- Let’s say both Quentin and Julia had been rejected by Brakebills (or just Julia was rejected, and Quentin decided that he didn’t want to attend the school without his best friend andthe medication that is supposed to keep his brain from breaking). They both managed to hang onto their memories of magic, and were thankfully found by Richard before they could get into real trouble.
- Now, neither Richard nor Henry like each other too much. Richard see’s no value in Fogg’s approach of teaching his students with the whole ‘Magic comes from pain’ thing (no matter how true this may sometimes be), and Henry believes that magic that isn’t structually taught like they do in Brakebills, is too dangerous in the hands of it’s users.
- However, that doesn’t mean that the Fogg’s students and Corrigan’s hedges don’t occasionally cross paths.
- And it doesn’t mean that the two groups sometimes have to work together, when there is a threat that concerns both. (Like Marina trying to get control over all the local covens and infiltrating Brakebills. Or like other magical threats, that targets magicians regardless of their origins.)
- Then you have ‘classicly trained, you plebians’ Brakebills student Eliot, and ‘at least we don’t need alcohol and drugs to keep our superiority complex afloat’ Hedge witch Quentin.
- And of course the two start pining for each other.
- Which, of course, leads to them trying to cover it up by bickering endlessly with each other. They never get truly mean or hostile, and match each other bark for bark.
- Their mutual attraction to each other is a secret to exactly no one but themselves.
- Whenever a meeting between Brakebills and the Hedges is required, Fogg and Corrigan respectively pull Eliot and Quentin aside beforehand and implore them to play nice. It never works.
- Margo just rolls her eyes and tells Eliot to fuck the nerd hedge already. At which point Eliot usually starts drinking. Julia tells Quentin pretty much the same thing, just less crass than Margo, which usually prompts Q to bury himself in his books.
- All the while, they are also weirdly protective of each other.
- Brakebills graduate Mike Mccormick starts spreading shitty stories around the community about Eliot after their brake up? Quentin cons him into a game of push and wins every article of clothing from him and makes him go home with only a sign saying “I’m an unworthy dick and Eliot Waugh is better off without me”, covering his genitals. Someone tries messing with Q? Eliot pins them upside down to the ceiling via his telekinesis.
- But they definitely do not have the hots for each other, jesus, Margo/Julia!
