle, however they are tall candles that come in a glass vase. These candles are generally poured, and sometimes the glass has decoration on it according to it’s intention. You can purchase these ‘fixed’ or charged with intentions like luck or money, and they come in a variety of colors. You can also purchase these white and create your own intentions by decorating the glass vase yourself and adding your own oils and herbs to the candle.

Dipped Candles - These are what I think of when I think of original old school candles. They sometimes come in a pair with the wick connecting the two candles. Dipped candles are usually crafted by a candle maker, and if you find a witch who dips and sells her own candles you’re in luck!

Tall Candles - Tall candles are your basic candles that people used to have out on their dining room table in brass or metal candleholders. I think most people use them for decoration, but you could add them to your alter or spells. I don’t typically use them for whatever reason.

Candle Color Meanings

White - White is used for cleansing, new beginnings and fresh starts. White can also be used for clarity and divination.

Black - Black absorbs negativity, so I’ve always used it to get rid of negativity, protection, or banishing.

Blue - Blue is tranquil. Use blue candles in your spell work for focus, peace and wisdom.

Orange - Orange is a bright and happy color. It brings out joy, stimulates energy and attraction. (The manifesting kind, not the lover kind.)

Yellow - Yellow is more of a breaking blocks kind of color. It also brings confidence and new ideas to the table.

Pink - Pink is all the things like love, passion, self-love, happiness and even romance.

Purple - Purple is more of a regal color and with it comes meditation, connecting to your spirits, and intuition.

Green - Green is all about money, success and prosperity. It attracts wealth and abundance.

Red - While pink is the color of romantic love, red is straight up passion and power. Increased energy and courage.

Gold - Gold is the masculine color and can bring about success and abundance. I like to use gold for money too.

Silver - Silver is the feminine version and is more about connecting to the goddess. Silver is used for deepening your spiritual connection and developing psychic abilities.

1. When to light a candle.

Candles should be used ONLY IN MOMENTS OF NEED, STRUGGLE AND WEAKNESS. Using a candle in moments where it’s not necessary is INEFFECTIVE. You can’t use them as an “additional” or “supportive” ritual for what is already perfectly fine.
Save yourself some money and stop wasting candles for non-honorable purposes. Fire energy is proud and very strong, it doesn’t like just to be a useless “accessory” in your space. Do not offend it.

Each time you light a candle, there must be a serious reason why.

2. What candle do I choose?

Size, height, duration, color and scent all depend on your needs.

  • Maxi votive candles (40h+ duration)-Use if you’re stuck in a situation that’ll take long weeks or even an entire month to come to an end: you can light it every night for 2-3 hours until you achieve your goals.
  • Big candles (30h+ duration)-Use if you’re stuck in a situation that’ll take about 15 days to come to an end: you can light it every night for 2-3 hours until you achieve your goals.
  • Medium candles (20-26h duration)-Use if you’re stuck in a situation that’ll take between 1 week and 10 days to come to an end: you can light it every night for 2-3 hours until you achieve your goals.
  • Mini candles (2-4h duration)-Use if you’re invoking the help of fire energy for just a 1-day matter, use tealights and small candles.
Let it burn until the flame expires by itself, do not suppress it.

BARE CANDLE: it’s the candle alone, you decide what type of candle holder goes underneath. Plates, flat coasters & ashtrays are recommended. Very effective in small sizes. Use if you don’t need extra protection and for shortest term rituals (1-2 days). When larger, it can be placed inside a lantern or vase (read VASE C. or LANTERN). Can’t be lit in social settings, indoor only. This type of candle supports the presence of other flames.

JAR CANDLE: Jarred candle or jar containing a candle, includes a jar cap. The cap is very useful for suppressing the flame gently; this type is recommended for long term rituals that require you to light up and extinguish the candle every night.
Excellent for patience, perseverance, affection and self-help.
Can be lit in social settings
ALONE, without the interference of other candles.

