#witch advice
Experienced witches, witches who have made the same mistakes, witches trying to maintain an honest and informative community - please tell me which are the main authors/publishers to avoid while reading up on witchcraft (any topic, we’re not specializing too much here) and which are your personal recommendations
Thanks y’all
I’ve been seeing a lot of posts recently of people complaining that their spells aren’t working or aren’t strong enough because they don’t have the right tec and it really just blows my mind.
I mean, I know everyone needs to find a system that works for them and every system has varying degrees of difficult tools/ingredients. However, you don’t need anything fancy to still be able to do a boatload of magic!
A well annoited candle and a whisper into the flame. A blackthorn staff. A wet rag on a stone. So much can be done from so little if you understand the reasoning and process behind those ingredients and tools.
It isn’t a process learned overnight. I’ll be the first to admit to needing to study more and not get stuck in a rut in my practice. But get out there an experiment! Take notes! Fail and fail again and fail better until you succeed.
Curse help?
What is the verdict of placing two separate curses on a person at a time? For example nightmares and constant bad luck
When dealing with curses, I personally like to be as simple and straightforward as possible. Really think hard about what you’re trying to do. Boil down your goals and intentions to a singular thing. If you phrase it correctly, you could achieve a lot.
Alternatively, you could always curse their luck and walk their dreams yourself to disturb their rest.
People tend to attempt to go big or go home when it comes to working with the other hand but I’ve never seen the sense in overcomplicating things. Especially when working with a type of magic that’s more volatile and likely to explode in your face if you aren’t careful.
Anyone have any book reccommendations for southern folk witchcraft thats not focused as much on bible-centric beliefs? Im having trouble trying to find resources that arent super full of bible references
Is there a particular reason you want to specifically practice folk magic but also avoid the Christian bible?
I don’t want to come off as flippant with that question. It’s sincerely asked because resources will be much more difficult to find if they are both hills you’re willing to die on. It won’t be impossible but everyone has different boundaries so you might be able to get away with more if your limits are looser.
For example, I’m not southern but my craft is based in the folklore of my area. It’s an area which is heavily Christian. I’m not, but I also acknowledge the power that a tool like the bible has in certain workings. It’s also worth noting that just because something might come from a “Christian” source doesn’t mean there aren’t roots that dig even deeper.
If you truly want it to be southern, andfolklore based, and not Christian I would research stories and folklore of the area. Distill them down to their bones. Experiment with what works. Journal your findings. Get to know the local flora and fauna and the energy that resides in them and the land itself. Though to be fair, this is always my advice when it comes to locally based witchcraft.
Best of luck!
My reason for wanting to take the southern folk route without the christianity is because my family has lived in the deep south for a very long time, so i want to get closer to my roots, but Christianity has always rubbed me the wrong way. Depending on how reliable/apaptable the source its not really a deal breaker if it includes Christian themes because i recognize that Christianity is deeply intertwined with southern folklore and i want to respect that part of history. Also, im 100% planning on getting to know my area more and educating myself on the local stories! Thanks for the advice i appreciate it so much!!
I’m glad to hear that you’re already planning on learning more about your local area! I feel like that gets overlooked more often than anything else when it comes to folk magic. As for book recommendations, I don’t have a ton because most of my practice came locally but I have a few. As always, take everything with a heaping dose of salt and always try to check against multiple sources.
Okay! Onto the books:
If you want Southern folk magic and don’t mind Christian influences and bible talk, Jake Richards’s Backwoods Witchcraft is nice. I’ve also always loved The Silver Bullet, and Other American Witch Stories by Hubert Davis and Aaron Oberon’s Southern Cunning: Folkloric Witchcraft In The American South makes a nice addition to the Silver Bullet.
Forfolk magic in general, some people like Gemma Gary’s work. Her book The Devil’s Dozen: Thirteen Craft Rites of the Old One is nice but I have mixed feelings on her writing style. A friend of mine has all her books though and loves her.
A Grimoire for Modern Cunning Folk: A Practical Guide to Witchcraft on the Crooked Path by Peter Paddon is nice for “beginner” trad craft work. And while I’ve never read it, I’ve heard Nigel G. Pearson’s Treading the Mill: Practical Craft Working in Modern Traditional Witchcraft is worth checking out and is in the same traditional vein.
Like I said before, good luck with everything! Building a folk magic tradition isn’t the easiest but I wouldn’t trade my practice for anything.
The religion of Wicca began in the 20th century. It has no roots in paganism, but is notably known for having been inspired by a myriad of different practices, specifically honing in on putting a modern twist on traditional practices.
It was developed in England during the first half of the 20th century and was introduced to the public in 1954 by Gerald Gardner, a retired British civil servant. Wicca draws upon a diverse set of ancient pagan and 20th-century hermetic motifs for its theological structure and ritual practices.
To understand the origins of Wicca and how it became so widespread, we need to understand the Feminist movements that inspired its growth, such as The Goddess Movement.
(Gerald Gardner)
The Goddess Movement was one of the many ways in which witchcraft would begin to separate itself from the devil and its negative associations, and “Although the belief systems and practices of modern witches vary widely from group to group, there are generally consistent qualities: a female principle is deified, equal to or greater than a male principle; body and soul are interdependent; nature is sacred; individual will is sacred and powerful; time is cyclical; sexuality, spontaneity, imagination, and play are sacred and often incorporated into ritual; and the experience of pleasure is sacred–a positive life force. Worship can be monotheistic, polytheistic, or pantheistic.” (Dumpert, 1999), This is formally known as The Goddess Movement, and is a particularly modern view on witchcraft and Wicca in relation to its reclaiming into today’s world.
This movement describes the spiritual beliefs or practices (mainly in neopaganism) that grew as a reaction to perceptions of predominant organized religion as male dominated, and makes use of goddess worship and focus on gender and femininity. It is widespread and non-centralized and the practices vary widely. The Goddess Movement is also referred to by some as being a form of cultural religiosity that is increasingly diverse, graphically widespread, eclectic and more dynamic in process.
The goddess in this context is the same goddess worshipped in Wicca, which was explained in the article, however the goddess movement is not entirely Wiccan-based, nor is it bound to any other religion worshiping a female God. Instead it is a conglomeration of multiple religions and practices of worshipping femininity and female gods with the intent of redefining religion as something that is not male dominated.
Some, such as dianic-wiccans, exclusively worship female deities while others do not. It is shown that “In some parts of Europe, women believed that they participated in nighttime spiritual journeys led by the goddess Diana or by other supernatural female figures. These nighttime spiritual assemblies would dance, feast, and occasionally enter the homes of neighbors, rewarding the hospitable and punishing the slovenly. The wild ride with Diana was a form of folk belief in the “wild hunt,” a troop of spirits led by a female or male deity that rode out at night, striking terror in those who encountered it. During the Middle Ages, the Christian view of these beliefs changed. Early in the period they were seen as merely superstitious and mistaken, but towards the tenth and eleventh centuries they began to be considered heretical. The Canon Episcopi, a legal document of the Frankish kingdom issued about 900 CE, condemns “wicked women… who believe that they ride out at night on beasts with Diana, the pagan goddess.…Such fantasies are thrust into the minds of faithless people not by God but by the Devil.” Gradually, the folk concept of the wild hunt, with its feasting, music, and dancing, was transformed into the diabolical sabbat, a nocturnal assembly of witches under the direction of the devil where horrible acts took place.” (Russell, 2005).
Belief systems range from monotheistic to polytheistic to pantheistic, encompassing a range of theological variety similar to that in the broader neopagan community. Wicca has huge impacts on witchcraft because witchcraft directly derives many of the topics, ideas, and even practices of wicca despite not being religiously tied down to anything. Today, there are witches of many religions who still come together to worship and celebrate wiccan holidays as a part of their craft

