Some plants such as lettuce require cool conditions for germination (<10 oC), a condition known as thermo-dormancy. This reflects the evolution of the wild parent species in cooler environments and growth cycles limited by higher summer temperatures. Transforming live but dormant seed into new healthy self-sufficient plants requires care and planning. The conditions in which seed is stored before use greatly affect the vigour and quality of plants post-germination. Seed which is stored too long or in unsuitable environments deteriorates resulting in unthrifty seedlings.

Aged seed

Seed is either sown directly into soil or into compost designed especially as an aid for germination. These composts contain carefully balanced nutrient formulae which provide larger proportions of potassium and phosphorus compounds which promote rooting and shoot growth. The amounts of nitrogen needed at and immediately post-germination are limited. Excess nitrogen immediately post-germination will cause over-rapid growth which is susceptible to pest and pathogen damage.

Minor nutrients will also be included in composts which ensures the establishment of efficient metabolic activities free from deficiency disorders. Composts require pH values at ~ 7.0 for the majority of seedlings unless they are of calicifuge (unsuited for calcareous soils) species where lime requirement is limited and the compost pH will be formulated at 6.0. Additionally, the pC will be carefully tuned ensuring correctly balanced ionic content avoiding root burning disorders. Finally, the compost should be water retentive but offering a rooting environment with at least 50 percent of the pore spaces filled with air. Active root respiration is essential while at the same time water is needed as the carrier for nutrient ions.

Seedlings encountering beneficial environments delivering suitable temperatures will germinate into healthy and productive plants.

Healthy seedlings

Some plants such as lettuce require cool conditions for germination (<10 oC), a condition known as thermo-dormancy. This reflects the evolution of the wild parent species in cooler environments and growth cycles limited by higher summer temperatures.

Careful husbandry under protection such as in greenhouses provides plants which can be successfully transplanted into the garden. The soil receiving these should be carefully cultivated, providing an open crumb structure which permits swift and easy rooting into the new environment. It is essential that in the establishment phase plants are free from water stress. Measures which avoid predation from birds such as pigeons may also be required.

Pigeon feeding

Netting or the placing of cotton threads above plants helps as a protection measure. Weeds must be removed otherwise competition will reduce crop growth and encourage pests and diseases, particularly slug browsing. Finally, the gardener will be rewarded for his/her work with a fruitful and enjoyable crop!

To Fruit or Not to Fruit - The Story of Mast Seeding

To Fruit or Not to Fruit – The Story of Mast Seeding

Perennial plants that are able to reproduce multiple times during their lifetime don’t always yield the same amount of seeds each time they reproduce. For some of these plants, there is a stark difference between high-yield years and low-yield years, with low-yield years outnumbering the occasional high-yield years. In years when yields are high, fruit production can seem excessive. This…

Meet Erigeron linearis

Erigeron is a genus of herbaceous, flowering plants consisting of between 390 and 460 species and is a member of the aster/sunflower family (Asteraceae). Plants in this genus are annuals, biennials, or perennials and are mainly found in temperate regions around the world. At least 163 species occur in the contiguous United States. Erigeron diversity is particularly high in western states;…

I’ve been struggling to grow these from seed because I have a very bad habit of pulling them out, thinking they’re weeds. Now, I stop, look at the colours (dark purple stem and green leaves) and leave them be.

Today I transplanted the remaining snapdragons and give some to mom’s friend.

The 3 upper pics are dahlias, shirleys and millet seedlings, and in the center there is an hydrangea that my brother gave mom for mother’s day. There is another one but it was already damaged when he gave it to her, so I’m taking care of it.

24/05/2016

Today I transplanted the supposedly callas, before they got too tangled with delphinium’s roots. It was hard to take them off without damaging their roots, they all had grown so closely that some roots where growing across the next bulb’s ones. I planted them in a rectangular pot, if they bloom at the same time it’s gonna look very pretty.

Since I need the seedbed, I put the basil in a single pot. It’s said to keep mosquitoes away, since I have birds at home I don’t like to use repellents in case they affect their health, so basil is going to be a great solution.

To make room for the new seeds I transplanted the only two sweet williams that resisted after the incident. I wonder if putting some more seeds in that pot would make some more bloom. I can try…

23/May/2016

Both schlumbergeras are getting ready to show some flowers, I can’t wait to see them! Mine (the bright green one) had really pretty red/orange flowers last time, I wonder which color mom’s one (the dark green) would show, she can’t remember the last time it bloomed.

The dahlias germinated just 3 days after being planted! The box said it would take a minimum of 10 days, it was a surprise.

Grandpa’s delphinium started showing some flowers, it’s a pity that branch has been damaged and bent, but there are more buds about to open.

The plant that started growing in the same pot has begun to show some leaves, I’m very curious about what is it, if the seeds came from our balcony, it must be a calla since it’s the only bulbous plant we have there, but since the pot has soil from grandpa’s garden, it can be tulips or narcissus since grandpa had a lot there. Whichever it is, it would be pretty! I have to transplant them asap, but I’m afraid to damage the delphinium’s roots.

Also, today I received seeds from exotic-plants.de (I bought them from their Amazon’s shop). They have a lot of beautiful flowers’ seeds! That’s where I got the adenium, wisteria and camellia seeds last time. Now I got 5 new varieties, I put a picture from their shop so you can see how they look when they grow. I’m in love with my little Luang Lai adenium, so I got another variety. I have to transplant the remaining snapdragons to use the seedbed. I should have bought another one! I didn’t think all the snapdragons I planted would grow, I’m proud of them! I can’t wait to germinate the new seeds~

26/Apr/2016

There are a lot of sprouts growing up!

  • In the purple seedbed there is basil
  • The green one has snapdragons (there are 3 big ones and you can see a lot of little ones in the soil)
  • In the brown ones there are sweet williams
  • Look at this! Remember that misterious pot called “Lemon & mandarin ???” there is something growing up there! I wonder which of them?
  • There is a rosebud opening beside the yellow rose
  • Can you help me identifying this one? Mom had this pot on the balcony, and I started taking care of it after installing the greenhouse (along with some other plants she had there) and after watering it regularily it has grown a lot! She isn’t sure if it’s a plant or just some weed. Do you know what is it? [Edit: mom says it some kind of tall blue flower that grew in grandpa’s garden, maybe delphinium?]

I should put the tomato plants in bigger pots and tie them properly, they are growing quickly! I should give some of them to my aunts because if all of them grow fine I won’t have that much space for them…