LANTERN: whatever candle you decide to place inside a lantern. Best effective for welcoming GUIDANCE, spirituality, PEACE, HOPE and INSPIRATION. DON’T USE for anything related to sadness/negativity/confusion, this candle WON’T HELP YOU SOLVE PROBLEMS. Can only be lit in private or familiar settings, both outdoor and indoor. This type of candle supports the presence of other bare flames at a reasonable distance.

VASE CANDLE: candle poured or placed inside a vase holder. Vase candles don’t have a cap, they’re open on top. Best suitable for pyromancy/flame reading, social relationships, deep spellworkand protection (the taller the vase/the darker the color of the vase, the stronger the protection). By far the most powerful yet sensitiveof all, can’t be lit in social settings.Indoor only. This type of candle DOES NOT support the presence of other flames.

ROUND/FLOATING CANDLE: has round edges, made to float on water during a relaxing bath or just for atmosphere in a pond. They interact well with water energy, best suitable for emotions, mystery and for any sort of healing ritual. Can be lit in social settings but most effective in private, both indoor and outdoor. This type of candle supports the presence of other twinflames.

CLASSICTHIN & TALL CANDLE(candelabra): typical slender candle, excellent for spirituality, enlightment, ambition, special occasions and wealth. Being a tall candle, it strives towards a higher dimention and energy. Can be lit in social settings, indoor only.Supports the presence of other flames.Best effective if colored(non-white).

3. What color should I pick?

White: neutral wishes, positive energy within ourselves, light-hearted thoughts, purity, weather, anything home-related, balance, equality, winter.

Black: deep issues, overcoming fears and disorders, difficult problems of any sort, protection, investigation, inner strength, vision, tension, explicit clarity, negative energy to fight off.

Indigo, Purple: spirituality, beliefs, transformation, rebirth, higher knowledge, research, prayers, emotional connection, meditation, strong neutral energy that needs to be channeled upwards.

Blue: motivation, logic, control, consistency, physical movement, gaps and lacks of any sort, donations, masculine energy, males, assertiveness, addiction, prizes, charts, competitiveness, law.

Lilac, light blue, turquoise, periwinkle etc.: freedom, exploration, travel, serenity, peace of mind, good will, big steps, dreams, mood improvement, healing, positive energy that needs to expand, summer.

Light/Dark grey: must use this color only in case you run out of candles or have a minor neutral doubt. It’s the weakest, most vulnerable color of all. Its absolute neutrality can be affected by negativity.

Yellows: your own relationship with nature outdoor, vitality, the arts, music, musical instruments, games, service, help, encouragement, small steps, new life, newborns, babies, spring.

Oranges:boldness, personality, social relationships, respect, parties, breaking control, breaking the rules, breaking patterns, decision making, negative energy from other people that needs to be sent back to the source, breakups.

Browns: formalities, work environment, stability, assets, tasks, stasis, milestones, practicalities, buildings, construction, neutral energy that has to stay fixed and stored inside your own body and possessions, long term memory, autumn.

Greens: environment, plants, progress, accountability, sustainability, food, sports, animals, crafts, strong neutral energy that is essential for our survival, common sense, empathy, inspiration.

Pinks (antique, candy, dust…): Love, collaboration, confessions, talks/chats, sex, behavioral changes, patience, understanding, menstrual cycle, labor, delivery, reception, friendships, courage, gossip, feminine energy, females, intuition.

Reds: passions (hobbies, competitions, dreams, jobs), determination, fury, anger, negative energy that needs to be balanced out, high pressure, stress, beauty, glamour, taboos, speed, war, drama, devastation, destruction, short term memory.

Fuchsia:anything moral, ethic thoughts, human rights, philosophy, heightened sensitivity/intuition, humanitarian propaganda, originality, demonstrations, collectivity, unity, deep conversations, study, culture, open mind.

Gold: = Yellow + all things money-related and sunshine.

Silver: loneliness, cozy environment, cold temper, sacred space, the outer space, modernity, modern style, metals, fish, any measure of time, time, clocks, watches, anything cold/frozen/precious/eternal.

Bronze: similar to brown + the past, hearth, wood, the 4 seasons, strength, warm environment, anything cooked/boiling hot/old/seasoned, spices, resistance, hospitality, endurance, restoration, recycling, maintenance.