You can look in thrift stores for old objects that seem powerful, sometimes they have candles too! Not only is it environmentally friendly compared to buying all new stuff, but you can also utilize the old magic to make something new and possibly connect with something new!
Recycling is very good, it’s a nice way of giving back to nature!
A couple things to keep in mind:
- Absolutely keep in mind the auras/general vibes of each item you want to get and take home
- Cleanse things when you get home, even if you like the aura; just keep in mind you want to keep that part as you’re cleansing and your intentions should be set properly
With Chiron turning today direct in Aries we’re open to new possibilities in our healing process, able to access deep memories, rising from fragmentation into wholeness.
This is a moment where our agreement to go further matters, where we decide if we’re ready to descend into darkness, to accept what we’re going to find there; if we’re ready for metamorphosis and expansion.
The darkness is visibly fearful and hard to be discovered, it needs time, quietness, calmness to open to you the secrets, path, new territory.
Fear is a bandage on your eyes, a mechanism to hold you from reaching wholeness, it’s compartments, rooms, ideas, expectations.
Healing is about saying yes to the darkness, unknown, bringing light to the abandoned places, a calmness of warrior and openness of the child.
Intention.
You can.
Discover.
Wholeness.
Manifest completely new.
I’m losing touch
with my faith, with spirituality, with Wicca. Does anyone know how I can reconnect?
The Five Elements
When people think of “the elements,” they’re probably thinking of the typical earth, air, water, and fire, but they don’t think of the fifth element, nor do they think about the stats of the elements or even the power behind them. This post is meant to go into detail about the five elements, and I hope that I (and my excessive reasearch, lol) are of use to you!

All that accumulates in the unseen places and to sing beauty into the world.
Wing and Feather,
Storm and Leaf,
Air, I call thee hence”

Fire
Fire cleanses and purifies, but it is also creative and destructive. It can consume everything in it’s path and it is the only one of the elements that cannot exist without feeding on something else. It offers warmth and cooks food, but can get out of control. It has the power to transform everything it touches. It is positive and lifting, but can be frightening if not controlled. It is the most physical and spiritual of the elements and represents magick itself. Fire is represented in the forms of burning objects, love spells (always preferably self-love spells), baking, and lighting candles and fires.

✨Spirit✨
Spirit (also known as Ether/Aether) is, by far, the most complex and complicated element to explain. It is what unites all things, anywhere and everywhere, and is our connection to the otherworld in rituals. The spirit element transports us beyond any narrow confines and allows us to open up to something much bigger, it is present in all aspects of life, and goes beyond thought and emotion. Unlike the other four elements it has no defined place or location, even though we cannot specifically place it, we know it is there. It provides the space, connection, and balance for the other elements to exist. All spells benefit from this element.
