I started coming up with some ideas to make Goliath lore more interesting. I thought it would be cool if they had shamans who see glimpses of the future by spilling blood on ancestral stone and looking at how it spills over the stone.

Here are some sample omens based on how the blood spills that I have come up with (written from the perspective of the shaman):

“The blood trickles around these sacred stones like the weaving strands of a spider’s web. Just as the spider betrays the fly, someone aims to betray the chief.”

“Look, here, as the blood splashes against that stone and droplets of red seep into the dirt. Like the rain, it is. There will be a great downpour.”

“Ah, the blood pools in a small pond of crimson. But oh what is this that floats in the blood I have spilt? A raven’s feather. Oh, no. A great death approaches.”

“The blood trickles over this stone like a mountain brook. But oh. Oh no. Look as that Toad splashes in the blood. Our tribe shall face a coming plague.”

“Look, boy, as the blood swirls in a pattern that mimics the cosmos on a clear night. The spirals tell me that a great hero will soon be born.”

“Ah, yes, good. Just as the blood nurtures this flower that grows between the stone, so too will we be nurtured by good health this new year. This is good.”

As you can see it’s not just the pattern of the blood but how the blood interacts with the world around it. The shaman knows how to read the signs. Now so do you. Feel free to use in your own fantasy worlds, whether with Goliaths (or other giantkin), orcs, elves, humans, whatever you desire.

Also please note that just because blood is spilt and used to predict the future it doesn’t have to be evil. I imagine the shaman from my examples would be neutral good. And while it would make perfect since for a witch to do this too, witches dont have to be evil either.

I dont know what it is but there is something Evocative of freshly spilt blood on cold, mountain stone. It’s very mystical.

So, you’ve just started diving into the world of the diviner. Spells, readings, charms and talismans: it’s all super cool and you’re really excited. Awesome! Be excited! Fuel your interest and knowledge - but keep in mind all of these things require time and energy.

I feel like a lot of people, myself included when I first got started, want to dive right in and do all the things. They start running with a bunch of cleansing and banishing spells, do 27 tarot spreads a night for the first week, then try to load up a bunch of personal spells on top of it. 

Suddenly they hit a brick wall. The spells stop working like they did in the beginning. They begin feeling the burnout. They keep asking themselves “What am I doing wrong? It was working so well before. Maybe this isn’t for me.” This doesn’t only apply to new diviners, many seasoned people of magick are often guilty of the same thing if they have a burst of energy.  It isn’t so much that something was done wrong, just that it overloaded their energy flow. I’ve seen perfectly awesome spells thrown out as they were perceived as “not correct” or “not functioning” only because they were performed during a burnout- especially banishing, protection and cleansing rituals.

Instead of throwing around spells at everything that moves, identify a few important things. Is the goal of this spell a true need of mine, or simply something I want? Am I willing to dedicate the proper amount of time and energy to see this spell through? Am I willing to make any sacrifices to see this through?

As a practical example, I recently bought my first home (I’ll get back to this in a later post). My first home happens to have a pool. I know that I’ll need to clean it regularly, maintain the chemical levels, and occasionally relocate any critters that happen to wander in. Am I going to do these things every single day? Of course not. If I did, I wouldn’t have the time or energy to actually enjoy the pool. So instead, I set a loose schedule. The beginning requires a lot of attention and work, but then only every few days I would check and maintain the chemical levels. Maybe once a week, I deep clean the filter and bottom of the pool. Only if absolutely necessary would I need to relocate a critter or two. Then down the road, I’ll decide to add a water feature, or a new pool toy.

The same applies to magickal practice. Once you have found your base level of understanding, you don’t need to power through spells for the rest of your life. Not every day has to be “magically enhanced”, in fact it may be better off without. Every couple of days, throw a general tarot reading as a spot check. Once a week or so, do some deep meditation to clear out the depths of your psyche. Wandering spirits aren’t always bad, and most go away on their own, so only banish if you need to. If you identify something that you need, consider taking traditional routes before casting a spell for it. The more energy you store, the more energy you’ll have to spend on something you really need.

By employing these types of practices, you’ll start to find that you are able to cast powerful life-altering magick for better or worse. Am I saying to stop writing every neat spell you come across down? Absolutely not! Just keep them off to the side. Maybe when you really need it, you’ll look back and find it and have the true energy and drive to cast it successfully.

So I had a thought this morning–
Yes or no questions, and divining (depending on your method of divination). Some of you are comfortable answering them, some of you are not. I always read, when learning, that yes or no question are no good. That they cannot be answered. Here is what I have found, and maybe what I will be telling people I divine for in the future.

Every reading I had been getting that was a yes or no question, I found myself saying “Yes, if…”

I found that interesting. People asking questions are looking for a “yes.” or “no.” with a period behind them, an effortless answer to whatever issue at hand. That is why we ask yes or no questions. They are definitive and relieving, and we also often look for the most auspicious answers.

I now realize that I was wrong to say “Yes,if…” because any one of those answers could’ve been “No, because…” 

Yes you can reconnect with your best friend, if you swallow your pride and apologize.No, you will not reconnect with your best friend, because you will not swallow your pride and apologize.

My cards, my tea leaves, my whatevers–any answer they give is both a yes and no given a certain factor of change the person must employ themselves to get whatever they’re after.

Never again will I view my readings as a simple yes or no. How I am viewing them is “possibly,giventhis factor of change.”  It is possible you will reconnect with your best friend, if you swallow your pride and apologize. 

I know at first this will probably make me uncomfortable as a diviner because I do not want to be viewed as incapable of ~reading the future~ or whatever… however, I can no longer accept doing it the other way because that also takes all effort to do the thing out of their hands, and putting all accountability for its success or failure into mine. 

I do not know if this is common knowledge amongst diviners, or not, but I thought I would share my thoughts in case it would help anyone! Of course, you may have completely different findings. Do what suits you. Thanks for reading~ :)
